I kinda feel this way too. Why didn't I sell my PS3 at launch for a $2400 profit again?

It always costs more to be an early adopter, this is nothing new. Besides, it's only $100 difference, not even a full day's salary for anyone with a decent job. I'll gladly take the enjoyment my PS3 has brought me over the last 6 months over saving a little money. If you want a cheap hobby, home theater and video gaming is not for you, maybe try collecting stamps?

3.5 million, not 6 million and its been 9 months, get over it. The loud and clear message is dont buy any electronics when it first comes out as the price drops exponentially.....its not sony its reality.

Adding another $600 unit is silly in my opinion. The average consumer is still going to see a $600 and $500 version, nothing will be different really. Makes this price cut seem silly and I definately don't see it doubling sales. I hope, but I doubt it.

Sony would have been better off just making a $499 80gb unit, the extra 20gig HDD isn't that expensive. The game package could have been a Christmas special, not another sku.

That's just me.

I really don't understand the 60Gb model, we all know you can upgrade the hard drive to a larger one, so what's the big deal over 20Gb extra?

The lower price model will sell though, and that's a good thing as we move toward Christmas, loads of games and movies on the way and I'm sure Sony won't be slow to market this big time.

MS don't have much to come back with.

I think having two SKU's moves the conversation more to which PS3 do I want and reduces the PS3 vs 360 conversations.

I can see some othe subtleties that are a bit difficult to articulate easily as well..and then there is a question of whether we have all the info about what will be in that august box..Like the firmware updates they often seem to leave little surprises not in the official documents..wonder if that will be the case here...partly to keep MS off balance.

MS can always drop the price..and I assume they will. It's one of their pillars of strategy to always be cheaper..that's why they rushed it to market and used such shoddy components...to stay ahead in the price curve as long as possible.

Because eventually it'll cost Sony more to offer 60GB than to offer 80GB. The 60GB drives will go obsolete because HDD manufacturers won't make them anymore. Basically in the coming years, Sony will update the package with the lowest HDD capacity that can be had as cheap as the price of the original 60GB. You might see a 120GB PS3 in 2008/9.

The 80GB package is not a bad deal really.

i have to agree with you on that. elite released a 120gb, why not sony? for a merely 20gb extra its not that much of a difference. heck, i still have enough memory on my 60gb sony (and that will last me another 1 to 2 year.) and i got it on the release date.

I still think sony can do more than that. even if it drove the price up, with the original 599 dollars for the price the ps3 still managed to sell out.

on top of what you mentioned look at how much MS profited from their elite units. AND IT WAS JACK SHIT, not that many people bothered to get it. even with the fact that with the 360 it makes sense to have a 120gb harddrive to it because you will need that memory downloading movies, tv series and and documentaries, you will need the space. with the ps3 a mere 20gb added to the 60gb doesn't really make sense. i am extremely happy with my 60gb, and it deserved every penny to match the price tag. I think the 80gb is unnessary. also, what to stop sony from releasing 100gb in the next few months, and making the 80gb at the price tag of 499. i mean they stopped making the 20gb, and i could see the possibility of them stopping the 60gb. I see the 80gb units profiting if sony provided an HDMI cable along with the box.

Same here, no regrets on my launch day purchase. I'm excited the price cut is happenning so they'll move more units. Greater PS3 sales helps us by encouraging more game development and more BR sales.

I wish they would cut the price further so I could justify getting a 2nd PS3 for downstairs

Considering you get 20gb more storage and a 60.00 game(motor storm) included the 600.00 one seems to be the better deal provided you want that game. If I were picking one up right now thats the one I would get. Just my opinion though.

The big deal with the 80gb unit is more the bundled game from what it appears.

The PS3 is still the equivalent of $800 in the UK. If it dropped in price to £250, the equivalent of the new US price, I reckon they would be absolutely flying off the shelves.

Default 80 gig PS3

I will be waiting for this model so I can be sure it will have the latest firmware edition installed already.
Most likely the ones selling now do not have the 1.82 version update installed and since I only have dial up just makes more sense to wait another month in my case.

can't wait though
