I am cautiously optimistic about this movie, and looking forward to it too. This is a large format film, with great potential resolution. It would be wonderful if the video was encoded in high-bitrate AVC (or even VC-1) for Blu-ray. Even though the audio is from an earlier era in movie-making, it could sound very good (especially the Strauss orchestral pieces) in LPCM or DTHD. Let's hope Warner does it justice. |

While 2001 had a very good story, what really made the movie was the atmosphere. The silence outside of the ship is not only technically accurate, but it leaves the viewer feeling very, very alone. This plays a HUGE impact on the feeling of terror when HAL goes nuts. This isn't someone who is lost in the woods and says "there is no one to help me". In 2001 there is not another human being for millions of miles, in one of the most hostile environments imaginable, facing a psychopathic computer that is desperately trying to kill you.
Couple that with stunning cinematography, a perfectly matched soundtrack, and a background story that questions where humanity is from, and you have a movie that is truly like no other. Given all that, I still like Dr Strangelove better. Strangelove is timeless. The same inane thinking in that move is still going on today. It is the best "adult" comedy I have ever seen. |

I was looking on amazon.com and was wondering...does anyone know why the blu-ray disc will have an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 while the regular DVD version will have the anamorphic widescreen 2.20:1 aspect ratio?
I'm curious about this because I thought it was a widescreen / 2.20:1 film. Any help is appreciated, Mike |

Flat out one of the best movies of all time. It was ranked in the 20's on AFI's list. I'd put it in the top ten, but that's close enough.

![]() ![]() I saw the movie back in 1968 when the plywood box console TV, the mainframe computer and the IBM Selectric typewriter was the ultimate in high tech. It was everything I hoped the future would be. Now in 2007, it's amazing to see HDTV, the Internet and YouTube overtaking in what seemed impossible pie in the sky technology back then. On the otherhand, Pan Am is gone along with the Boeing 2707 SST, the ISS space station looks a little smaller then the one in the movie, and we haven't settled the moon, to say nothing of going to other planets. This was one of the first DVD's I got. Unfortunately the film as well as the rest of the boxed Stanely Kubrick collection was sourced from composite, so PQ was sub-par. I am lookng forward to seeing it again on Blu, even if the 60's generation continues to say the psychedelic journey through space/time was all just a drug trip. ![]() Back to The Odyssey Last edited by U4K61; 04-23-2010 at 07:03 PM. |

Maybe top 20 but from that list, I would move it above most though there are a few titles in their that remind me I need to go watch.

The Blu-ray should have the image in its correct ratio "letterboxed" within the High Definition 1.78 wide 1080 x 1920 frame. |

This will be like watching the film squeezed between two large rectangular black monoliths. Entirely appropriate.

Anyone watched this one yet. I wasn't going to buy it, but Bill Hunt said it looked amazing, so now I am thinking about buying it. Anyone else that has seen it on blu, have any input?

Yeah really, WTF is up with Amazon. I've had all the Kubrick titles on pre-order for months and here it is the 24th (technically) and they haven't charged my CC or changed the order to "shipping soon" or changed the shipping estimate or anything.
