10 Things I hate About You is a waste of a bluray.
If you sister is interested in these kind of movies, then maybe bluray is not for her. That is just my opinion, since I only buy movies that I deem worth it on bluray. Dark knight, Hulk 2, Iron Man, check my collection and you will get the jest of what I consider bluray worthy. Comedies and chick flicks, I can watch on DVD and could not care less. Some people don't care about quality that is why there is tons of movie downloading. People even stream movies just so they don't "waste" money on movies. I see their point. Check the blind buy thread, and see how much money is wasted on movies. There is a lot of garbage out there that we should not waste our money on. I buy movies I like and if I want to see a movie that I know nothing about then I rent it. So while your question is valid and lots of people will relate to it (people who don't care about PQ/AQ/money issues/people that say buying movies and music is a bad investment/etc...) Asking it on blu-ray.com would not get you the answer you wanted to hear. |

i did the same thing as the OP: bought my sister a blu-ray player and she hasnt bought any.
i don't think she's bought them because of the timing of the format, but instead b/c she just doesn't care about blu-ray as much as we all do (shocker, yes, there are people like that out there). in hindsight, i would have bought her a kindle or something i know she'd use. |

I bought my first BD player for Christmas (PS3). I've had it up and running almost nonstop for 2 months. I am also the guy that waited several years to buy his first DVD player to make sure the tech would stay around. I absolutely believe that Blu-ray is here for the long haul, as evidenced by my collection of 80 movies (I'm a compulsive collector but even so, a rate of 40 movies a month is unsustainable. LOL).
I will always love my DVD collection (almost 95% are imports), but HD is just too beautiful to miss out on. |

This would probably be a better, or more interesting question if it weren't simply a matter of a yes or no opinion...
It would be interesting to see numbers and to know just how many people have adopted BD and how many potentially WILL adopt BD. Or what % of homes it will eventually occupy. The latest info I could find said 17 million players in homes in the USA. How many DVD players are in homes now? Will BD ever reach that number? Also, maybe it should be phrased, what can YOU do to make that number go up. As you guys found buying one for your sister might be a waste. But showing off your system to friends and co-workers is probably a good way to get some people to buy a blu-ray player. I think think this Xmas will see a lot of people buying their first blu-ray player. They will be $100 and maybe under hopefully. Maybe there will be some added features like netflix or hulu streaming on players under $150 as I think people are starting to take note of these types of added features. They need to bring down the prices of BD (obviously). Especially for rentals. My locals stores rent them for $4 or $5 which is twice what a SD disc costs to rent. Titles - they need a lot more titles, the selection currently sucks ass. But I've said that on here from time to time for the past few years. I looked at my collection the other day to see if there was any DVDs I could get rid of and there were only 3 or 4 out of 100 that a BD has been released for. It seems like the studios should speed up releasing titles now that BD adoption seems to have a lot of momentum. Don't see why they don't release a bare-bones version first and a full-features version later (if that is what is holding them up - really why don't they release more titles?) It also doesn't seem like backwards compatibility is a compelling reason to buy a new piece of hardware. Super Audio CD was backwards compatible with CD but people did not perceive the need to have something better than CD so they didn't buy in to it. BD is just enough of an improvement though that I think people with HD sets can justify it once they see the difference. My short answer would be NO, but this Christmas will be the time for the masses to buy in to BD. |

In the grand scheme of things, yeah, its still early. Movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Alien Quad, a billion Disney movies, tons TV series and foreign titles (US releases), and countless of fan favorites are not yet available on the format.
That said, theres plenty of fantastic material on bluray already, enough that I certainly feel justified in the purchase of my player. The format grows bigger and better every year. Movies that initially got flubbed in early release like Gangs/NewYork and Fifth Element are being reissued and more and more reference material discs are being released as well. Even now bluray is worth it for owning modern movies like Star Trek and UP which take full advantage of the format and are head and shoulders above dvd. So I say now is as good as any time ![]() |

If you have a high def TV I don't think there is any reason not to get a BD player.
If you're going to purchase a movie, it should be on BD at this point. If you only rent or even if you don't buy any or many BD's, I've found that my BD player up-converts far better than my DVD player. Either way, you're better off. |

I think I joined the BluWorldOrder 3 years ago now???
When was the fourth season of the O.C.?? There was an episode on the day after I bought my first player where a girl says "There is a bevy of Blu-ray anime." Yeah...then. |

I think by the end of this year it will be time for almost everyone to enter the Blu-ray market as a lot of the major movies will be released this year or early next. I am also sure Wal-mart will have a basic player for around or under $50 for the holidays as they currently have one for $68.

Rogers bell curve suggests that Innovators are the first 2.5% of people who buy into a tech, and early adopters are the next 13.5%. Early Majority is the next 34%. We are not quite at the Early majority phase of blu-ray adoption (which should be when blu-ray is in 16% of households) but it's close... probably this year. So I would say it's no longer "too early" to buy blu-ray. The hardware is pretty good, backwards compatible and offers other attractive (netflix, etc.) so there's not much issues in terms of "investment" to worry about.
