I think he's hoping that Scream will release those two Return of the Living Dead sequels, similar to what they did with the Sleepaway Camp sequels.

I'm less than thrilled with the presentation on the MGM BD, so if Scream can improve upon that, I'm definitely game.

He means, like Sleepaway Camp, that this will lead to Shout releasing RotLD 2, and 3. Won't happen though with those coming from WB, and Lionsgate

The problem is it might not really be "definitive".

Though I agree the Shout negativity is over the top (and quite annoying). Mods should almost start using the banhammer on certain users that pollute every freaking thread.

The hate was kinda around last year when the Halloween set was coming out, but it definitely hit critical mass with the Dog Soldiers CE.

I guess that movie had such a devoted cult following, the dodgy new transfer really broke the camel's back or something.

Sorry I don't have a link and the pages that had screencaps are gone or the ones that still exist didn't have that cap or the very few of them.

It was more the triple-whammy of Escape From New York, Mad Max and Dog Soldiers. All three of those arguably look worse than previous BDs of those movies. Mad Max objectively does. After a long history of occasional compression issues those three kind of broke the camel's back.

I like Scream. When I complain it is because I have something to complain about.

If the original audio is included in lossless form then I will buy. The Second Sight edition only has it in lossy.

People keep touting the UK disc as being region A friendly, but omit the fact thst most of the extras from the UK disc are unplayable for region A players. Thankfully the most important one, the more brains doc, is playable.

New transfer? Fix framing? Soundtrack? Maybe they will, but
the Scream negativity is based on the quality of the product they release.
If they want to be the Criterion of Horror they will do all those things and secure the rights to include More Brains.
That would be quite a package to cheer about.
Perhaps they turn it around but IMO- don't hold your breath.

Other than matching the UK release I am not sure what they have to add to convince people to buy this. Obviously for people who do not own it it will be great but I would imagine most fans already own a copy or two.
It will be interesting to see if they bring anything new to the table.

I'm content with the UK steelbook. Was hoping for a release of RotLD Part II, as that has no current bluray release

Plus a lot of people buy Scream CEs just to have them, it seems.

I haven't gotten around to getting the UK disc yet but was going to soon. Now I have to decide whether to go ahead and get it or wait to see what Scream announce. Decisions, decisions...
I own the MGM US disc and will watch that come October (never seen it in HD), in the same situation as you but I'm going to wait. If the Scream release adds lossless original audio and the More Brains doc then I'm sold on that alone. I'd be ok with them reusing the same MGM transfer and it just being slightly worse due to compression, because I'd be worried at the prospect of them doing a new transfer given how controversial Escape from New York and Dog Soldiers turned out.

Can someone explain the soundtrack issue. Is there a huge difference between the original and altered one? I've only seen the movie once a few years ago via the Second Sight release, and I loved it, but I don't know if I even used the original soundtrack version (audio option 3)

I just skipped around to a few scenes, and the soundtrack sounds the pretty much the same between altered and original, though the original audio option is much louder and clearer. I didn't do a thorough search though.

hopefully return of the living dead will have the deleted scenes/alternate ending from the workprint or even include the workprint as a special feature

One example includes swapping out Dead Beat Dance for a different punk song when Suicide is first driving his car across the rail road tracks.

There are other instances of different music cues. Also in the original audio the Confederate soldier talks with a New York accent

Like many of us here who grew up watching this movie on vhs the altered audio is distracting.

I see, thanks. Probably nothing I would notice I suppose, though I'll no doubt make sure to listen to the original next time I see it. It's the best sounding option on the UK disc anyway, so I'm sure I must have used it when I first watched it (not sure if it defaults to it automatically, will have to see).
