Yeah, with the layout of the room it was the only real option. Down the road when I'm able to have a dedicated room instead of my living room I will set them up differently. But for now it will do.

Is that a contour pillow you are using???

Looks like it anyway. This is why I love the DIY threads.

Actually, yes! lol I went to Walmart and Michaels yesterday. Would you believe I couldn't find just straight polyfill? My last riser I used sheets of polyfill. This time I found a pillow stuffed with polyfill, so I just stuffed the pillow in there! DIY projects...gotta love 'em

Oh it is polyfill in the pillow. I thought it looked like a memory foam one, that is why I was .
Ya, using polyfill pillows is quite common and actually cheaper then just the polyfill alone. My sub build will be employing the fabulous walmart $2.99 deep pocket pillows inside the box.

Congrats on the successful riser build.

Yeah it does look like that because of the design, and they had several different types. I chose one that said it contained polyfill. It was $6.99.

And thanks. They're always fun projects!

Those look badass man. I need to get crackin on this and make my own. I'm going to get this table from Ikea, hopefully this week. I'll cut some pieces from an old memory foam mattress topper and stack them underneath, put a piece of black carpet on top and then wrap the table with some black fabric

Ok, I'm thinking about tackling a project to build a riser for my MFW-15, but I have a few questions first.

1: My MFW-15 doesn't have any feet on it whatsoever. Right now it's sitting down directly on my carpeted floor. Is it alright for it to sit directly on the riser or is it beneficial to have some kind of feet on the sub?

2: Is there any special kind of carpet that should be used? I have some leftover carpet from when my house was built that would be more than enough. Is that Ok to use? I think it would be kind of cool for it to match the floor it will be sitting on, plus it's something I wouldn't have to buy.

3: Does the riser need to be closed on the bottom? Judging from the pics I'm seeing of some of the designs throughout this thread I'm guessing the answer to this is no, but I just want to make sure first.

4: I see above someone mentioned simply stuffing a pillow inside a riser as the foam? Is this as good as any other kind of foam?

5: My initial idea is to build the riser so that my sub will overhang it very slightly, say less than 1/4" on each side. With the carpet on this probably won't even be noticeable. Is this alright, or should it be larger than the sub? If so, why?

Thanks to anyone who can help steer me in the right direction here.

If you can add legs, it will add some add'l help, as you are further seperating and isolating the sub.

Not really, but the softer and thicker it is, I would assume would help to further absorb the low frequencies instead of reflecting them.

3: Does the riser need to be closed on the bottom? Judging from the pics I'm seeing of some of the designs throughout this thread I'm guessing the answer to this is no, but I just want to make sure first.

Again, I think this is a matter of preference and more to do with aesthetics if you ask me.

4: I see above someone mentioned simply stuffing a pillow inside a riser as the foam? Is this as good as any other kind of foam?

Big Daddy suggests poly-fill from within pillows to stuff in a sub, but as far as a riser, I don't think it matters. I would tend to believe that any kind of foam would help, as long as the area is not over-stuffed.

5: My initial idea is to build the riser so that my sub will overhang it very slightly, say less than 1/4" on each side. With the carpet on this probably won't even be noticeable. Is this alright, or should it be larger than the sub? If so, why?

I would make it a bit wider, but that is more for added stability than anything to do with aesthetics or performance. I would think you would want the riser a small bit wider than the sub itself.

Thanks to anyone who can help steer me in the right direction here.
I hope some of the info above helps fireman!

Thanks for the response forsberg. I got to thinking about it and I think I'm going to take this approach rather than buying a GRAMMA. My dad has all the tools I'll need to use for it that I don't already have, and it'll be simple to build and I think even a little cheaper than the GRAMMA. I'm also thinking about getting my sub up a bit higher than a GRAMMA would which apparently won't hurt either.

Check out one of my galleries, I have pics of when I built the riser for my cylinder sub.....I got everything at Lowes. Definitely look into the leg mounts and legs, it makes it soooo easy to build them.

That turned out really well. I've seen pics of it in your other gallery but I never looked through the building phase pics of it. That was a great idea using a round cutting board. That probably saved you some trouble.

I have an idea for what I want to do in my head, and it's very simple. I'm just going to cut four pieces of 2x6 or 2x8 to length and screw them together into a rectangular frame and then screw a piece of 3/4" MDF or plywood on top of it that will overhang 1" on all sides. Then I'm going to cover the entire thing in carpet, put some kind of feet on it and fill it in with foam. I'm not sure yet on using polyfill or some kind of solid foam that I would have to glue in in layers. It'll probably have to be something solid so I can glue it in in layers since I'm planning to leave the bottom open. I'll have to buy the MDF/plywood, 1 board, 4 feet, screws, foam, and adhesive for the carpet. I won't have to paint anything.
