Posted this in the relevant US & AUS threads, but also think it's relevant here for those looking to upgrade, or for a region B compatible alternative to the UK release.
Here's some comparisons (all captured via PotPlayer) of the US Shout Factory release (region A locked) vs AUS Ultimate Edition (region ABC), slight colour grading difference but comparable encode quality; http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/1634 ![]() ![]() ____________ EDIT: In the US thread oddbox83 asked if differences could be attributed to the capture method. I'll post my reply here; Both captured via PotPlayer (via it's 'source frame' png capture), on same PC on same day. I use PotPlayer specifically as it seems to match up well with blu-ray.com captures and those at caps-a-holic. Whereas in the past I realised VLC seems to add a bit of a red colour shift to the image. EDIT2: Here are some quick screens via VLC & MPC (MediaPlayer Classic) to show how variable screenshots between different capture methods can be. But you can see between all 3 capture methods, the colour shift is consistent between releases. VLC [Show spoiler] MPC [Show spoiler] ___________ EDIT3: This should better illustrate my point about screenshot variance, here's a blu-ray.com screen vs Potplayer, MPC & VLC. Not sure what VLC is doing, but basically makes it useless as a source for comparisons. blu-ray.com [Show spoiler] PotPlayer [Show spoiler] MPC [Show spoiler] VLC [Show spoiler]

With Arrow revisiting some of their earlier work with new 4K scans and deluxe limited editions, and especially given the recent proper attention finally given to NotLD and the upcoming UHD of Dawn from Second Sight... I'm kind of curious how likely it is that Arrow may go back and give Day another go?
The original release certainly isn't up to their current standards, nor is any other region's release really a good companion for Criterion's NotLD or Second Sight's upcoming release of Dawn. |

VLC decodes everything in Rec.601, even Blu-ray content which is always encoded in the Rec.709 color space. So therefore the colors are always wrong in VLC.
There's one trick that can be used to get around the Rec.601 color space problem in VLC (use opengl renderer, print screen, paste in image editor), but even then there are still problems. Objects in red are shifted by a few pixels. I use this method only to take screenshots of Blu-ray menus. I prefer to take screenshots with DGAVCIndex and VirtualDub2 (decode format set to Rec.709, 16-235, 4:2:0 YCbCr (NV12)). Hard-telecined content via VirtualDub2 + an Avisynth script. |

I simply cannot believe that anything could be worse than Day of the Dead Contagium. I nearly gave up watching films and considered becoming a monk (and I'm an athiest) after defiling my senses with that effigy of wank. I would sooner watch a video of Richard Rubinstein getting a hummer that view that again. I'm not in favour of the death penalty so I'd settle for anyone involved with that movie being sent to a gulag.

It never ceases to amaze me that folks think "Plane 9 From Outer Space" is the Worst... Movie... EVER in a world where "Day of the Dead: Contagium"exists. |
