Considering most people seem to die from the light as smokey did I am not so sure they were protecting the light but more from people turning into smokeys or something similar. Although it seems that those blessed such as Jacob/Jack can enter .. and apparently smokey can as well. Not sure why smokey assumed he could not uncork the island since Jack could re-cork it. I mean he really had no idea what was even down there himself. I also wonder why did Smokey not leave the island once Jacob died? Jack was obviously not keeping him there since he left Jack alive while heading towards the boat.

oh and another question. not sure if it was explained. but the whole time jacob says "i need you guys to protect the light from MiB, you have to keep him from finding it" but when MiB jack and crew were trecking towards it, he seemed to have a pretty good idea of where it was. i was thinking how did he find it so easy if jack was supposed to stop him from finding it.

Regarding why there was a need to prevent MIB from leaving the island when he was a boy...this is quite a konundrum when you think about it. Would MIB had been evil if the truth about his Mother had not come out...add to that if his Mother had not killed his camp later would he have turned evil, which in turn led to him killing Mother. His Mother was the real killer and placed him in a series of events turning him into a killer. Jacob by default becomes the "good guy" and sets his own rules by not allowing MIB to leave the island. Thus setting into motion the eternal battle of wits between the feuding foes and this chapter of the "Lost" journey.
It's kind of like Friday the 13th...the mother is the real killer, not the son. She was the force that put all this in motion. Or even how the death of Anakin Skywalker's mother set him on a path to the dark side and so on... Doesn't all this thinking make one's head hurt...Ahhh ![]() |

My theory..
The "light" was keeping the island in place/ from falling apart. The Island prevents hell from getting out and spreading like a cork in a bottle. Jacobs and MIB's fake mom told Jacob not to go down into the light. When Jacob threw MIB down there, hell turned him into the evil smoke monster or a part of hell was released. If MIB was successful in getting off the island, then a part of hell/evil would be released into the world. |

To me, this was part of the shows ending. Whats important is the journey, which ultimately has one final ending. Everything that happens during that journey is just progress. Progress in reaching the final destination, or end of the journey.

Loved the finale for what it DID give. Just by that, I think it was flippin epic... BUT THEY LEFT TO MANY QUESTIONS! Like that other quote said, the island WAS NOT JUS A BACKDROP FOR A CHARACTER PIECE! The island did not need to be so heavily independent of the characters for it to have so little explanation... Now some other questions I would have liked to have had answered... In "pergatory" where "love" seemed to be the key point in helping them remember their real lives, why was Faraday not ready? I understand why the mother didn't want him to go, but he should have known. He remembered detonating the hydro bomb, and he felt that love connection to charlotte. that's about as much as everyone else had WHO FUNDED THE DHARMA INITIATIVE!!! whether wiped out or not, someone did, and Ben would always talk about his "vast resources" off the island (which he obviously had, once off the island, after the donkey wheel) Why women couldn't have babies. that was a huge question since the second season if I'm not mistaken! and why was Walt so "special." And yes, the writers obviously wanted to go somewhere with that but didn't. Although, I always did think the big deal everyone made about Aaron was really reaching |

Ultimately... LOST was an incredible experience. It's finale was masterfully crafted. As silly as this may read, I'm happy to have been a part of it's viewership. You hear about great shows from the past generations, be we can claim this one. I've never experienced a show quite like this. Very thankful.
