I think this is too big a seller for Fox to give it to Criterion or whoever right now. They'd probably rather do a new UHD release like Predator and Die Hard got. With the Disney deal though who knows what will change.

I find it strange that this film didn't even get one of Fox's Deadpool slipcovers. I didn't collect those covers, but this is one of Fox's best films ever, so I find it sad that they covered a lot their biggest movies, but missed this one. They could have had The Fly on the cover with Deadpool's head on it, or maybe a Deadpool's hand splatting the fly with a flyswatter.

The existing transfer looks pretty good considering how old the disc is, and it's loaded with ALL of the extras from the superb 2-disc DVD set, so I don't really know what Criterion or Scream Factory could add.

The transfer looks fine, but this film really deserves to look great.

Which means we'd better better off Fox holding it and putting out a UHD rather than Criterion a barely different, new blu-ray.

I'd take a 4k remaster on blu, but yes a UHD would be much better.

Hopefully we can get a 4K remaster before Disney buries this movie.

Yeah the supplements are pretty damn solid. If criterion got this I could see them maybe adding a new interview or two plus a 4k remaster in a perfect world.

Despite loving the earlier release, I'd love a new release with a 4K remaster, the original stereo soundtrack (even with the OTT synth stingers the 5.1 remix removed), new interviews with Cronenberg and the cast and maybe a feature on when "The Fly" became an opera.

* also, with the Cronenberg retrospective being done in LA at the end of the month, perhaps the Q&A that's supposed to be done with Cronenberg, Geena Davis and Howard Shore could be included.

I went to a 35mm screening of this and noticed several instances where the soundtrack was different. Does anyone know why it was changed for the DVD/Blu-Ray?

It can happen when a stereo film is remixed for 5.1 audio. Any examples of the differences?

Sorry for the delayed response. From what I remember the changes were:
-A dramatic echo when the computer first reveals the image on The Fly.
-When Ronnie visits Brundle there's a synth sting when he appears saying "stop!"
-When we see Brundle's shadow above Stathis near the end there's a synth sting.
-The whole sequence where Brundle is attempting to fuse with Veronica there's a synth rumble underneath the score.

Because the home video divisions think they know what's best for us in our homes.
They really need to stop screwing with the soundtracks for home video release, but at this point, where fluctuations between releases, such as mixed volume level, are so far apart that there is apparently no followed standards, tells you all you need to know.

Who does know what's best for home video?

The biggest difference that I know of is the removal of the synth stingers during the last half hour of the film. Maybe when the film was being remastered and restored for the first DVD set, Cronenberg requested their removal because he thought they dated the film.

Does anyone know if those stingers are still present in the 2.0 Dolby Surround track on the original DVD (collector's edition only had 5.1, I think)?

I can confirm they are not in the 2.0 track of the DVD and not in any other language track. Possible they were removed at Cronenberg's request. Really a shame.

Were they musical stings or sound effects? Where were some of the spots they were originally heard?

Just curious; I don't remember this at all.
