I don't like this film (MM 3). What I was seeing in the trailers, making-of documentary and music video at the time, only confirmed to me, that I wouldn't like this film's tone or direction. After the first two, this one reeked of Hollywood. Far too many kids in this - and too much time is spent on them.
When I saw it in 1986, when first released on videotape...I hated it. I still don't like this film. I wish this film was never made. MM 2 ended on the perfect note - it should have been left at that. |

I'm hoping they release the High Octane Collection in the UK soon, as although I'm tempted to Import it, it will be pricey to do so. Can't understand why they haven't. Would really like to see the Road Wars Doc.

I love all of the Mad Max movies very much. Fury Road is the pinnacle of everything Mad Max to me and the kind of movie I think Miller would have made back in the day if he'd had the tech and money but really they're all fantastic movies. It would be too difficult to rate them but I guess Fury Road is my favourite movie very closely followed by 2 and 3 with the first movie in last place. I still love the first movie though, it's just not 'apocalyptic enough' IMO. It felt like Miller was testing the water with it before he found his groove with the second movie.

I quite like Tina Turner in Thunderdome and that entire movie is so enjoyable. The only one I have problems with is the original Mad Max which has such a weird tone and takes an eternity to get going as a revenge movie. Also told us nothing about Max other than he goes to jazz clubs.

Agree - I had never seen the original Max until recently when I got the MGM Blu. I loved it. But, then, what, as a viewer, does one want/expect? Fury Road? Road Warrior? Maybe, have patience, and let the movie do its thing and take you on a journey. I loved it - the setting, the locations, the slow buildup, the implicit decaying of society (e.g., the decayed police station, etc.), the odd characters. No story (in reference to some earlier posts)? Subjective. What I just described is enough of a skeleton of a story for me, then the "how" it's about, rather than "what", is more interesting to me, and I can argue the many virtues of the "how" Mad Max is about.

![]() I love TT in Thunderdome, what her performance lacks in polish she makes up for with oodles of charisma and the kind of scenery-chewing excess that's common to a lot of Max's villains. The movie itself does feel like it's held back a little because of stuff like the PG-13 rating and Miller's heart not being truly in it after the death of Byron Kennedy, but I still marvel at the world which was created. The first one is still a kick-ass little Ozploitation flick. People always give it shit (especially those who are first exposed to it after the later movies) for not being apocalyptic enough but as was said above it's the beginning of the end, the final breakdown of law and order in society being played out in microcosm as Max fights The Toecutter and his goons. |

I like the original a lot as an origin story, the police outfits look bad ass, and it has a kickass poster. But if they never made the rest of the movies I probably wouldn't take a second look at it.
Also I wouldn't know how to recommend that movie to someone today. A revenge flick... but not until the last 10 minutes. An action movie, well there's some action but mostly just bikers roaming around terrorizing people. Post apocalyptic... but that's so far in the background that it might as well just be set in a lowly populated area. |

Fury Road is everything I wanted from a MM sequel decades later. It's the movie I've dreamed of seeing for years. So glad it turned out the way it did. Now we just need another! Which probably won't happen unfortunately.
