Where did you read this? Many major American motion pictures have done away with opening credits. Van Helsing, Batman Begins, Hostel, Cloverfield, The Mummy Returns, Teacher's Pet, and The Reader not even displaying the film title until the closing credits begin.

Guess this will arrive next week then. I'm a bit worried, I must say. Being one of my all time favorite movies I have high hopes for a Blu-ray release.

And if it's not DTS-HD (only DD5.1) it goes right back to where it came from!

If this is a good presentation, I'll definitely try to pick one up.

Good luck!

I think it used to be a rule but not anymore. I remember reading that George Lucas was fined on Star Wars (the first one) for leaving all of the credits except for the title until the very end.

Got it in the mail today.
  • DTS-HD sound - YES
  • Region B locked - YES

Norwegian and Swedish subtitles only. It has scene selection (chapters) but no extras what so ever.

It has a healthy amount of grain, but (and this I would like to hear other views of as well): I notice vertical "lines" in the picture throughout the movie. VERY annoying and obviously not meant to be (didn't notice these in any of the DVD's I have owned).

The lines are especially visible during the darker scenes of the movie (during the opening titles for example).

Can someone with a little more image (and sound) expertise than I have share some thoughts?

So far I'm EXTREMELY disappointed...

I'm sorry to hear that

Region B locked decides the issue for me. I hope that they release a better version at some point.

Lionsgate announced some Studio Canal releases for next year so maybe this will eventually be added?

Why don't you purchase a Region B Blu-ray player? This is what I did a long time ago, and it's one of the best decision I have ever made. Now I get the best of both worlds, and even when almost everything is released on Blu-ray I will get to choose the best of all releases, either Region A or Region B. I highly recommend picking up a Region B player to go along with your Region A Blu-ray player.

If I see a need at some point, I'll consider it. There's not much I want that is only available in Region B.

As this optical fogging is a decision made by David Lynch himself, this new Blu-ray release is the same as all other versions. You won't find this without the fogging.

Can you describe these "lines" in a bit more detail? Are they shadowy soft-edged bands or sharply delineated lines? Do they have a particular colour? Do they move across the screen or remain in one position?

I haven't heard of a fault like this on Blu-ray discs, so it sounds rather strange. If it is indeed a technical fault in the mastering, this is very disappointing.

I did that right from the start (Panasonic for region A and PS3 for region B). Now I have replaced the Panny with a regionfree Oppo which I can only highly recommend. Plays everything, all discs in all audio and video formats, BD and DVD of all regions (including C) and has no problems with the dreaded 1080i/50 frame rate or other so-called "PAL" frame rates. It also plays SACD and DVD-Audio and in addition to that via USB all video formats you might find on the net in all resolutions and frame rates, ranging from AVI, DivX, XviD to MKV and WMV. PQ and AQ are simply amazing. One of my bestest acquisitions ever!

Yes, but he only applied it after the theatrical release, so I bet that somewhere the uncensored version exists, it's just a question of whether the all international distributors chose to bow to Lynch's request (which frankly, is ridiculous) and since the Norway disc does have chapters, I figured maybe they had also used an uncensored master.

Well, let's hope they all do what Lynch intended. I want to see his movies the way Lynch wanted us to see it. Why would I want to see something the director has seen fit to alter?

I haven't watched the Blu-ray yet (just the beginning to check sound and picture quality), but I'll let you know when I have.
