Yes, the UK release is region free, even though Amazon UK listed the blu-ray as Region B. I personally have this release, and I can confirm it's region A & B, since I don't have a region free blu-ray player.

Here is the back cover of the UK release, showing the region A and B symbols:

Thanks - just ordered it.

Having re-watched it for the first time in 4-5 years reminded me how much I always enjoyed this movie.

I highly doubt this movie will ever be remastered.

I think the OP was so excited to watch the famous Sharon Stone scene that it slipped his mind how poor of a BD this is. The PQ is pretty bad, let alone I cant imagine on a 58 inch.

I'm watching on a 65" and the DNR is worse in motion compared to the screencaps. What I mean by that is, in motion faces and objects become more unnaturally blurred than what is natural during motion. It seems to be applied by some older form of filtering software. The DNR is just so heavy and the image does seem just slightly too dark - something the UK version also seems to improve upon.

Well, the UK version arrived from Amazon UK (Just $15 shipped). I spent about 30 minutes A/Bing various scenes to the U.S. version and no question about it as discussed, the UK version is clearly superior. Better detail, no distracting DNR, perhaps a bit less EE, and it's a bit brighter than the overly murky U.S. version. The little extra brightness also makes the color look more natural.

At first I was like crap - I have blown my Blu budget lately, and since this is one of my favorite films I was forced to just order it. But since it's so cheap it's great, I don't mind at all. Glad I saw this thread. Thanks for all the info, guys.

That said, do any of the international versions of BI2 have better transfers I don't know about? Yes, yes, the movie is crap but if you just watch Stone's scenes it's actually a whole different picture and highly entertaining. She is totally channeling Crawford here (I believe quite literally that was her intention - she is a huge Crawford fan and purportedly owns one of the original outfits from Johnny Guitar).

Whatever can be said for it's story shortcomings, it's a gorgeously shot film and the Blu is just terrible. It's one of the early releases in the format, outdated encoding, DNR up the rear, and it's a shame (the scenes in her apartment with the leather wall coverings was stunning in the theater, on Blu you can't even really tell).

Since it's considered a bomb, and doesn't even really have a "cult" following, I'm not holding my breath for a new US version, but I'd pay big bucks to get a foreign version that looked better.

EDIT: Wow, I just checked Amazon UK, and they don't even seem to have a UK version? All they list are US imports. Crazy.

The first film definitely wasn't a bomb. It cost under $50 million to make and grossed over $350 million worldwide (and that was in 1992). It is a favorite of mine and I fear Lionsgate isn't in any rush to remaster it any time soon.

This movie is screaming for a 4K ReMaster, with no DNR, no EE and a nice layer of film grain, along with perfect color balance.
I would love a new transfer of this great movie.

Verhoeven's Total Recall and Robocop have gotten the treatment so hopefully it's next.

This was a beautifully filmed movie, IMO, and could look really nice and film-like on Blu remastered.

I would imagine there would need to be some kind of tie-in, however, to a new movie being released?

Considering that every other classic Verhoeven movie is getting remade, I'm sure a PG-13 Basic Instinct rehash is in the works.

Can everyone who is a fan of this film message Lionsgate either by email or on their Facebook asking for a remaster? This movie NEEDS to look better.

I watched the UK version. Not really impressed but maybe it was 'cause I just couldn't get into the movie. As many good scenes as she had, there was always one or two more that ... well, imho, sucked. Gotta face it, I'm just not a big Sharon Stone fan.

Did it look and sound good? What would you rate it out of 5 like on this site for pq and aq?
