I love a lot Marilyn Manson music, and his was really the only song on the old movie's soundtrack that I recall liking, actually, but I agree with what you're saying. I think most movies are more effective and taken a lot more seriously, if they are timeless and do not rely on popular music. Just give it a good score and make a good film, without the reliance of popular songs.

I don't mind if they didn't rely on popular music. I trust Blumhouse so I'm sure this will be pretty good. Even though I am disappointed if it's true there isn't going to be a violator in it, I'm still going to go watch this.

Todd only mentions Twitch, surely Sam must be in it too? You can't have one without the other.

I was curious about that, too. A couple months ago in a Facebook Live video, McFarlane showed one page of the script and it was a conversation between Sam and Twitch.

I was wondering about that myself. Maybe this movie takes place before Twitch meets Sam. Supposedly Kevin Smith is developing a Sam and Twitch series for BBC America, and maybe this movie sets that up.

Bad cgi and mediocre acting from Michael Jay White aside, I always liked the Spawn movie.

It's a classic and brilliant, and if you don't like it, you suck.

The CGI sequences in Hell with Malebolgia definitely haven't aged well but I've always thought Michael Jai White was good. I still enjoy the film for the most part and don't think it's nearly as bad as others do. But I'm really looking forward to seeing what the new film is like.

I liked the first one for it's look and dark style. It was crazy and I didn't fully get it.

With updated effects and a good script, this could be a pretty awesome movie. I'm in.

He mentioned in an interview he wants Leo to play the role of Twitch. Given Leo has turned down SERVERAL comic book roles in the past I doubt he'd do it. Not to mention given the 10-12 million dollar budget, I can't see Leo taking the pay cut

Usually I cringe at the word reboot but it's needed in this case since it wasn't done right the first time. Aside from Leguizamo giving a scene stealing, career performance, everyone else was wooden and awkward. Even Martin Sheen had trouble with his bad guy role. It just seemed like a film that wasn't sure what it wanted to be and comes off more silly than anything.
I don't know much about Spawn and never read the comics but I always got the impression that he's more serious than the first film and actor allowed him to be. I guess the only problem now could be the over saturation of the superhero genre. He could get buried in the flood of Marvel and DC movies.
I've really enjoyed superhero films over the last few years but I'm getting fatigued by the current endless stream of them. Spawn might be a little too late to the party if he doesn't bring something new.

Given the chances of Valerian 2 happening being slim to none, his schedule is likely open or getting ready to open

I think Jamie Foxx would have been quite a decent pick for Spawn and tbh, he's still in great shape but the budget being that low would mean some serious deal making with a cut of the profits and whatnot to even attract top end talent.

I actually think they should go down the line of a trains actor with a range that extends to what they need but who is on the fringe in terms of audience visibility. Usually the best way is to cast unknowns.

I hope it's not Jaimie Foxx as Spawn. Would love to see Idris Elba in the role.

Shooting begins in February!

Quote:
Todd McFarlane talks Spawn reboot, confirms February start date

Speaking today at New York Comic Con, comic creator and soon-to-be-filmmaker Todd McFarlane opened up about the long in-development Spawn reboot that he’ll be directing. According to Deadline, McFarlane revealed that pre-production on the film will begin just after the Christmas holiday, with cameras set to start rolling in February. McFarlane reiterated that the film will be “dark and R-rated,” even going so far as to say that it would be a harder R than Deadpool.

McFarlane also revealed that the budget for the film will be a meager $10 million, an atypical budget for a superhero film (which range into the hundreds of millions at Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios) but par for the course for Blumhouse Productions (who specialize in lower-budget features anywhere from $100k to $10 million). With such a smaller scale film, the money for which McFarlane himself is at least partially putting up, allows the filmmaker to share more content with fans from the set, which he promises to do every day of production.

“I’m spending my own money,” he said at NYCC. “So who cares if it doesn’t work out. It’s a $10 million budget movie, and (a studio) would just get a 22-year-old punk director. I just want to be the old punk directing it.”

First appearing in 1992’s Spawn #1, the character quickly became the symbol for 1990s comics dark and brutal antiheroes. His Hellspawn powers allow him to teleport, shape shift, and utilize a variety of weapons (notably chains) in combat.

Spawn previously made the leap to the big screen in 1997 with Michael Jai White in the title role and then on television as an HBO animated miniseries, titled Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.

Spawn will not speak in the new reboot

Quote:
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the first SPAWN film, and it looks like 2018 is the year when we’ll finally start seeing some significant progress on its predecessor.

Todd McFarlane recently spoke with AZCentral to discuss his upcoming panel at Ace City Comic-Con with the legendary Stan Lee. McFarlane also spoke on his breakout run on Amazing Spider-Man, Venom, and of course his Image Comics creation SPAWN. When asked about the status of the new film, which McFarlane wrote himself, he offered a quick update: “We just signed off on the script, and are going into budgeting. We're also having our casting meeting.”

As for the tone of the film, McFarlane added, “It will be dark and heavy, serious, R-rated. It won't be a superhero movie. I don't think most people would categorize it as that. It will be a supernatural thriller, like a lot of good creep movies.”

Though he had hinted at it in previous talks about SPAWN, McFarlane confirms that the titular character will remain silent throughout the flick, and drops hints about who the central character will be if not Spawn himself:

I like to explain that it's my Jaws. Spawn doesn't say a word the entire movie, and it's the same way with Jaws. It's about the sheriff and the people, chasing the ghost. That's it...The lead role isn’t Spawn, the lead role is a cop, like Sheriff Brody from Jaws. I think we can hook a fairly significant actor that we want. Unlike a superhero movie, we wouldn't need an actor to put on prosthetic (makeup) or go to the gym. We just need him to act.

As always, we’ll have more on the status of SPAWN as it unfolds. Be sure to check out AZCentral for the rest of the interview.
