And the impressive releases they have lined up for the rest of 2010 certainly suggest that they will remain the most influential major studio releasing on Blu-ray.

I remember loving Warner with all my heart for striking the Deathblow during the War... So it's come to this, eh?

Cheers,

Why is it a stretch to believe someone owns even half of these titles? I own most of them except like 5.

2001 is demo worthy considering the age of the film.

Its not a disc that you would demo so, stop it. Maybe if someone asked to see an oldie on blu maybe, but IMO T2 was well better transferred than 2001 so this would be my demo for an oldie

Not every release has to be demo worthy in order to be a good one. They have plenty of other movies out there that are more than solid releases. There's no way Watchmen can be ignored, no matter how anyone feels about the movie.

Warner has made a calculated business decision to spend no money or effort on the vast number of catalog releases, while spending lavishly on a handful of films like North By Northwest and Wizard of Oz. Their view of the Blu-ray market is much different than the other studios. I will credit Warner being aggressive on its standard pricing structure, but they do that because their average costs are lower.

Warner is like the McDonald's of home video. They have produced some stellar Blu-rays, but too many of their discs are technically substandard and probably should not have been released in the first place. Disney goes in the complete opposite direction, releasing only a handful of titles at premium quality. Both extremes are probably not what the Blu-ray market needs to thrive.

Terminator Salvation is another WB title that comes to mind as being quite good, but maybe not reference (for the PQ), but it does look very good.

The audio however...

Half of my collection consists of WB movies, and a vast majority of them are very well done transfers with lossless audio. Very pleased with WB.
Explain why films like Speed Racer have lossy sound then. It was after the format war ended and was a big budget film, that underperformed but still di almost $100 million at the box office.

I was just going to say that along with the show Fringe there is no denying that looks great.

I don't know how I missed that one when I was going through my collection. Yeah, Terminator Salvation is another one that shouldn't be ignored. If anything, it is a demo disc for audio.

I'm not a big fan of Warner blu-rays but I think with this particular release, people are piling on without thinking. The director isn't the only reference for how a film should look, directors aren't consulted most of the time, and "natural colors" are not the visual target of every film. Petersen said he hasn't seen the disc yet, so his statement isn't particularly damning until he does and confirms that this is a botched release.

Wah wah wah. The BDA should set ground rules that force studios to ask for director involvement for each and every single Blu-ray release? Please. And it's not even like the Neverending Story disc is poor - the print is in good shape, the encoding bitrate is high, and it looks like film. And further, it's not like he asked and they told him to go screw, there was just a lack of communication from both parties prior to the release - this surely happens with many releases from ALL studios, this is just one instance where the director made a public statement. Maybe Peterson would have done a slightly better job if given the chance, but it's equally possible he'd make a color scheme that people would rebel against - French Connection anyone? For that release, people were complaining that Fox/MGM let Friedkin get his hands on the film!

Let's be realistic for a minute. There is certainly not the time or money for that level of commitment to each and every single release. A lot of these catalogue titles may never move more than a few thousand units. For titles that aren't big hits, and that aren't seminal classics, there just isn't always the budget to give them the treatment they may or may not deserve. Sure, stupid mistakes like DNR, EE, and lossy audio should be avoided for every single release since simply not doing them doesn't cost any more than doing them (save maybe a few extreme cases where the master video or audio are in a certain condition). But restoration, new special features, etc.? Never going to happen for every single film - never in a million years, no matter the studio. And WB has hands-down put out the most BD titles, both in terms of sheer quantity and in terms of diversity. This big dramatic statement every time WB makes the most minor misstep is getting extremely old.

My main gripe with Warner was their lack of inclusion of lossless sound in their past releases. Presently just about everything I have purchased from them has a lossless track. Some recent catalogs I have purchased have fantastic PQ: Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, North by NorthWest, Robin Hood (1935), The Wild Bunch, Quo Vadis, ect. WB did mess some titles up: the release of Speed Racer with no lossless, The MI collection (no lossless), ect. However, they have released some great new/catalog titles. In the overall scheme WB has turned the corner. There's little doubt about that.

Yeah, 300 was pretty good too. Not everyone likes the grain storms in there, but I think this movie is perfect.

Although I do have to agree with the complaints about WB not talking with the director. It was the most ethical/logical thing to do.

They'll turn the corner for me when they stop authoring half their video encodes to fit on an HDDVD (or a BD25)

MI collection? I assume you are referring to Mission: Impossible. Warner Brothers isn't to blame for that one. Paramount is.
