Very true but I also think it's because though they managed to recapture that magic, the huge amounts of CGI (yes LOTR had plenty too), shooting digitally, along with the tone just generally (because of the story obviously) being different from LOTR are all reasons why it's just not on the same level as the LOTR trilogy.

And prequels usually have a bad name, you see it with a ton of stuff, there's this cynicism as you say. A lot of people think of prequels as lesser (which probably stemmed from Lucas' Star Wars PT) and look down on them and it's really hard to find that feeling of the original stuff again.

I think many just can't get past the 3 movie thing, ignoring the fact that The Hobbit trilogy is more of a further exploration of Middle Earth as well as telling The Hobbit story.

I mean I’m no fan of the Hobbit trilogy but I think it’s unanimously agreed that they’re far better than the Star Wars prequels. It’s not even close.

There’s no denying that between 2003 and 2012, the world just became a more cynical place (especially when it comes to “nerdy” things).

I dunno, it just really bothers me to see people whining about stuff from the Hobbit movies and then turn around and be like “yassss Lord of the Rings I love this from my childhood” when there are really a LOT of liberties taken from the source material.

It’s that whole “old thing good new thing bad” mentality that drives me crazy. My favorite example of this is one time, a friend of mine and I were watching Fear the Walking Dead. Something dumb and ridiculous happened and my friend was like “what the hell! That was so stupid and made no sense” and I said “yeah but.. what about [dumb thing] that happened on the regular Walking Dead?” and he legit said “well.. the original show is allowed to get away with stuff like that. It’s older and has earned it” like.. seriously, dude?
(I prefer the Hobbit Trilogy as a whole over the Rings Trilogy.....)

It is amaizing what jackson was able to do since he never wantedor intended to make them... They do feel bit rushed and way too digital.

If they came out after lotr, im sure jackson would have been on board from the beginning and would have had his time to plan, prepare and write better story.

Also if they came around king kong they would have used way more miniatures and sets and overall feeling would have been way more lotr style imo

Sure, but the story of a hobbit and group of dwarves trying to steal gold from a dragon maybe doesn't make for the best foundation of a further exploration of Middle-earth. The bones of the story of The Hobbit are at odds with the Lord of the Rings prequel WB craved.

rexcrk thinks if The Hobbit came out first, we'd be looking at a beloved 6-film cycle. I think if The Hobbit had been released first (in its form as currently presented), audiences would have had even less patience for White Councils, Ringwraith tombs, and the inner-workings of Laketown politics.

Well I disagree as I love The Hobbit movies. The only thing I'd change is way less Alfrid.

Talk about 'prima Donna'. You seem of such higher breeding with your angelic attitude.

He absolutely was not the right choice and it was the best decision to replace him, it should have happened within days of him arriving in New Zealand though and he should have been paid for the 2 months of rehearsal and training he took part in.

I'll never forget when Return of the King swept the board at the Academy Awards, poor Stuart Townsend is sat in the front row with one of the best seats in the house.

It's what he says. I've been reading that his behavior on set was no bueno, trying to get confirmation of any kind. Just seems like one of those things where there has to be more than just "he's too young". Though, Eric Stoltz shot quite a bit on BTTF.

Whatever it was, it was clearly the right decision to get rid of him. I don't believe anyone could have played Aragorn as perfectly as Viggo.

It was absolutely the correct decision. No argument from me. Viggo was perfect in the role.

To whom it may concern, whether for yourself or your buyers:

For redeeming the digital code, use MA redeem only right now!!! The Vudu redeem is redeeming HD. This may change at some point, but as usual, Vudu is not redeeming a bundle the proper way during release week (or weeks as it sometimes turns out to be).

Interesting, I didn't know any of that....I've always been interested in some of the behind the scenes stuff. We as the audience see the end result, but so often it seems things could have been a lot different.
