Donnie Brasco worth owning?

The first time I watched Donnie Brasco I wasn't too impressed. Not a horrible movie, but it was just kind of "blah". Might have been my mood because I picked it up on blu ray for $10 a couple of weeks back and really liked it the second time around. It is a character movie more than anything, and as such the solid performances by Depp/Pachino are especially crucial.

I purchased this Blu Ray on Amazon late last year and didn't watch it until a couple of weeks ago. The PQ is great and a good character study. However, it's not a movie I feel like watching again so I sold it off. I would save my money for Goodfellas Blu Ray if you don't already own it. Donnie Brasco is definitely worth watching but I'm not sure if it's worth owning.

Is there an 'original cut' version of this film on blu ray? I've seen the extended cut and felt the extra footage and alternate takes don't work as well as the original version.

I felt the same way about the movie. I watched it in the theater and really liked it. I almost bought it for like $5 used at BBV but didn't cause I figured I might watch it once and that's it. I think it's a really good movie. But not so re-watchable for me. Goodfellas, yeah, now that I can watch.

I did a bit of research and it looks like this film is not available in the original version on blu ray. If this is mistaken, let me know where I can find it.

No, only the extended version is available on blu.

As for the thread title, yes, it is definitely worth owning. Personally, I think it's Pacino's best 90s movie after Heat.

For me it edges it out, along with Carlito's Way, Scent of a Woman and The Devil's Advocate. But I am fully aware that someone might have a different favorite since they are very close as is indicated by their IMDB ratings.

Huh? I like Donnie Brasco a lot, but truly dislike The Insider. I fell asleep watching The Insider as nothing really happens during the entire movie

That's funny, I didn't know that but stumbled across the story a few minutes ago while googling Pacino. That will either be really cool or just too distracting to get past.

Bobby Cannavale is a good choice for Roma. I've really liked him since Third Watch.

It's region free.

And as for the review of this blu ray on this site, can't remember if I already mentioned it here but I don't know how the hell it only got 0.5 stars for the extras. It has two documentaries, about 30 minutes of extra material. There's no way it should be getting 0.5, the same grade a blu ray gets for the extras on this site if it only has a theatrical trailer.

Thanks for the reply anytime i see it on the internet it has this ,Donnie Brasco: The Extended Cut (1997) (Blu-ray) (Region 1 DVD) Puts me off buying it incase it doesnt work on my Blu Ray player

Didn't think that much of "Glengarry Glen Ross" -- there's a big hole in the script. But Pacino is amazing in it.
