Yes, How The West Was Won is fantastic on blu-ray. Also, may I mention the complete soundtrack is nothing short of amazing. It's one of my pride and joys in my collection. I'm talking about the 2-disc cd set released Turner Classic Movies.

Loaded up the smilebox blu on the big screen today and im completely just like wow, im so blown away. After a few minutes it actually felt like I was looking at a curved screen, the illusion held up through the whole film.(my theater room is pitch dark which no doubt helped) What a disc! I'd hop on a uhd of this in a heartbeat.

I love this film. Terrific western action especially on the riverboat and the train. Seeing
the restoration in the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood is one of the great pleasures of my
moviegoing life. I also toured the restoration facility where the Cinerama screen and
projectors were rebuilt. The "smilebox" blu-ray does it full justice.

Money burns a hole in my pocket for a 4K scan.

One of the all-time great classic American westerns.

I also got to watch it at the Cinerama dome a few years ago. It was an astonishing spectacle!

They just played it last fall in the Dome. I missed it, though.

The Dome wouldn't be showing it if people weren't buying tickets.

I'm glad there's still an audience for an old Hollywood western in Cinerama.

That means a lot.

I saw HTWWW in its initial release at the RKO Grand CINERAMA in Columbus, Ohio, as part of a high school field trip. The experience was breathtaking.

You're sitting in the theater and the overture begins to play with music and voices from all directions. As the overture comes to its conclusion, the lights go down, and the curtain pulls back, and back, and back revealing the huge curved screen. The credits roll accompanied by, arguably, Arnold Newman's finest score, preparing and enveloping the audience for what follows.

The only other 3-strip CINERAMA film I saw was TWWOTBG -- which was good, but HTWWW left it in the dust. I'd love to see HTWWW in 3-strip CINERAMA again. The Blu-ray release is a thing of beauty.

FWIW, I hate it when I have to do a search to figure out somebody's abbreviations, but YMMV.

HTWWW = How the West Was Won
TWWOTBG = The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm

The first is the subject of this thread. The second is the film that immediately preceded it in CINERAMA theaters.

All good, I deduced the first, had to look up Cinerama Three-Strip films to figure out what you were referring to in the second. Still haven't seen that film. Any good?

I've only ever seen TWWOTBG on laserdisc. Wish I could watch it in 3-strip Cinerama... though I've heard restoration would be very difficult

in 4 later.

To reconfirm: To date, only one release with the SmileBox version, right, the Digibook?

All of the international releases, such as the UK and Australian releases, include the SmileBox disc.

Yes, the SmileBox disc was only included in the digibook release in the US.

As discussed before, it appears there's only the one bluray release with the Smilebox. But, does it stream anyplace with Smilebox? Are there any Smilebox films that stream digitally.

Our local Cinerama (Seattle) has been closed awhile and today, news came out that it may be done for good. So I've never seen the smilebox edition (or cinerama version, though I'm not sure if the Seattle Cinerama ever showed that).

So I came here looking and see the digipack is the only Blu with that version.

Question of the page (though I did look back a few): What's the skinny on a 4K version?

Chris

All of the international releases of "How the West Was Won" included the Smilebox disc and you can at least nab the UK release for cheap.
