Jump scares can be effective when done well (The Evil Dead, anyone?). The problem is that they're overused in a lot of modern horror films. That and the general public too often gauge a horror film's quality by how many jump scares it has. Sometimes I'll have customers buying tickets to a horror flick and they'll ask if it's jumpy. Lolwut?

Anyway, back to being MEGA-HYPED. Something I feel has been missing from mainstream horror is a real sense of menace, and the trailer's got it. I lurrrrrrrve that shot with the kids cowering in the background while Pennywise's hand/claw moves in on them.

I definitely have more hope for this than dark tower. At very least this is cast right lol

Jump scares are really only bad to me when they're false. A monster popping out from the darkness and either killing are attacking a protagonist? That's fine with me. The dumb friend grabbing someone's shoulder with a loud noise? Annoying.

We don't speak about that here.

But srsly, I know I should reserve judgement until the film comes out, etc etc, but that film's got disaster written all over it. I'd love to be wrong, but between the casting choices, the huge changes to the source material, and Sony's reluctance to actually promote it, I'm not filled with confidence.

Oh yeah, fake jump scares are the worst. Unfortunately it seems that every horror film from the late 90s/early 00s was full of them.

Those are required to make the actual jump scare effective. The issue is they are handled by people who don't know how to balance it out. They think the film needs 6 fake outs before the actual scare happens for it to be effective, they were wrong.

The only time I liked a jumpscare was this one:

[Show spoiler]

They're overdone, to the point that they're lame in horror and better in comedy.

Jump scares are all or nothing for me.

Either they're completely lame (and therefore inefficient), or they nearly give me a heart attack.

Needless to say, a film that is mostly reliant on jump scares has little to no replay factor.

If people thought this trailer had too many jump scares, watch the Annabelle 2 trailer. I watched it on my iphone and I said holy shit because how loud the jump scares were.

I like jump scares when the actors themselves really jumped because they didn't even know it was coming. For example, Lt. Saavik in Star Trek II when Kirk breaks the glass or Ripley in Aliens when someone knocks something over in the lab. I'm sure there's several more I'm forgetting but those scenes work for me.

Uh, no, the person above said all great horror movies had jump scares and that's not necessarily true. Doesn't mean a movie is bad for having jump scares either.
One of my favorite films, Carrie, has the biggest jump scare of all time.

But horror films that rely only on that are pretty damn annoying and not scary IMO.

Honestly, the "jump scare" of Pennywise appearing in front of Georgie looks so manufactured by trailer editors. It looked like he just popped up, not in a jump scare way, but in a creepy slow way.

I've been caught off guard in movies several times over the years, not even horror movies. Can't really think of anything off the top of my head, but not too long ago I was watching a mild drama and bam! outta nowhere. lol I even laughed at myself because why the heck was that even in the scene.

One I really remember getting me was when I saw The Dark Knight in IMAX and that hung Batman copycat slammed against the Mayor's window view.

Yeah jump scares get a bad wrap for some reason. I can understand if it's out of nowhere it can come off as cheap but pretty much most of the time there's always a suspenseful build up to it (as long as it's done well) so it's just a matter of wondering when the scare is going to come up.

If its not predictable and cheap, then jump scares are fine. I hate waiting for a jump scare to happen especially if it happens to be a cheap one.
