Finally got around to Rocky vs. Drago tonight. I really enjoyed it and think it's a superior cut of the movie. It plays a lot more in tone with Rocky 1 and 2 and a drama whereas the theatrical feels like an action movie.

The added scenes really give the movie more depth. It's crazy how much material Stallone had. It was like watching a brand new movie with all of the scenes, different angles and edits. And who doesn't like a FULL "No Easy Way Out" montage?

I do think he trimmed out some good parts though and he really did a hatchet job to almost everything with Brigitte Nielsen. I always liked the scene of her telling Apollo's wife that she hopes they can be friends after and always though that line was cold so I'm sad to see that gone.

Other than that and a few minor things, I think it will be my go to cut when I'm in the mood for Rocky IV. After skimming through, the video quality is also much better on the RvD cut over the theatrical.

I'm looking forward to the Director's Cut of Rocky Balboa next after I slog through Rocky V,

The RvD cut is a hideous DNR nightmare. Compression issues aside, at least the theatrical cut still resembles film. 2.35:1 also feels out of place when the rest of the franchise is 1.85:1. I would easily trade the RvD cut on the Rocky IV disc for a more competently encoded theatrical cut.

that 2.35:1 decision by Stallone wasn’t one of his better decisions. Funny thing is when he previewed the final cut in his home theater at his previous property he watched it in 1.85:1 so what made him think the rest of us would want to see it in a cropped form.

You get comments about the wedding anniversary and it's been x many years since this or that but it never adds up. Usually caused by most of the sequels immediately following on from the end of the previous movie. Time passes, but it doesn't. Rocky V is the one that was the biggest headscratcher though. When I saw it for the first time and the kid appears, I couldn't believe my eyes haha
It's not just the kid tho, if we take it as read that Rocky IV takes place in the year it was released then where the hell did 1985 go in Rocky V? Edit: hell, where did the '80s go? It's just gloriously goofy all round.

And if that is the case why in the world is the 5.1 audio track for Rocky so anemic? It honestly might be the weakest 5.1 track I have ever heard. Did Rocky just have weak audio and I forgot about it? I mean I had to go to the second audio option which isn't even a full proper recreation of the original mix. But even that sounded miles better.
If the "original" mix on the first Rocky has separation and is not dual mono then it's the faulty disk, but yes the the remix for Rocky has always sucked, almost all remixes of mono tracks do

Considering you got it from a seller off of ebay then it's likely you have the faulty one, at least regarding the 1-4 collection which you never specified which set you acquired

FR. If Rocky 5 is only about a year later, the soundtrack shouldn't have been current-day EDM, it should've still been hair metal/power ballads, lol. The edit I have that added the caption "1 Year Later" Probably should've been 5 instead.

As for where did the 80's go, most people say Grunge killed the music, and Tarentino killed the action movies (funny dialogue without gratuitous violence). I actually think Terminator 2 killed it since it was an action movie that was made seriously and could be taken seriously. Given it was the highest grossing film of the year (and possibly of all time back then) it only stands to reason that Hollywood would shift away from the formula that was already tired by that point to begin with. Funny thing is that Van damme and Seagal soldiered on for a few more years while Stallone and Schwarzenegger were barely hanging on by a thread (Last Action Hero was Arnie's first bomb, and Sly would join him with Judge Dredd a few years later).

Funny thing is when I watch seasons 4 & 5 of Miami Vice, I can tell that whatever people associate as "The 80's" was already on its way out. Had the show continued, it would've probably just been like other copycats during the early 90's ("Silk Stalkings" comes to mind).

I've decided to write a novel called Rocky IV.II that will explain away the continuity of Robert's age. In my novel, when Rocky returns from Russia, as seen in Rocky V, he is actually returning from the REMATCH fight with Drago. In my novel, Rocky comes home, is invited to the White House, and given a medal for bringing an end to the cold war.

5 years later, things go bad when Adrienne is kidnapped by Drago's russian henchmen. They hold her hostage in Russia and demand Rocky come back for a rematch. With no time to prepare, Rocky tells Paulie to ask his accountant for a tax extension and takes off for Russia. 3 training montages later, Rocky is ready for the fight, which ends of course with Rocky winning by knock out in the last round. Adrienne is returned to Rocky and they celebrate in the middle of the ring with all of Russia chanting, "Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!" Drago is carried off and thrown into a nearby ally, where Ludmilla tells him she is pregnant and wants a divorce. Adrienne says, "Let's go home" and Rocky replies, "First, I need a shower, Mick." Adrienne looks concerned but smiles anyway. The end.

Or is it?

Just watched Rocky 2 and I thought the 4K transfer was quite good. Especially the outside shots and the fight scenes as well. Of course there was plenty of grain to go around. The DTS HD MA 5.1 track has no issues, and sounds great.

Yeah it wasn't a philosophical rumination, I was still saying that re: Rocky V

The crop is by far what pisses me off the most with the 2021 recut. It's so cramped, it looks horrible in several places. Some of it looks good, but not enough. I think the tighter framing does fit the movie in terms of tone and style, but the captured footage does not work being cropped down to that extent. A 2:1 aspect ratio like Jurassic World would have been much, much better; Tighter than the Theatrical Cut, but it wouldn't look stupid as a lot of moments in the final version look.

In all honesty it didn't bovver me. I'm normally one to b!tch up a storm about AR changes but, as with the (tasteful) DNR, the fact that there's a 1.85 version provided (albeit of the theatrical cut) makes me feel a bit less antagonistic towards those choices. And that's the crux of it really, just give us the choice of new cuts or old, new audio or old, and my god the traffic on this forum would halve overnight. It wouldn't disappear completely as long as studios (and indies that rhyme with Dino) are still pumping out godawful encodes, but it'd be a start.

Deye-know... die-naw... Dih-nuh... man, this is hard.

What about Fill Beak or Lucio Pannal? (I guess that last one might fall under the "studio" umbrella )

Interesting. I thought that had the same problems as Rock V Drago and I much prefer the theatrical version.

Mine came from Gruv but Rocky III disc is all scratched up and other discs have a few scratches, no idea why. I don't think it's a return because it came 2 days after the release day. But I'm pissed because I'm not planning to watch these until November and I guess I'll have no idea if some of these won't play until then. I may have to end up renting a stream if Rocky 3 or another one freezes, uggh.
