I thought this was as good as the first one, but I really wish Duvall had returned as Cash.

Default I liked it

I read the review of how bad the film was, but bought it anyway cause I'm a Tom Cruise fan (now 13 Tom blus in my collection). Good flick in my opinion. Cobie was great and I would like to see her character in another one (or spin-off where she goes around kicking people's asses!!). I do understand why others may not enjoy it as much especially due to the predictable unthinking kid behavior. Otherwise very entertaining.

[Show spoiler]Though, at the big reveal, while we waited for Tom to speak up, I wanted to yell at the screen "Its DRUGS!!"

This was okaaaaaay. I enjoyed the main story but good lord that daughter subplot was absolutely awful and such a colossal drag every time the movie focused on it. The payoff in that subplot was pathetic too. It just really didn't work for me. The action scenes were quite good and Cruise was great as always. I really don't think Ed Zwick is suited to an action thriller at all though, not his comfort zone and I think a better director could have punched this up more.

Finally watched this. It's a pretty decent little action-thriller. The problem is it's a sequel to one of the best action-thrillers this decade. It's also a Tom Cruise vehicle and he usually picks better-than-average material. Never Go Back is pretty average, so it seems terrible compared to its expectations.

That end fight is super rad though.

Movie has a weird look to it. Digital treated to look like film but with lots of digital tweaks maybe? It looks processed in some way. That might be why the UHD has some iffy reviews, it might make all that more obvious.

According to imdb tech specs, which have usually been spot on, says it was shot on film, must have just been all post production tweaks.

Good lookin' out. Probably just tweaked so much digitally it looks weird in some ways. Definitely a lot of face-smoothing going on in certain scenes. I wish when they make the great decision to use film they didn't treat it to the point of making that irrelevant. Even effects-heavy spectacles like Jurassic World and The Force Awakens still managed to look film-like most of the time.

I agree. The first film was fantastic and this one would have had to perform a miracle to match that one's quality. And Cruise's career has had some bombs, but lately he has been on a role. I was expecting a decent movie based on Cruise's reputation and the untapped potential of the whole Jack Reacher series of novels. This film offered decent action sequences and story concepts, but nothing truly substantial. The whole production felt rushed and amateur compared to its predecessor.

The look of the film is likely a result of being filmed on a soundstage for some scenes. I noticed this particularly on the rooftop scene near the end.

Did anyone notice Cruise was looking a little chubbier in this one? His face was definitely thicker and his torso also. I noticed how careful they were with the angles when he had his top off, unlike the first movie where he was in better shape.

not having a crack at the guy, he's awesome, just an observation.

The soundstage location was very obvious and distracting in the finale. However the movie has definitely been digitally smoothed over in a number of scenes.

Cruise is finally looking his age and perhaps face-lifted, though that could be CG smoothing. I thought the same of Brad Pitt in Allied the other day.

It's funny that you mentioned that. I actually just watched Allied as well as the amount of CGI in the film is unruly. There was so much of it that it was a distraction, but at least the film was still decent.

Allied is by Zemeckis, there was always gonna be tons of CG lol

But yeah, Pitt did look his age for the first time possibly ever. Same with Cruise in JR2, though less so.

Of course but I didn't think he was looking much older, just a little heavier. He looks back to his usual self in the trailer for The Mummy.

Just watched it.
It's not that he aged, it's that it LOOKS like he suddenly aged.

But there's a reason;

He's puffy. "Puffy" swells the cheeks, and slightly closes the eyes of said person, making one appear older than they should look.

Maybe he drinks? (Think Ben Affleck. He's always had that problem). Maybe he had a lot of sodium or salt in his diet?
Because he looks puffier (older) in some scenes more than others. He looks the least puffy, hence the youngest, in the scene in the car after "the girl" comes out from inside the cabinet under her drawings. Notice Cruise's face in the car following that scene. Younger. Less puff

Pretty sure what we're seeing is the effects of some plastic surgery, or at least some sort of facial augmentation, à la Botox.

Oh, Botox?
But, he's smart enough to know the amount of time to schedule some injections or plastic surgery prior to shooting scenes, right?

I understand when a celebrity like a Khloe Kardashian gets lip injections on Monday (for the upcoming weekend) but is caught by TMZ on Tuesday. The lips are still too big. Still too swollen. Her intention is to look her best on Friday... Etc

But either way, to me, "puffy" or "swollen" via either too much alcohol or too much sodium or injections...Etc it's all about the area around his eyes making his eyes look smaller, hence more tired, hence older.

.
