Default [RUMOR] PS3 price drops

http://gaming.monstersandcritics.com...ce_cut_inbound

Quote:
Specifically, in light of PS3 per-unit manufacturing costs presently sitting at around $400 USD (having dropped from $800 USD), a number of posters at SlickDeals.net are this week suggesting that Sony is preparing to shift the 40GB SKU to $299 USD this coming January 28.
If this is true, it will be the one of the counterstrike from BDA against recent HD DVD price slashing.

Bingo! If they drop the price to $299 and the 20% off RZ coupon are still valid until the 28th. That'll bring down the price to $240!

I don't think that 20% RZ coupon applies to PS3, just stand alone players.

Also the rumor isn't saying that the price drop will happen January 28th. That's the date for the announcement. The date the price will go into effect (apparently) is Friday, February 29th.

We shall see soon enough though if the rumors are true.

They don't announce a price drop a month in advance. If they did that then no one would purchase the machine for that entire month. When they announce it, it will go into effect immediately.

I believe this rumor is highly suspect as they just did a big round of price drops and we are now in the slow buying period. There isn't much incentive to drop the price right now when they could wait until around E3 when their new announcements coupled with a price drop will really fuel the fire.

But if the price drop comes early more power to them, but I just don't see it happening.

Oh you're right, the price cuts come right away. They always introduce a new model to come out in the future with those price cuts. Sorry.
In any case, as with this rumor, that's also what's coming with the rumor. Here's just one link that says so (it's just a blog though so not really a source) http://gamerumor.blogspot.com/

They would be loosing to much if they took an other hit, but I guess it be cool for consumers, and they might be able to make up for it through game and movie sales.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. It would be great for those wanting a ps3, but they just had a price drop the last quarter of 07. I would expect one from nintendo 1st. As they are yet to have a price drop. There has been rumor of a wii drop for a while. The rumor is that it will happen by the end of the 1st Q of 08. Wouldn't expect that one until sales slow.

I doubt the PS3 will be $299 even this Christmas. The next drop will probably be to $349.

From that blog:

Reason 2: Time Warner. In exchange for Time Warner's exclusitivity (and an end to the format war), Sony has promised to reduce the price of the Playstation 3. As many of you know the Playstation 3 is equipped with a blu-ray disk drive, and the more the Ps3 sells, the greater the chance of Blu-Ray's success.

I wonder if there is any truth to this? Doesn't seem to far fetched. Hmmmmmm.

Actually, next stage of PS3's price drop is under working. Already Toshiba(oh!) has began production of 65nm-RSX last december. This made it possible total production cost cut about 50$.

the people who are waiting for more price cuts are nothing more than cheapstakes - for whats under the hood the current PS3 price is a bloody bargain!

Default Don't see $299...$349 MAYBE

When Sony is losing money hand over fist on the PS3 as it is, even if they want to take even more of a hit than they already are, I don't see them giving up another $100. As with all price drops, I was a manager at an EB Games, now Gamestop, but price drops on systems usually caught us by suprise and a previous poster was correct in saying that they will not announce a price drop then wait a month. Rumors of price drops in video games swirl every year in Janurary. If I had to guess, and its only my guess, we might see $349 in august or september, but not much more than that.

Sony isn't losing money hand over fist anymore.

An 80 gig PS3 costs about 400$ to make now, meaning that they are coming in awfully close to even (depending on how much the retailer's cut of the product is).

They need to drop the PS3 price to sell more units - that's the bottom line. They sold 800,000 in December - while the Xbox 360 sold 1.3 million. Article on IGN has more details.
