I used my $15 off $90 on an order with the Masters of the Universe Revelation steelbook, The Colors Within steelbook and Dexter Original Sin steelbook. I'll probably be camcelling that order though if we get a b2g1 or b1 g1 50% off offer before these come out, which is likely.

Well, statistics report 66% of new vinyl buyers are age 34 and under. That's 2/3 of all recorded sales reported by retailers. So it's not a bunch of old men looking to relive glory days as your colossally ignorant statement implies.

I agree if its an artist I really care about. With vinyl, I do understand there is a higher fidelity than CD, but the crackles take me out of it. Or like Daft Punk albums- they're cool to own on vinyl (I own all of their albums), but as electronic pieces, all of the vinyl artefacts make them kind of "pointless" on vinyl.

Personally I can definitely hear a difference between a Spotify stream and a lossless Apple stream on proper equipment. But I wouldn't notice a 192/24-Bit stream of a Donna Summer album and a standard 44/24 or 48/24 version of one of her albums (I own her 192 stuff and also have 48/24 versions as well). People who use wireless headphones only get bluetooth quality, unless they use the AirPlay feature with compatible ear/headphones. I have Bose Ultras, but iPhones and Macbooks don't support the lossless codec they do. But I go into steaming, vinyl, CDs, and Hi-Res audio knowing that one thing doesn't make it better necessarily.

When it comes to the snobbish vinyl attitude, I do agree with that last part. I'm sure the nostalgia plays a large factor into how others perceive vinyl and those who buy it. I didn't grow up with it (it was generations removed) so I'm not rose tinted about it.

On this I 100% agree with you. I will always buy physical releases as long as they are offered. Having that copy on the shelf gives me a sense of peace. Short of a fire or someone breaking in my home and stealing it, I can count on it being available for years to come. I've heard too many stories of people losing their, paid for, digital content. I don't care how good streaming gets you never truly own it and that is a big problem.

I have a friend who tells me when he loses an album or song off his digital collection that he paid for.-which ticks him off. I always tell him that he should get a physical copy of it instead. He likes the fact that I have all of my movies on physical discs-so he can watch them when he wants!

If your statistics are true then they completely back up my statement. Under 34 are elitist hipsters.

Though I don't have particular reason to believe what you say though since you provide no documentation for what you say. Now that doesn't mean your statement isn't true but so far you have given us no reason to believe you.

And some of what you say is meaningless even if true. Like there are 10 times as many articles extolling vinyl over cds. There are probably 10 times or more articles saying the world is flat than round just because people don't feel the urge to say things that are such basic facts.

CD's are technically a better format.

https://blog.discmakers.com/2023/12/vinyl-vs-cd/

If you as a hipster prefer vinyl that is your choice, but that is all it is: a choice. There is nothing superior about vinyl. CD's are louder, have better soft parts and better bass.

If you think analog is so great, go back to an SD TV with VHS tapes recorded at the highest speed.

Oh, and a lot of vinyl buyers don't listen to them because they don't have a turntable or don't use their turntable.

They are merely cool collectibles.

I think he meant that the attitudes that these hipsters and olds have about NEW collectors and vinyl in general usually have such a high opinion on vinyl due to nostalgia or because its touted as being simply better just because. As in elitism within a collecting community (more on that later).

There's a giant record show done near me every two or three months. There's a good mix of younger and older people there (and in between). But some of the most insufferable booths are usually complaining about vinyl being "cool" again because its trendy to own something collectible, in hand, instead of streaming, and because "everyone" is releasing records now. But then they're also the ones complaining without any prompting, within earshot of potential customers, and with prices that now reflect the "trendy" prices as opposed to the cheap prices from years ago.

Honestly, I think that every niche community (if you can call them "niche") has its fair share of snobs. Film communities have it, the Criterion subreddit is full of it, electronic music communities have it as well, and so do Blu-ray collectors.

I just think this went off topic / the Target deals conversation stemmed from Target jettisoning movies/Blu-rays in favor of vinyl.

Back to the vinyl v CD argument. Better reading than the sales I’m seeing at Target.

