A pair of well-trained:

Provided you can keep them under control. Dicey to kill. Won't get enough shots off fast enough to take one down with regular caliber ammunition, and I don't think anyone carries any potent neurotoxin-equipped Lindstradt rifles when robbing homes anyway,

In any case, my house is built like a fort, limited window openings, cameras outside (the previous owner was a bit paranoid, for good reason - long story) - fencing, alarm. Besides, living in a safe enough neighborhood right off a main street helps, too.

They can TRY for the Window, but I'd suggest against it seeing as how it's about 90 feet from the ground.

Signs are as effective of a deterrent for burglers as they are for smokers, litterbugs, speeders, shoplifters, cell-phone users, etc.

If you're put in the unfortunate situation where someone may try to do you harm it is always best to be in a position where you are capable of protecting yourself.

Afterall...when seconds count the police are minutes away. Besides, the courts have ruled that they (police) are not required to defend or protect you anyway.

As usual, Camper, we're on the same wavelength. For when I'm home:
Watchmen1911_A_sm.jpg
When no one is home, we've got an alarm and a good neighborhood watch program, but more importantly we have insurance.

A trained guard dog is best.

Gun won't help if you're not home.

Alarm systems take too long to respond to. Statistics show that thieves are in the home 3-5 mins, that's all. I have ADT, and there's no way they could respond that fast. Also, alarms can be disabled. But now-a-days you can get ones that even if you kill the power and land line; they will use cell phone technology with battery back up to call the response center.

Another thing to consider, which is what I did is install a loud (and I mean LOUD) alarm in your attic. What you do is buy and install motion sensors, which aren't too expensive. Wire those to a loud bell/alarm (think old school fire alarms or that episode of Home Improvement when they install their home alarm system). My alarm is so loud, my entire street can hear it when it goes off. No joke.

No thief is gonna stick around with that thing going off, guaranteed.

you can buy and set up your own cameras. Hook them to a computer and a battery backup and have them go off by motion detection inside and/or on the perimeter of your house. Send an email with a snap shot and you can call the cops from your cell phone. These days, the same phone you got the email on, and report the play by play in realtime.

I highly doubt those headphones are rated to keep out 130dB of noise. But I have a feeling you were joking anyways.

For all the "my pet is my security system" people, A $15 can of pepper spray just rendered your dog useless. Even a 180lb Rotty.

Haha yeah, it'd take a lot more than a piece of meat to make my dog not attack you if you try to enter my home.

If I was burgering a house and the owner threw me a piece of steak, I'd probably stop dead in my tracks. Free steak!

Please tell me you're joking. You think a trained guard dog is going to stand there right by the fence looking up at a guy with pepper spray? No, trained guard dogs wait for someone to enter their area, and then they charge and attack; there's usually no warning. A really well trained guard dog won't even bark. A trained guard dog is not going to stop if someone sprays it with pepper spray. Just like he's not going to stop if someone throws him some food. And when there's a 120lb dog charging at you in the dark, you think you're gonna be able to aim pepper spray to hit directly into his eyes? No, you're going to be running for your life. Or you can try the pepper spray and then when my dog is latched around your throat, we'll see who wins.
