james cameron bets the farm on all his movies. most of the time he directs his movies for nothing and gets a percentage of the box office. if i was taking that chance i would do everything i could to make it the best i could. i'm really interested in seeing what this is going to look like, seeing that they created a new digital HD 3D camera to use for it. i'm definitely glad that it sounds like he is making a movie that happens to be in 3D. rather than lets make a 3D movie and see how much randow stuff we can throw at the audience and show off the 3D.

Well, if it cost 200 million for the production budget and anywhere from 50-100 million for advertising, then it would have to make at least 500 million worldwide to break even (roughly speaking). If the actual costs for the production is closer to 300, then it would need to make even more to break even. I guess it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. lol.

$300 million is a crapload of money to spend on a movie, even if the director had a $1.8 billion hit with his last movie. Pirates 3 had a $300 million budget, but that's because Pirates 2 made $1 billion and Disney was certain that Pirates 3 would make $900+ million. And sure enough it made $960 million. Avatar is not a known commodity like a sequel in a major franchise, so spending this kind of money on it seems absurd.

This movie will probably be a pretty big tank.

After years of toying around with the story and trying to find "new" CGI he couldn't afford, he chucked the entire story in the basket, but kept his ownership right to the title, and did some alien-planet story...And, er, finds some excuse to have something named "Avatar", to keep the metaphorical alibi.

Eric -- from what I understand, the story is about a person manipulating a physical representation of himself in a real-time context on a distant alien world...a true avatar, not just some picture in a chat room. Why should it not be called Avatar?

Yeah, it could be Watchmen on a bigger scale. Bigger budget, better box office, but still a failure overall. If they're spending in the range of $300 million, they'll also be spending a lot on marketing so that they can at least try to get that money back. So probably $100 million in marketing. The theaters get at least 40% of the box office receipts when it's all said and done, so a studio would need at least $667 million worldwide box office total to break even before home video sales on a film with $400 million spent on production/marketing.

Default Actually closer to $200 mil. I heard today

I read today (www.darkhorizons.com) that it wasn't $300 or whatever million, they said it was closer to $200 (possibly a bit more, but not Near $300 mil.) - talked about some footage screened.

Read below for full story:

Thumbs up

I'm not sure what to expect from this movie, other than a multitude of eye candy (WETA Digital is handling the special fx) & hopefully a great sci-fi flick that injects some life into a stale genre. And regardless of the budget....I'm just glad it's not another horrendous Hollywood re-make like: I Am Legend/War Of The Worlds/The Day The Earth Stood Still were.

Default Cameron's Avatar MAY be a Trilogy!

How cool would this be...seriously. Provided Cameron actually writes and directs all 3 movies, an Avatar trilogy could be the next best thing for the sci-fi genre (imo of course ). Reported over at Movieweb, Collider spoke with actor Laz Alonso who revealed that the upcoming film Avatar could be the first part of a trilogy of films.
Quote:
The script was so guarded under lock and key that he is sworn to secrecy on plot, but [Alonso] did let it slip that he was glad "to have the opportunity to be a part of this trilogy".

Read entire interview here.

This might have been a major slip up, or simply a misunderstanding. Regardless, I haven't been able to garner much discussion about this movie from the members here, so I would love to here everyone's input...are you excited to see it? Apathetic? Dislike Cameron to begin with?

If you don't know much about this movie, here's the discussion thread for it which contains a lot of info: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=70029

I remember this that he said both Avatar and Battle Angel could be trilogies if successful!

Default what, another 12 years for pt. 2?!

Titanic - his last theatrical film, came out in 1997. Then in between him impersonating Jacques Cousteau over the last however many years, he's been doing this, and working on the technology, developing new camera operating systems, etc., etc. Which brings us to 2009 and AVATAR coming out this fall I think, right? Let's HOPE "if" this is a Trilogy, parts 2 & 3 don't take HALF as long, right?!

Default AVATAR - 197 Cameras, at once?!

http://www.collider.com/entertainmen...d/11483/tcid/1

I hope this wasn't posted -- and I DID look first -- but this is a short interview with the guy who played Vin Diesel's main nemesis in the new FAST & FURIOUS, who's in James Cameron's AVATAR. Pretty good stuff.
