agreed, had these and other war movies on all day....including right now. another great part of the memorial day holiday is remembering all the war movies along with all those who served.

Great news that the WED transfer is good...that's one of my favorite WWII movies.

I was concerned about the WED transfer, fearing that WB would spend more time on KH which I personally enjoy but consider the inferior of the two movies. This dvdtalk review mentions thst WED has the better of the two transfers made me really happy.

Loohing forward to watvhing WED in HD.

Default WED v good

Watched Where Eagles Dare last night. An unusually good job for WB. Grain left in, detailed, couldn't see any sharpening or weird edges around the actors. Looks like a classic film!

I thought it has better contrast than some of WB's other efforts but I could be wrong about that.

I hope this sets a standard for WB catalogue in future. NIcely done.

Warner's classic output has been great almost from the beginning of the Blu-ray format It's not like they just started doing it correctly.

I watched it last night and I'd have to agree with you for the most part, except for the beginning of the film. The first 10-15 min. or so of the film seems really DNR heavy. In the opening sequence with the plane flying through the mountains I noticed quite a bit of "haloing" around the mountains in the back ground and the plane. The light and contrast of the sky and the plane are supposed to blend together more, but they're separated with a halo. This seems to just effect the first sequence and that's about it, because when they land on the ground it seems to be lite but noticeable grain from there on.

????? You're j/k right?

Twilight Zone The Movie
Superman (1978)
Creepshow
Unforgiven
Batman (Burton)

The above are imho complete write-offs PQ and/or SQ-wise.

Mediocre:

Logan's Run
The Gauntlet
Blazing Saddles
Enter the Dragon
The Shining
Body Heat

GOOD:
HTWWW
The Searchers
Adv of Robin Hood
Blade Runner
Casablanca

Not a complete list. At a guess, for every good to great classic release from WB there have been at least two duffers/mediocrities.

Yeah, the opening credit sequence with the aerial photography looks bad compared with the rest of the film. I can't tell whether it's DNR that's at fault there, maybe something in the primary photography (poor focus?) or was an extra generation needed to superimpose the credits? Dunno

I can't comment on all of those, but most look as good as their source will allow them to look. Superman looks the way it looks because Geoffrey Unsworth likes to shoot movies a little softer (helps blending in the special effects better as well). Unforgiven and The Shining look great, and I honestly can't think of anything that makes those look bad.

"haloing" like seen around the edges of the plane and the mountains is usually evidence of Edge Enhancement actually. My guess is that they wanted viewers to be able to see the plane apart from the early morning sky and got a little carried away with it. You can also tell that quite a bit of DNR was applied as well, the original shot was probably heavy with debris and grain since it was a night/early morning shot.

I've seen the disc and the opening sequence does not look like edge enhancement to me. More like something in the film element.

I'm sorry but we have quite a difference of opinion on this one bud:

Twilight Zone The Movie - Don't care
Superman (1978) - Couldn't care less, but above poster says that its as good as the source will allow
Creepshow - Don't care at all
Unforgiven - Not sure what you're looking at, but aside from not having lossless audio this is a fantastic transfer.
Batman (Burton) - Meh.

The above are imho complete write-offs PQ and/or SQ-wise.

Mediocre:

Logan's Run
The Gauntlet - Laughable that you would put this on a list of classics, don't care.
Blazing Saddles - Fantastic! and also what the source would allow
Enter the Dragon - Yea, they dropped the ball on this to some extent.
The Shining - again, don't know what you're looking at, but this transfer is honestly one of the best. Yes! If it were remastered it would look even better.
Body Heat

GOOD: (This list seems like a joke to you, so I'm about to blow your mind!)
EDIT: FANTASTIC! (Real classics)
The Searchers
Rio Bravo
The Cowboys
Blade Runner
Casablanca
Gone with the Wind
Doctor Zhivago
Wizard of Oz
Dirty Harry
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange

Is it possibly dupe shots since I remember seeing some grain in the opening title sequence plus there are several dupe shots used at the beginning of the movie. Or at least I think that is what it is.

[QUOTE=Teazle;3336140]????? You're j/k right?

Twilight Zone The Movie yeah, this looks bad
Superman (1978) looks as good as it can
Creepshow not bad at all
Unforgiven picture looks razor sharp to me
Batman (Burton) not great, but looks good

The above are imho complete write-offs PQ and/or SQ-wise.

Mediocre:

Logan's Run
The Gauntlet wrong! picture was best I've ever seen
Blazing Saddles wrong again-- great PQ
Enter the Dragon again, best version out there
The Shining ridiculous! outstanding PQ
Body Heat looks good considering source

The complaint with "The Shining" comes from the fact that several things within the movie have been completely colored wrong. Pink items turned yellow or vice versa.

What? Do you have some proof of that, because that's the first time I'm hearing anything about that.

Enter the Dragon has a serious problem with jaggies, but yeah most of the ones Teazle posted range from decent to good so idk what he's talking about.

I had not heard of that nor did I notice anything but I probably wouldn't know the difference... what I do know is that I was so happy with this blu when I bought it because it was so clear and colorful-- I remember getting 2001 and The Shining at the same time and they were 2 of my "showoff" blus when I started collecting

I don't know what to say. I regarded those as 100% uncontroversial duffers. I.e. in no respect true to the originals, just faulty masters &/or faulty encodes.

Thinking again, I remember a guy on one of these forums posting that he thought Batman Begins was true reference material. One of the reviewers on this site thinks Patton is a perfect 5/5. Probably there are some discs in my collection which I think are excellent but are actually rubbish.

Clearly I was wrong to suppose any disc out there is a 100% uncontroversial duffer.

Not at all. Almost nothing surprises me on this forum anymore. The world's a big enough place that no matter how bad something is, somebody out there will love it.
