I'll certainly keep watching the gorgeous uhd, but I'm hanging on to my original Blu.
I've watched this 4K movie the other day, and I couldn't see anything wrong with it. As a matter of fact, it looked good. I'm one of the rare viewers who watch movies for the entertainment, not to decipher, inspect, and examine every little possible defect in the image under a microscopic eye, scene for scene because I'm not quality control. I don't work for the studio's manufacturing, and that's not what I get paid to do! I only buy movies to watch and enjoy as a hobby, not a chore.

I want to say there was a BD release with this same framing, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I almost let the framing issue stop me from purchasing the disc, but the rest of the transfer was great, so I caved. No regrets about buying it, but the framing issue still leaves me baffled.
Yes, the newer cinema series Blu-ray that came out in 2015 also has the changed aspect. The original 2007 one has the original aspect.

No, it called: I don't get paid to do somebody else's job, so therefore I don't worry about it.

The caps are selectively chosen to highlight the "problem." In motion the 4k remaster looks just fine, framing wise. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Top 10 disc for me. The UHD breathes new life into all the wonderful studio sets and costumes, and the immersive mix is one of the best. This is the disc that got me to fully commit to the format.

But why reframing in the first place? Whatever happened to respecting director's intents?

Well, no, nor should there be.

There is however the expected boost 4K HDR brings. If you can't see that then you must be commenting purely on the caps.

Utter nonsense. Large difference in detail, color and of course HDR.

I would call this kind of framing discrepancy quite substantial at times. Clearly they zoomed in a healthy amount. Somes frames quite honestly speak for themselves. The only issue in my mind, is why the hell they did it in the first place. I included some matching frames:

[Show spoiler]Note: The Supreme Cinema Series Blu has the same framing as the 4K uhd.

I try to be a purist as much as I can, as many of us here do - but once I screened the 4K there is no way I'd go back to watching the 2007 blu-ray for a few zoomed in frames that I didn't even notice while watching the movie. The quality upgrade is too large to ignore, at least on my t.v.

In a perfect world yes this issue wouldn't exist, but in reality it does and the color and contrast boost the HDR provides outweighs the perfect framing -- FOR ME -- I can see how it would bother others, especially fans who have screened the movie many times over (for example I would notice a framing discrepancy in JAWS and that would drive me nuts so I understand)

So for fans who don't have this movie burned into their minds, the 4K is a most definite upgrade, especially vs the 2007 blu.

I've let go of my OCD when it comes to things like this, and I'm finding I'm actually enjoying my movie library more - it's not ignorance, it's when faced with a tough decision which aspects of the film have more weight for you personally (perfect framing vs upgraded picture quality) - and it can change per movie. (Also I don't feel the need to own 50 different copies of Evil Dead anymore )

Yeah, I never upgraded to the 2015 BD due to the framing issue (which I definitely think IS an issue, considering some of the symmetrically composed shots now look totally off center), but I just couldn’t say no to a Sony 4K disc of one of my all-time favorite movies. The huge PQ upgrade trumps the framing problem, IMO.

I'm usually picky about this stuff (owned every version since the Criterion Laserdisc) but here I don't mind the framing, in fact I barely notice.

I don't even think your chosen frames show anything bad, let alone the movie in motion.
