This move was pretty huge in scale. For once it wasn't just hype. And why do you say that it was being marketed as the next Star Wars? I don't see that as the case at all.

Yeah I've seen comparisons to Independence Day and some people compared the special effects to Jurassic Park... But I haven't heard anyone say it was this generation's Star Wars.

I am seriously close to pre-ordering the 3D version. Is it worth a blind buy? I am a Del Toro fan (Hellboy movies are two of my favorite comic/graphic novel adaptions). Also, I am a big sci-fi nut, so this has looked like it's right down my alley. Sure I could rent it from redbox first when it comes out, but I am thinking about just skipping the mididle man and just buying this sucker.

I thought about ID4 when they
[Show spoiler]dropped the Jager into the alien army (you even get a close up of a curious alien face just before detonation)
. Now that I think about it, it does have other similarities too: Humanity facing obliteration, alien invasion, nations joining together, hotshot pilot(s) being the only hope, military reduced to a resistance force, nearly invincible foe, massive alien weapons platforms, epic city destruction as a primary alien strategy, the
[Show spoiler]hero sacrifice angle, capturing and infiltrating alien technology, colonization by force by alien race, protagonist looses his best friend/brother, two "man" attack on alien mothership/rally point,
families torn apart, goofy-fun scientists, the ultra-serious leader, heroic speech before the final battle, and so on.

I like it better than ID4 thou.

I say go see it in a theater with D-Box seats if you have the option.

If you can try to watch it in the theater, it's an experience that shouldn't be missed. But yes, I'd highly recommend this as a blind buy. The rewatch factor is off the charts.

I'm gonna give you another perspective than the fellow members who posted above me. I agree it NEEDS to be watched in the theater. I watched it last night in IMAX but the ONLY thing great about this movie is the surround sound. It pushes you back in your chair about every 5 minutes. It is incredible. However since you mention you are a Del Toro fan - I thought for Del Toro this was very "flat". It uses alot of the same formula of Transformers (big metal sounds, great special effects and computer images) but unfortunately the SUPER cheesy characters with NO depth at all is escalated to a point of annoying. I was really expecting to enjoy this but "flat" is the only way to describe it. Image getting into a Ferrari with all the potential to have the ride of your life and the tires are flat. You can tell the car goes fast and looks hot, but it just doesn't go like its supposed to.

Man, nobody wants to watch movies anymore unless the characters are ultra-realisitc.

You're reading into this movie too much, man. It's about robots fighting monsters. Laurence of Arabia it ain't. I had a great time with it.

If you are referring to me. I love transformers AND battleship, but this movie just did not connect with me. Look at my collection, I like deep movies BUT I also like mind-numbing eye-candy action flicks too. I'm just describing my experience so that another member doesn't do a "blind-buy" with high expectations and also feel disappointed. It felt like Del Toro was trying to be Michael Bay but missed the mark. If you go into it expecting Del Toro or Michael Bay, I feel you will walk away wondering who directed this one. It doesn't fit with either of them.

Fair enough.
Maybe that's where our distinctions lie then. I don't care for the Transformers films or Michael Bay.

Yeah, some people just don't get it. It features exactly the type of characters it wanted to - it is based on Japanese-style robot/creature features. I think Del Toro did a commendable job, and I can't imagine it being any more entertaining.

This movie was more preachy than Transformers, but I enjoyed it. It seemed like there was a big speech, then fight, then a big speech, more fighting, etc.

Don't forget explosions above all else, dizzying cuts, and tons of military technobabble:

"Yankee Delta Potroast, code strike package Sierra Tango Dumbass. Roll in the C-130's and the A-10's on zero-one-six-niner-niner. Fire for effect. Deploy strike force Bravo Johnson Tutu to LZ Baker Alpha Beta. Make it rain, Alpha Beta. Initiate strike profile Papa Echo blah blah blah..."

It's worse than Geordi reversing the polarity on something to get the Enterprise out of its jam of the week.

Actually, I thought the Military stuff in Transformers worked better than in this.

It was a little weird to see Rinko Kikichi play such an innocent character after some of her other roles like her character in Norwegian Wood and the hit woman in Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (in which she never smiles, and has fairly explicit sex in what looks like a subway car but is really a love hotel). She at least stood out to me - I had a little trouble telling the bland white guys apart in this movie. I did enjoy watching it, but I didn't think it was particularly memorable aside from the special effects.

Just got around to seeing this last night. What a great Fu**ing time!! The sound was LOUD! The effects were pretty damn good and it was just a fun ride. Every time the machines fought, I felt my inner 10yr old swinging with them It's nice to have a movie like this come around. Not much thinking required but enough to keep you engaged. Worth watching it in theatres for sure. Day 1 for me
