'How I Met Your Dad' - HIMYM Spin-Off

The spin-off will feature a new group of New York friends and chronicle a female member of the group's quest to meet her future husband. The new characters may be introduced in the HIMYM series finale, and Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and Robin’s favorite hangout, MacLaren’s Pub, may be featured on the new show, serving as a link between the two gangs.

The premise, which is not tied to any of the original HIMYM characters, gives HIMYM creators and Up All Night creator Emily Spivey a clean slate to build new characters and relationships. The trio, who will co-write and executive produce the spinoff.

CBS certainly could use more HIMYM — the veteran comedy is the key piece holding together the network’s Monday lineup, which has had a rough fall. HIMYM launched its final season with a 3.7 adults 18-49 rating and remains CBS’ highest rated Monday series and the second highest rated overall behind The Big Bang Theory.

EXCLUSIVE: As fans are preparing to say goodbye to one of TV’s most popular comedies, How I Met Your Mother, CBS is looking to extend the franchise. I’ve learned that the network is in talks with HIMYM producer 20th Century Fox TV for a spinoff series, which takes a female spin on the original show. Referred to as How I Met Your Father, the spinoff hails from HIMYM creators/executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and Up All Night creator/exec producer Emily Spivey. It would feature a new group of New York friends and chronicle a female member of the group’s quest to meet her future husband. I hear the new characters could be introduced in the HIMYM series finale, and Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and Robin’s favorite hangout, MacLaren’s Pub, may be featured on the new show, serving as a link between the two gangs. Spivey, who is under an overall deal at 20th, is repped by UTA, which also reps Bays and Thomas.

They barley sustained the parent show for this long...This just feels like overkill. I would much rather have a show about Ted and the Mother, like 'How I Married Your Mother', or something along those lines. I think that would be a better bet. This seems like something that won't last past season one...

The problem with That 80s Show was that it had nothing in common with That 70s Show. That 70s Show used the 70s as a backdrop for a comedy about teens and their families living in Wisconsin in the 70s. That 80s Show just made jokes about the 80s rather than having it as a backdrop and was about a group of people in their 20s in San Diego. In essence fans of That 70s Show tuned in hoping to see something similar to That 70s Show and got something completely different, whereas people that didn't like That 70s Show probably didn't tune in because they thought it would be similar to That 70s Show, so the show alienated virtually everyone.

It would be funny if the show was based on the mother (i.e. how she met Ted)

I would much rather have a show about Ted and the Mother, like 'How I Married Your Mother'

I like this idea, but I think the issue is keeping the cast (i.e. just like this season with Marshal)

The problem is it's damaged goods from the get go...a far more number of people hated how HIMYM ended then liked it and many really do not want to put in the time for this new show if the writing team is just going to go all weird at the end again. Better off letting this die. Just go watch the mother in a new show on NBC.

The show features a completely different setting, time period, etc. None of the same characters, the bar, etc. All new. No reason they cannot try it out.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, passing on this was the right thing to do. They burned a lot of people with the finale of How I Met Your Mother, and that baggage would have carried over here. A lot of people felt really betrayed, and you can't blame CBS for being nervous, especially if the pilot wasn't working. There's a lot of factors, but this really was for the best. We'll see if it comes back next season, once things cool off, but I think it would be better to put a fork in this one. It's done.
