This could be a visual and auditory reference disc for Blu-ray. One to keep an eye on for sure.

Id rather they get it right the first time. From what I hear the release window of the first 3D Full HD discs are Summer 2010 which is about the normal timeframe for a movie release. Cameron and Panasonic have such tight connections that I feel Avatar being the first disc to use Panasonics 3D technology is a very strong possibitity. Even though few will be able to utilize this feature its still an exciting prospect

With Avatar being 161 minutes long and 3D BD requiring 50% higher bitrates then 2D BD the only extras that could fit on the same disc as the movie would be a commentary. A second disc would be required for extras.

I'm curious then....... what the "big" appeal is? I mean.... I will certainly give it a viewing, but the previews really silly to me..... but I realize they don't show any of what the movie is about (which I have no clue about either)

Is the Special-Effects the big draw with this??? Is the script adapted from something that was popular?

I guess I'll wait to see it, which I certainly plan on...... but my wife even said to me earlier this evening "This Avatar movie must really be bad" and I said "why do you say that?" and she said something about the fact that they were doing a lot of promotions for it etc..... and I told her that to the best of my knowledge they were expecting it to set all kinds of records..... she thought I was being facetious......

The movie may be great..... but from the clips they show on T.V..... it's certainly alienating the casual movie-goer........

Is there another film that this compares to?

This probably isn't the best forum for my ramblings..... but I'm curious.... I don't want any spoilers, so I don't want to google-for-answers.

EDIT:

Oh.... it's 3-D

The movie's budget is over $300 million, so they had better be promoting it.

I'm normally into sci-fi films, but this really hasn't got me excited to see it. The effects are supposed to be ground breaking, and with the 3D, I'm tempted to see it theatrically.

As for setting records, most people believe it will do very well, but not Dark Knight well.

I find it odd that you're not so "up to date" with modern movies.

So far we know that
A. There will be two releases. One in 2-d and one in 3D.

B. 10 minutes of deleted scenes.

Any other speculation? I see a may release for the 2D version and December for the 3D.

Default It would be advantageous

If both the 3D and the 2D versions were on just one disc.
Just like Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I will try to NEVER see this movie without 3D enabled. -- It would be like watching it on mute.

I wonder if this is going to take some upgrading...

this movie will easily change the game forever. Just got back from an IMAX 3D showing, don't see it in anything less. My mouth was open for the entire length. The Blu Ray I don't even think will be able to do this justice.

I saw it last night at a midnight showing in an IMAX 3-D theater and I'm still is awe. For the first time since upgrading to blu, I question if I have the right system to full enjoy this. I've heard the PS3 is capable of utilizing 3-D but my question really is what about the TV? I have a 1080p JVC LCD and am wondering if the set needs to be upgraded.

Anyone have any details on how 3-D will look/work on a home theater??

Cameron was kind of ambiguous as to whether they will be presented as deleted scenes or in an extended cut.

Interviewer asked him about an extended cut and Cameron didnt rebuke that, plus he mentioned the scenes will have to be properly mixed and "punched up"

I saw the movie today and it was nothing less than stunning. But it definitely could stand to be 10-20 minutes longer, so I am hoping for an extended cut.

I'm hoping for a one of those 2-3 hour making of documentaries on a second disc like the Transformers films and Iron Man have (first examples that came to mind)

Am I the only one that has no desire to see this movie? I couldn't care less about the 3D so the story is #1 for me, but it just doesn't appeal to me in the previews.

I saw the midnight showing of this with the gf and we were both in awe of the entire film, from the beautiful and stunning landscapes, to the awesome use of 3D, and the story itself. Movies have now been changed, and what a great way to end 2009!

Looks like FOX will probably have distribution rights, so we are definitely going to have DTS-HD MA track (probably 5.1, though a 7.1 properly made would be amazing), and definite demo material all around. All of the exterior shots of Pandora...

On a completely different note, does anyone know if Sam Worthington actually lost all that weight for his role as Jake Scully? Because, damn those legs are thin ( I know Terminator was filmed afterwards )
