+1 Don't want no colorized junk, I remember when a company called Goodtimes had Laurel and Hardees "March of the Wooden Soldiers" on a colorized DVD back in the day, yuck! I love good Techincolor restoratons,Robin Hood(1938) and the upcoming WOZ and GWTW reissues come to mind!

I bought colorized versions of Ray Harryhausen films on Blu-ray and I would buy colorized version of Casablanca on Blu-ray as long as it was included as an extra in addition to the original B&W version.

I just don't get it!!

They had color then. But they shot it in B&W. We're all so fussy about the BARS . . . and the Directors wishes . . .(2.40:1, 1.78:1) why would anyone want to see this thing in any other way then it was meant to be seen?

Is it a new ride at an amusement park? Or something? that might be fun to try? The orig. experience was conceived as a B&W flick.

What am I? A purist?

xradman: Would you watch Indiana Jones-Skull if it were in B&W... just to see the different textures..
prob. not . .

Erm, in regards to the "director's wishes" for the picture... three-strip was around, sure, but it was expensive, and the cameras were sparse, I believe. It was reserved for "special" films, or films that would show off the colour palette best. If memory serves, Casablanca was never conceived as anything more than standard studio output.

What I can tell you for sure is that when Michael Curtiz was given the project, he didn't sit down and decide that he would do it in B&W. It would have been Wallis' or Warner's call, I'm guessing, but not informed by any sort of "artistic decision".

That being said... hell no. And it's not a case of "well, if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it." Colourised versions of film should just. Not. Exist. At all. It's tantamount to rubbish like altered aspect ratio, or 100hz TVs, or whatever other manipulative hoodoo people demand these days. And it's not just an age thing... I'm 20 and I'm horrified by this kind of tripe.

You are advocating for an increased cost for the package, wow, that makes no sense.

A colorized version won't come free but I do hope they don't add to the package.

Let me ask you a question. Would you boycott Casablanca if the only way to get it was to get a version with both B&W and colorized included (like the Ray Harryhausen Blu-rays from Sony)? I'm not advocating colorizing B&W films, but I really don't see the harm if it's included as an extra feature.

It was NOT shot in COLOR and they could have shot it in color film. It was around. The film was meant to be shown and shot in Black and White. Furthermore I don't want a Black and White version of Vertigo either. It goes both ways.

This is a ignorant topic and those who would like a colorized version of Casablanca need to take a serious film class, and or be stripped of their DVD/BD collections and forced to watch pan/scanned presentations HAHA.

judging by all the responses here, I take it that no
one will support the idea of remastering Casablanca
in 3D when such technology is available?

Why buy a "colorized" version of a B&W movie? Would you buy a "colorized" version Schindler's List or Sin City?

Let people watch it how they want to watch it. Who cares if they release two versions and one is in color? Nobody is forced to watch it. Seriously, some people really get net emotional over the dumbest stuff. LOL!

I agree, but I would not be happy if they were crammed onto a single disc and having both ended up hurting the video quality.

Some of you dudes are a little insane about this stuff.

As long as it's optional, it shouldn't bother any of you. Think of it the same way you might an "unrated" cut of the film. Not necessarily what the director would have wanted, but people do want to see it and it's worth including as an option for those people.

I'm against it if it's forced, but if they can have both versions on disc without sacrificing quality for it, I'm in favor of including it.

Ideally, it is, but in reality it is not. So many "unrated" cuts, so many "extended editions", so many DNR, EE, etc. Luckily the extended cuts are usually optional, but DNR and EE never is.

The only slight against artistic vision that Blu-ray has yet to really fall to is aspect ratio. Blu-ray remains MOSTLY steadfast in its preservation of proper aspect ratio.

Does The Mist cost more for including both a color and B&W version?

I think you missed the part where someone above pointed out that color was WAY too expensive to just be used on everything at the time.

For example, there's buzz about with 3D lately. Some older films may be converted to 3D. There is talks of Titanic being converted to 3D. Would you really say "no, it shouldn't be converted because if it was supposed to be 3D they would have shot in 3D"? Clearly, they "could" have shot it in 3D in the first place, but it was impractical at the time, both for production and for distribution/exhibition. And actually, I'm sure that Cameron, if he could have realistically done it, would have shot in 3D at the time.

Sin City and Schindler's List aren't even B&W. They're stylized but still make deliberate use of color. Also: the counter example of The Mist. No one seems bothered at all that both versions are available for viewers.

A dual layer BD could probably fit a movie like Casablanca 4 times over without the picture or audio suffering.

I will absolutely agree with you. Like I said, nobody is forced to watch it so that problem can be dealt with. However, cramming too much stuff on one disc is something we can't fix. So hopefully, if they did release both, they'd release either two separate versions or a 2 disc set with both.

Exclamation !!

The only way I would buy Casablanca is if Michael Bay Remastered it himself. Remastered with more tanks and explosions, and explosions with planes flying out of them. Must be in COLOR, and 3D.

There will never be a coloroized version of Casablanca released on BD or DVD for that matter. This isn't 1988, people should have a better sense of film history and embrace the original film negative in black and white.

Casablanca was not lit for color photography, it was lit with the intention of black and white shooting. Technically it wouldn't be the same, and shouldn't, esp for the nitrate film stock used back in the 1940's.

I had to deal with this ignorance when DVD first came about and people wanted full screen pan/scanned versions of films, again because of ignorance.

If you can't watch it the way it was shot, then do NOT watch it. The film was not made for you.

To those that are raising a stink about this topic:

Would you refuse or never buy the Ray Harryhausen Blu-rays already released by Sony (20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs. Flying Saucers, It Came From Beneath the Sea), because it contains a colorized version of the movie in addition to the original B&W?

Are these releases somehow inferior or less desirable because they contain colorized versions in addition to the restored B&W version?

Will these have sold more if they released as B&W only?
