I wasn't saying to literally emulate those films.

My point was that both Guardians and Bridesmaids had certain audiences. One of them made piles and piles of money in merchandising - everything from action figures to clothes to lunchboxes to backpacks to costumes and beyond - and one of them didn't.

Sony needs all the money they can get. If you're a movie exec, which sounds more appealing to you: the movie which might do well at the B.O. but have no merchandise, or the movie which might do well at the B.O. and then sell tons in merchandise?

Pretty much every male kid in the 80s was into Ghostbusters. Imagine if the first Ghostbusters was an all women team -- would there have been cartoons, action figures, toys, lunchboxes, clothes? Would all those little boys in the 80s have been obsessed with Ghostbusters if it was a "girls movie"? No way.

Ghostbusters merchandise still exists, but it's kind of moved on from the child demographic to the Generation X/Millennial collectors (in other words, the demographic who were kids when the movies came out).

What does it matter how little boys in the 80s would react to a hypothetical all-female Ghostbusters team? I understand merchandising is a huge deal and growing up in the early 90s, I was a huge Ghostbusters (and Ninja Turtles) fan/collector of toys and tie-in junk.

Because Sony is hard up for cash and it makes more sense to make a Ghostbusters movie that can bring in the kind of money you can make from merchandise aimed at kids, ie Guardians of the Galaxy.

Ghostbusters also isn't really a kids movie (there are quite a few randy jokes that go way over most kids' heads) even though a lot of kids obviously saw it. When you look at it, the vast majority of the toys and other merchandise for kids was centered around The Real Ghostbusters cartoon.

Edit: And to relate this to my point above, most of the merchandise now aimed at the adult collector is focused on the live-action portion of the franchise.

I know but you brought up how 80s children would have reacted and that has nothing to do with the present day so I was confused.

Yep, the cartoon was the primary draw. I remember the hellhounds in the movie scared the living shit out of me as a kid. I mean, I loved dogs then and now but effin' A, man! That was terrifying as a child.

Any guy who's complaining about this will still go see it and slobber over all the hot women in the cast (not literally, I hope).

Sony needs to get Gene Simmons in on this.

Hey, I'm all for more films starring women, so you won't get shit from me... even if your main reason for seeing it is because they're hot.

Well, my point was that if Ghostbusters featured an all-woman team in the 80s, boys in the 80s wouldn't have gone crazy over it the way they did, and thus all that merchandise wouldn't have been made or sold. Kids still slobber over movie merchandise today the same way they did in the 80s, so I felt it was relevant.

I just think Sony should be aiming for a movie more along the lines of Guardians of the Galaxy, that you can market to anyone, including adults and young boys who will bankrupt their parents having them buy all the merchandise.

My real point is that with an all-woman Ghostbusters movie, Sony is missing out on the money that can be brought in from young boys. Can there be merchandise for the female Ghostbusters movie? Sure. But not as much as there could be if the movie and toys could be marketed to young boys.

Reason I said that is cause people go "oh, you're sexist" You'd watch a movie with hot girls in it. But bad talk a movie that stars Melissa McCarthy cause he's plus sized. But more movies starring women are good. the latest thing I'm writing has a woman as the lead. A lot of my stuff does actually.

Are you saying you bad talk a movie that stars Melissa McCarthy because she's plus sized or because you just don't think she's funny/right for the role?

I still think you should be focusing on what kids today like, not kids from the 80s.

Also, it's nice that Sony might be making a movie that doesn't exclusively target young boys, unlike 99% of all Hollywood blockbusters. We should be praising them for that, unless the end product ends up sucking.

Some people think just cause you don't like a person cause it's of their weight. I was accused of this before on here. I said i didn't like one movie of hers cause i didn't think she was funny in it.

Ghostbusters. Wasn't made. For a kid audience.

Not at all.

When the film was written, shot, and released through the late 1970s and early 1980s, it was clearly with the intention of being primary viewed by a general adult audience. And back then the PG rating covered a much broader range (currently the movie would probably be considered a low PG-13).

It wasn't until after the movie was released and showed to be a big hit with kids that they greenlit the animated series spinoff, and THAT is what the toys were based on. You look at virtually ever Ghostbusters item for kids back in the 80s and early 90s, it was for the Real Ghostbusters; for the cartoon.

So your point focusing on kids merchandise and the original movie is really off base.