To sum up from someone who is buying both:

CD is the best in every way except artwork

Vinyl is for fun and nostalgia for this 68 soon to be 69 year old and who generally buys vinyl priced under $15 (I’ve already raved about the $5 B&N sale now dead)and the artwork is great.

Some soundtrack scores are only being released on vinyl and digital, Prey and The Wild Robot

If I buy vinyl first of a new artist or reissue because I found it cheap and it has non fill, pops, distortion and I love the album I will buy the CD. Phoebe Bridgers Punisher vinyl awful, so bought CD

Digital, Spotify is the most convenient just like video streaming is. Just bought My Best Friend’s Wedding 4K. No Blu-ray just digital. Up at mom’s and no 4K player so I can watch it on MA, Vudu or iTunes. CONVENIENT but I’m still in love with physical.

I don’t worry about losing a digital film either.

Discogs is your friend. Check a review before buying a certain pressing. Phoebe’s Punisher pressings all sound like absolute shit.

I’ve got 400+ records in my collection and none of them pop or skip or crackle.

I meant that vinyl listeners fall primarily into two categories:

1) Elitist hipsters that think they are better because they think vinyl sounds better than what the commoners listen to.

2) Old guys like that 68 year that talks about why he buys vinyl. It is nostalgic and fun. I watch 1970’s shows like Space:1999 or Emergency! sometimes for some of the same reasons.

This is just vinyl listeners. That huge percentage of vinyl buyers that don’t listen to them just do it for the various aspects that people collect anything be it salt and pepper shakers or cars.

Yeah, I read it the first time you wrote it. It is just as dismissive, ignorant and arrogant now as it was then.

Quote:
If your statistics are true then they completely back up my statement. Under 34 are elitist hipsters.
I see you've summed up an entire demographic with no facts to support it, just your word/opinion. I'm sure that limited world view must make your life easier.

Quote:
Though I don't have particular reason to believe what you say though since you provide no documentation for what you say. Now that doesn't mean your statement isn't true but so far you have given us no reason to believe you.
You can look up the statistics for yourself if that's where your doubt is. On the other point, what's required for you to believe if we are talking about someone's preferences?

Quote:
And some of what you say is meaningless even if true. Like there are 10 times as many articles extolling vinyl over cds.
I see where you are going but, if you feel it's all meaningless why are you even engaging in the conversation?

Quote:
There are probably 10 times or more articles saying the world is flat than round just because people don't feel the urge to say things that are such basic facts.
Here's a fact, I can walk into any major retailer and buy vinyl. CDs, other than that small handful tucked under that large display of vinyls at Walmart, not so much.

Quote:
CD's are technically a better format.
I never said CDs were bad. What I said was that I prefer vinyl, but for some reason that makes people react like I stuck a spoon up their ass and started to stir.
I have collected CDs for over 30 years. I love them to this day. One thing to know is a lot of remastered CDs are trash. It's like someone just decided to turn everything to 10 and put it on the disc. Everything is louder but louder doesn't equal better.
However, I do own some very well done remasters. The W.A.S.P Savage Seven release is the most recent example of someone taking the time and care to really bring the albums/songs to a sonic clarity most remasters can't even come close to.

Quote:

You know it's funny how you've been throwing around the word Elitist and then you make that statement which is about as elitist as you can get. You say vinyl is not superior but go on to basically say CDs are.

Quote:

I think vinyl is great. I also enjoy CDs and when I'm in my car I use Amazon Music and Youtube Music.
I like DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K UHD too. You know it is possible for people to enjoy a multitude of similar things across different formats, Right? You know it's also possible for those people to have a preference for one over the other, Right?

Quote:
Oh, and a lot of vinyl buyers don't listen to them because they don't have a turntable or don't use their turntable.

This is true. I've seen this myself at Walmart. Watching two women talk about buying vinyl. One said, "Girl, you don't even have a record player". Then the other woman responded back, "I know and I don't care. I'm still buying it".

But that was two years ago, just like the article you've referenced. What's happening NOW? Vinyl is growing year after year. More record players/turntables have sold. The vinyl trend isn't just happening in the US it's around the world.
