I just bought Stargate Atlantis: Season 4 on DVD but I hope it's the last DVD(s) I buy. If I do cave in, it'll most likely be TV related DVDs.

Didn't read through all the posts but I wont blow anymore money on DVD s knowing that 3 major producers, Sony, Disney and Lionsgate , have announced that 2009 is the last year they will support the DVD format.

Where did you hear that. That would be a really bad idea. I still purchase DVD's and a lot of people have not gone Hi Def.

As I have posted many times to this exact same question hell yes I still buy DVD's. I love movies and some very good movies are only on DVD. Many of the movies I love are small studio or not well known so they may take years to arrive on blu. They took this long to show up on DVD after all. Many people unfortunately are more into a format than a movie.

Link to that please as you can count on that not happening any time in the near future. Sorry but there are way to many DVD players out there in the wild for them to just stop supporting them.

Default Upconversion

As far as feature films go, I'm pretty much on board with most of the comments here. Waiting patiently (?!) for the BD releases. I certainly haven't dumped all of my DVDs though (a few of them, yes). Some of my anamorphic SDs upconvert well, some VERY well (Hitchcock's The Birds looks horrible while North by Northwest looks pretty darn good). Most of my collection consists of older catalog titles, many of which will not be seeing a BD release anytime soon (if ever). I still have laserdiscs of titles that have yet to get an official SD release (Magnetic Monster, etc.), so many of these are keepers as far as I'm concerned. I still have the SD of Forbidden Planet (Man, that killed me when it was released exclusively on HD)...

Was in an article about Toshiba s new "Blu ray Killer" that can take a plain ordinary DVD disc and convert it into high definition using some type of magical new processor they developed.

http://formatwarcentral.com/index.ph...lu-ray-killer/

Not the exact article but the one I read also listed 2009 releases including 28 months later, tons of Disney releases etc etc and a note that all titles after 2009 will be released in high def formats only.

I did a search and could not find anything stating that Disney will not support DVD after 2009. Are you trying to start a rumor?

I didi refuse to buy DVDs for last 4 years. With the only exception of Firefly series. It was difficult, sometimes very tempting, but in the end worked out pretty well

Nah I wouldn't do that. I've been Googling like mad trying to find it again, wish I would have book marked it

This is the closest mention that I could find and it was just speculation in the "Toshiba upset" thread. And then a couple of other people agreed that it would be "cool".

I still rent DVDs, but I haven't purchased a new release DVD in years.

+1 I couldn't have said it better. I want to buy a laserdisc player because there are certain editions of movies that you can only get on the format. The same goes for dvd. Example, The Frighteners on LD is an extended edition that you can only get on LD. The 3-disc set of Hellboy on dvd is also amazing. Also, Eyes Wide Shut looks better on dvd in my opinion. Blu-ray is amazing, don't get me wrong, its just that I refuse to let a format dictate what movies I watch.

There have been reports out recently (don't have a link off hand) that said Blu-ray sales won't even take over DVD sales until at least 2010. There is no way in the world this is happening by next year.
