If anything it has had the effect of turning consumer thought from a strictly HD DVD mindset this week.

Regardless of the final tally the PR has been priceless.

I went to one of the busiest Best Buy in the Miami area and most of the Blu-rays in the BOGO offer were gone (I check store availability online and it was the same for 4 other stores in the area). Of the Blu-rays priced at $14.99 they only had copies of Immortal Beloved.

There is way too much emphasis on Transformers for HD-DVD!!! Sure it sell well....for an HD-DVD title!!! Its not gonna have that much of an impact in the overall scheme of things, plus its only 1 title, unless it sells millions of standalone HD players than it wont have any legs. I'd be surprised if HD-DVD even wins this weeks due to the BOGO sales for BLU. All the BB,CC, TARGET AND FRY'S that I went to were pretty picked clean of Blu's. I was at a major CC and BB today, and no one was picking up HD Transformers just the SD. So, relax on the Transformers thread people, I know alot of people here like the movie but it doesn;t mean that its gonna sell like crazy just because the forum thinks so. Remember, early adopters tend to be movie buffs or technology buffs and not joe smoe. Besides, HD owners number far fewer than Blu-ray owners and with the numbers of catalog titles flying off store shelves and online thats gotta have a huge impact for this weeks numbers.

Hate to say it, but told ya so. Transformers is a huge title no matter which way you look at it and it appears to have done better than even I was thinking. Of course it would have done even better on Blu-ray, hell it could have beeen the first title to sell 500,000 the first week. But I have to admit, all of the enthusiasm on this forum really got me considering that we might actually win the week so the fans of Blu-ray are definitely there.

Spidey 3 should be able to pull those numbers as well, but we do have a factor working against us, at least for the Neilson numbers. Spidey 3 comes in 3 different forms, a trilogy pack, by itself, and bundled free. All those will break up the numbers.

As much as I would love to continue thinking that the BOGO will keep Blu about the 50% line, it just isn't going to happen with 190k sales of a single title. I'm sorry, but you are just fooling yourself to think otherwise. We are all fans of Blu-ray here, but sometimes we need to reel back the fanboy enthusiasm and get back to reality. That was the reason I started this thread in the first place. And this isn't a knock against Blu-ray. Transformers was always going to be a huge title, some here have just been trying really hard to make it seem otherwise.

We won't know those numbers until Friday. The only numbers we have so far are what Paramount gave us, the 190k after 7 days, twice what 300 did on HD DVD the first week.

just focus on the long haul, Hddvd is dead this quarter, while they have transformers and shrek 3, bluray has meet the robinsons, spiderman 3, ratatouille, the die hard collection and pirates of the carribean 3 , a blockbuster movie for every genre coming out week after week exclusively...

All 190k won't be reported on Nielson, maybe only 70%.

I wouldn't rule out the BOGO and residual sales from Fantastic Four etc. notching up well over 100k, maybe even 200k+.

I personally bought 6 titles from Amazon.com, I've never bought any from a Nieslon reporting store before, and I'm certainly not alone.

We're enthusuasts on here, we'll but more than the average PS3/Blu-ray owner, but I really don't think we can dismiss stores being wiped out of Blu-ray BOGO titles across the country and Blu-ray pummeling HD-DVD on Amazon for a full week.

HD-DVD will blow this horn as long and as loud as they can. If they win the week, then really prepare for the choir to start singing!

all in all im not worried...its a great title and good for them. However most people that picked up TF last tues...(in my store) were neutral. I asked a lot of people questions about whether or not they had an HD-DVD player or not and more than half that did had a blu-ray player as well.

Side note there were more people that were disappointed that it was on blu-ray. I got those questions all day.

I am predicting a normal week for us meaning Blu-ray wins. The BOGO was amazing. Not only did I buy 5 (or was it 6), my buddy who supports HD DVD (primarily) purchased 10 titles. And then he called two of his HD DVD buddies and they each purchased 10 titles (all 3 guys purchased the same batch of movies). I think they see the writing on the wall for HD DUD. Oh, they each purchased Transformers too.

I think for this week's numbers I will just hope for the best, but expect the worst... that way I won't be too bummed if HD-DVD takes this week.

ONE TITTLE WONT WIN THE WAR BUT THIS NEWS OF 190,000 IS CRAZY! i think it wont win for them but it puts confidence in the HD DVD camp and puts confedience that if the right tittles are released, HD DVD WILL sell.

Ofcoarse it will. People will buy w/e format has the movies they want. Despite all of Blu-rays technical advanatages and previous sales advantages, if our studios went to support HD DVD or even nuetral, HD DVD would win. All these sales numbers we have are nice, but if studios disregard them when making their choice (like Paramount did) then they dont matter. The format that wins in the end is the one that has all the studios on its side.

Normally it sucks to be wrong, but other times it feels oh so right. Amazing week for Blu-ray and horrible horrible strategy by Toshiba, Paramount and the DVD Forum. So many things went wrong.

Paramount going exclusive to the weaker format
Releasing their biggest blockbuster only 3 1/2 months after it opened in theatres and during a slow buying period.
Putting out faulty discs
Nixing lossless audio
Announcing sales numbers that we later found out to not be true
Throwing $150m at a corporation to take sales away from your competitor (hint, you already had paramount titles)

So I appoligize for this thread. I'm so glad it the week remained blu! So, continue celebrating and be sure to buy more Blu this week. The sophomore frame is still a tough one until Spidey arrives. Then it's over.

Naw man this thread was great. I'm sure it freaked out a bunch of us to buy a ton in the bogo giving us that extra % lol.

No we need a new one for this week!

I think you are wrong about Spiderman too. Good numbers will be there but will it be enough to end of the HD-DVD media? I don't think so.

An important thing go look at this week is the number of new HD-DVD users. I would like to know how many new players were sold and how it compares to previous weeks.

PS: I HOPE you are right about Spiderman.

I meant end of sweating about winning the week not the end of HD DVD (HD DVD ended on Nov 17th 2006 IMO). We own every week from the time Spiderman arrives to the end of the year. There were only 2 question marks, Transformers week (no longer a question) and the week after which is still a question mark but not as much as before.
