The movie deviates from the book dramtically. Almost not even the same...kinda.

[Show spoiler]It's fantasy. I believe that it's seen as some far off hidden strange land, and not explained in much more detail. The tornado picks up her house and deposits her far away. Kind of how on those Ripley Believe it or nots, they have had cows picked up by tornados are dropped unharmed several states away. It has been a while though, so I could be not remembering entirely.

i'm not exactly sure what "cop out ending" means...perhaps the OP can clarify? a bad (inconsistent with story-line) ending? an ending that encourages discussion?

[Show spoiler] I thought it was pretty obvious Miles was gonna try to get back with Maya. Especially after the phone call he got from her

Okay, this thread should just get locked down. The mods are wasting waaay to much black ink on this one.

By the way, Darth Vader is Luke's father! Yes, it's true!

Not sure I agree with that.
[Show spoiler]As I recall, he was able to learn the Portugese language pretty fast which helped him save that little boy. He also gave his friend some Portugese phrases to learn when he was looking for a maid, and that woman eventually became his wife.

Silent Hill! It was a pretty good movie until the end. What happened?

though I loved the movie...the ending to No Country For Old Men killed me. So many unanswered questions. Did he die? One leads you to believe he did, who ended up with the money. You'd think Anton Chigurh ends up with it since he gives the little kid at the end of the movie $100 for his t-shirt to ace his arm.

The Matrix at the point realized that mankind and robots could live in peace and were even willing to sacrafice for one another, so there was no point in killing off mankind.
Because the Machines made it more than clear that they were willing to live without the Matrix, and that they detested humanity. I would have much preferred an all out win for the humans, Neo using his external powers to kill the machines or something....

In my view, it is an ending that provides a facile conclusion, lets characters off the hook and sidesteps all conflict the film has posed throughout, with no regard to plot, character or theme consistence, often making whole chunks of the movie irrelevant.

For example: the 1982 theatrical cut of Blade Runner. The film spends two hours immersing you in an oppressive, overcrowded, despondent world. The leading guy falls in love with a replicant (which, apart from being outlaws, have 4-year life spans).

Then, in the very last scene
[Show spoiler]They ride happily into the sunset and we're told Rachael had no termination date.

If you have the Blu-ray, listen to what Frank Darabont has to say about that. It is quite funny.

that's actually a more clear definition that i thought was capable. however, i find that when i see a "suprise ending", its usually because my "interpretation" of the plot/themes has been one-dimensional, and the ending is based on another dimension i hadn't considered, thus allowing my mind to wonder refreshing no?

What are you guys talking about who don't get the ending? What's not to get? The main character dies, the bad guy gets away (he doesn't care about the money, just his pledge to kill Lewellen), and the sheriff is left where he started, no closer to the killer, feeling helpless and hopeless. Just because it's realistic doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

Oh I don't think anything is wrong with the ending. I was merely pointing out that the poster that I was replying to wouldn't like the ending as its a cliff hanger.

[Show spoiler]Technically we do not know how it ends as it fades to black. Remember how they made the parallel between his book and the actual movie and the ending of the book was that it was left up to the reader's imagination. Therefore that poster may think that its a cop-out ending by not having an ending and leaving it up to your own interpretation. Though in my personal opinion I enjoyed the ending as I thought it was very appropriate with how it held true to the movie and doesn't go all Hollywood.

I can completely understand why people dislike NCFOM and it's ending. However to really understand this film you have to understand the characters and the time in America that this film takes place. IMO of course.

Well the only part of the ending I disliked was the fact that they didn't show what happened to Llewelyn yet they literally showed everything else. It felt too abrupt. We followed him all the way up to that point and suddenly, BAM, its done and we aren't going to show you what happened.
