you didn't say the magic words in order for us to help you in this case...
"i am using the ps3 (fat)(slim) start with which one you have. next for the onkyo, i recommend setting the listening mode to multichannel. also for "listening mode bd/dvd) i recommend:
DD - DD
DTS - DTS
Dolby TrueHD - Dolby TrueHD
DTS-HD-MA - DTS-HD-MA
DSD - DSD
MULTICHANNEL PCM - MULTICHANNEL
ANALOG/PCM - DIRECT

Onkyo users will understand what the above settings mean; check your listening modes menu in your setup menu. these are settings i recommend under that setup menu option as these are settings i use right now on my own Onkyo.

i'll waste my time saying it but if you have the ps3 fat, your out of luck because it can't bitstream HD codecs, however it will decode all of them onboard and stream them out as an LPCM via HDMI giving you full lossless sound via HDMI and your receiver should say "multichannel PCM" (or something like that)
if your using the ps3 slim, go into the video settings, under HDMI and set it to betstream not LPCM if you want to stream the raw HD codecs out and let your receiver do the decoding; this way you get the receiver to show the codec light. we like to call them "vanity lights" and yes, i do love seeing them on my receiver as well.

best of luck, keep us posted.

Looking through your pictures I noticed you have a non slim PS3. The PS3 slim is the only PS3 that will bitstream DTS-HD or DD-HD. So you will not be able to see the fancy light on your receiver. You still have HD audio though. It is just passed as PCM from the PS3 to the receiver. I think..

Thanks for all information guys. So, it sounds like the only way I am going to see those lights on my receiver is if I upgrade to the PS3 Slim?

Thanks Again.

I have a 607 and had the same problem once you upgrade to a slim set your listening mode presets in the 607 menu to Direct then it will display the lights you seek.

I thought I would post my weird issue in here than open up another "Problem with my Onkyo 607" thread.

Anyway, my parents wanted to watch a movie on my Panasonic BD60 which is connected by HDMI to the Onkyo. When I first got my BD60/Onkyo my TV was having issues connecting as the Onkyo kept resetting to Automatic resolution through HDMI, forcing my setting of 720P back to Automatic and using 1080P because of the Onkyo. The problem is was that my TV only supports 720P/1080i so I would only get audio. I got around the problem by forcing the Onkyo from Passthrough to 720P.

So this weekend, my parents wanted to watch a movie on it and for some reason the Onkyo was just showing a black screen even though I could hear audio, which seemed to be the same problem as before. I tried hitting the "Video" button on the Onkyo remote to force it to 720P, but it showed "Not Available" on the front of the receiver. In the past this was working and now it is showing "Not Available" for that function. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong? Can someone help? The only way I have figured out to make it work is to do what I did before I found about the Video Change, hook up composite cables to the BD60 and manually change it the video settings to 720P and then hope it lasts for a day or two.

This sucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i had issues trying to get the bd60 set to 1080i through my onk 705 as well. i tried to explain how i re-set it each time on one or two threads. ill try to find it. but the best way to avoid this problem once you set it is to always turn on the bd60 LAST when watching a movie and turn off the bd60 FIRST when your done.

edit:this is what i did each time. you may not need it since you got it to work before.

Default Listening modes for PCM

I have a fat PS3 hooked up with HDMI to my onkyo 607. I set my ps3 to Linear PCM and usually set the receiver to Multichannel PCM (when I had my 5.1 speaker system).

Now that I have a 7.1 system, I have selected the ProLogic IIz (or is it IIx?) mode to be able to get the 7.1 system to work. My question is, am I getting my "lossless" PCM signal just replicated to make the 5.1 into a 7.1, or am I actually degrading it? Is there any other way to get 7.1 from my PS3 when its outputting a 5.1 TrueHD or DTS-MA HD as a PCM?

I definitely want 7.1 sound, but don't want to compromise on the "lossless" aspect of the True HD or DTS-MA HD.

Hope this makes sense...

You are still getting lossless. The back speakers are 'matrixed' in by moving parts of the surrounds to the back surrounds. When you play a BD that has a 7.1 soundtrack, it will play normally on all speakers (PLIIx will not change it).

Short answer - yes, you are fine. Now sit back and watch some movies.

Cool. That's what I was hoping. I was hoping to put ceiling speakers for the full 9.1 effect (IIz) but apparently you can only use 7.1 at a time. If that is so then I would have to disconnect the REAR surrounds and enable the HEIGH speakers (along with the center/L+R front/L+R surround and subwofer). Am I correct on that?

I'm not sure but that sounds correct. You have to choose 7.1 or 5.1 with DSX.

BTW - When you say 'ceiling speakers', you don't mean speakers actually in the ceiling, do you? I believe it would be very unlikely they would do a good job with DSX.

I meant for the IIz HEIGHT surround speakers. They advertise the receiver (onkyo 607) can do 9.1 speakers, but apperantly it can't do the HEIGHT and SURROUND + SURROUND REAR at the same time

Default Onkyo TX-SR607 won't recognize Dolby Source

Hi all,

I just got an Onkyo TX-SR607 and am still learning the ins and outs. The setup has been working fine until last night, when suddenly the receiver failed to recognize my Xbox 360 as a Dolby Digital source. To alleviate the problem, I have to go to My Xbox > System Settings > Console Settings > Audio, choose Digital Stereo and then switch back to Dolby Digital 5.1. Once I do this, the receiver works fine and audio comes in full surround.

I obviously don't want to have to do this regularly. I was curious if anyone had any better ideas how to fix this. I have a Harmony One, so I thought perhaps the sequence/timing of devices turning on may not allow the 607 enough time to recognize the Xbox's audio? The strange thing is that this only started last night and I've had this setup for 2 weeks now. Any help is appreciated!

how long have you owned the 607 and how long after you had it did this problem start. has the receiver ever recognized the xbox as a DD source and then after multiple uses it stopped or was this the first time you used the xbox and it didn't recognize it?
please articulate your answers well as the timeline of events is important for the solution. i have perhaps an idea but i need good facts to see if what i'm thinking even applies.

keep us posted

for this reason especially with the 360, i turn on my receiver and tv first then boot up the 360. otherwise it may revert to the component video/stereo output. of course this is for hdmi connection. are you using hdmi?

Thanks for the quick reply! I have owned the 607 for two weeks now and it just started last night. So it was working for about two weeks. It had always recognized the Xbox before, whether it was the first "activity" of the night or not (i.e. if I had watched a movie beforehand on my PS3). What is your idea?

I just turned my system on again and it does in fact turn the 360 on first. I will play around with the settings in the Harmony software and see if this works. I am using HDMI. Thanks!

I changed my remote to turn them on in that order (receiver, TV, 360) and it didn't fix the issue Does the receiver need a few seconds of boot-up time do you think? If that's the case, I could change those settings around. This is just so frustrating, because it has been working with no problems until last night.

with my 705, it seems to take a second to configure itself. but if you set your remote to turn on receiver first, tv then 360 it should be enough time. try doing it manually without the remote to make sure and test what configuration and length of time may work. then again, could be another issue
