Honouroble Mention: Blade

Without the DVD sales of Blade, we may have never known any of these other movies.
Actually, Batman (1989) would have been the movie to open up the comic book/super hero genre. Before this movie, the only super hero films were of Superman and several low budget TV series (Wonder Woman, the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man). The 1989 Batman movie shows that a Batman can be done in a more serious tone not campy (comicky) like the '60s series with Adam West (I liked this series also, for its time...guilty pleasure - want it on BD).

Batman gave us a believable tragic hero and Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker fits the character at that time. The Dark Knight is a very worthy update continuing the reboot of Batman in Batman Begins. The reinterpretation of the Joker was very well done by Heath Ledger for the modern audience.

At any rate, after the 1989 Batman, we start seeing a more serious treatment of comic book properties. These things were no longer "just for kids". New shows and movies in the genre begin to emerge: TAS, the Flash TV series, X-Men, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, even the Ang Lee Hulk movie, and the Smallville TV series (I don't look at this series as true Superman but an alternate reality), etc. Each step help expand the genre making it possible for the adaptation of Watchmen and the viability of building an interconnected set of movies in a comic universe by Marvel (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and the Avengers).

Top 5 (no particular order):
Batman (1989) - first credible looking super hero not wearing tights and the story presents a worthy adversary (the Joker) for Batman.
Iron Man - a very believable presentation of a man in a hi-tech one-man army battle suit. What makes Iron Man believable is that the audience is allowed to follow Tony Stark through the development of the technology.
Spider-Man - a very believable adaptation of the comic character. The filmmakers were able to keep to the signature Spider-Man look and make it functional and not cheesy.
The Fantactic Four - while it may be easier to apply effects to Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic, the Thing and Human Torch are the challenge.
Thor - from the teaser trailer and what I've heard from the interviews from Collider.com with the cast and Kevin Feige, I think that this will be a good interpretation of Thor and the approach that Marvel takes with making the "bridge" between the fantasy elements of Asgard and the reality of Earth.

Hopefully the new Spiderman is worthy of being added to the list. Thank god it has been rebooted.

If it's what I think it is then it's the Richard Lester "theatrical version". This is the better version in my opinion. Even though 70% of the movie was filmed by Richard Donner, Richard Lester was able to make good use of the footages. He was able to insert a more credible first act for Superman II as well as expanding the Metropolis fight with the Phantom Zone villains along with other edits within the movie.

Check the director's credit on the DVD. I'm still waiting for the theatrical version to come out on BD.

There are a few ways to look at this; which is the best stand alone movie, which movie was the most true to the source material, which is the most entertaining, etc?

Regardless, I think these are some of the best are:

The Dark Knight
Cemetery Man
Watchmen
V For Vendetta
Sin City
300
A History of Violence
Ghost World

I think it'd be (in order):

Sin City
300
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
A History of Violence

To sum: R-rated movies, not hugely fond of the "superhero" genre.

It's an Italian movie based on an Italian comic called Dylan Dog.

I've not watched it recently, but it's one of my favorite movies.
