I think the idea is Criterion very well might do a whole new scan of this since the Arrow one looks like the previous MGM bluray. Neither of them are bad at all but with a new scan it could actually probably look quite a bit better. It seems like they probably would, cause if they don't, I really don't even see the point of releasing it when there's an existing special edition bluray in this country already.

If Criterion does a new scan, then there is certainly room for improvement.

Not with the way they encode.

I know many had hoped that the original 2.0 sound mix would have been included on the original BLU since some complain that the 5.1 revamp gets a bit to harsh with foley effects / score and vice versa. So for those who aren't able to import the Arrow release the the Criterion should be a nice +.

It would be nice to have he original opening logo intact like the Criterion Blow Out contained. But Either way can't stop what is coming.

Still up with this hey?
I've yet to encounter these supposed encode errors, some have some of that white noise creeping through (on my tv at least) but they've for the most part looked great on both tvs I watch them on.
I've seen these screenshots you keep trying to compare theirs with and while the Arrow versions have been a little better the difference is marginal at best and no one would ever notice while watching.
Difference between Thief was like Taxi Driver vs. Taxi Driver MI4k.
Either way some of you exaggerate way too much on this shit.

Difference between the 2 Taxi Driver releases is similar to the difference between the two Ghostbusters MI4K releases. They look virtually identical when A/B'ing a particular frame. With Thief, the grain looks noticeably more natural on the Arrow than the Criterion, and makes the Criterion look like it was very mildly filtered.

They probably do exercise some mild filtering with some of their transfers.
It's definitely what some of their screenshot comparisons have seemed like to me rather than it being an encode thing.
Either way the difference always seems about the same whenever I see people bringing up the screenshot comparisons and never looks like anything to get frustrated with or scoff at.
At this point its not going to be hard to top the current MGM master for Dressed to Kill if they're doing their own restoration.

Anyhow, I love DTK but I do wish Criterion would release stuff that hasn't had a decent Blu release before.

Brian De Palma ascended to the highest ranks of American suspense filmmaking with this virtuoso, explicit erotic thriller. At once tongue-in-cheek and scary as hell, Dressed to Kill revolves around the grisly murder of a woman in Manhattan, and what happens when her psychiatrist, her brainiac teenage son, and the prostitute who witnessed the crime try to piece together what happened while the killer remains at large. With its masterfully executed scenes of horror, voluptuous camera work, and passionate score, Dressed to Kill is a veritable symphony of terror, enhanced by vivid performances by Angie Dickinson, Michael Caine, and Nancy Allen.

I'm not sure I can triple-dip (on BD alone!) unless the differences between this and the Arrow disc are really noticeable. Which they may very well end up being. Still, I may have to try to finagle a $13 (or whatever the largest potential member coupon discount is) price tag during the fall B & N sale to justify buying this movie yet again.

So is everything that was on the MGM release going to be ported over to the Criterion? It appears that way from the list of extras, but they're not described exactly the same so not sure.

Yes, plus these two new ones (some of which are found on the Arrow disc I believe):
  • New interviews with actor Nancy Allen, producer George Litto, composer Pino Donaggio, shower-scene body double Victoria Lynn Johnson, and poster photographic art director Stephen Sayadian
  • New profile of cinematographer Ralf Bode, featuring filmmaker Michael Apted

Assumedly the Allen and Spoto interviews are not the ones commissioned for the Carlotta release (with 'new' in this case meaning new to the US)?

Edit: They were created for the Carlotta disc, and ported for the Arrow one.

Yeah, I'm wondering about that. I think they'll probably be the same ones.

I will probably not be double dipping, unless it's vastly superior.

The Nancy Allen interview is definitely new as she posted a couple pictures from it on her facebook page before Criterion announced the title.

Criterion will feature the MONO soundtrack uncompressed. so DePalma files may want to hold onto their MGMs for the 5.1 mix. hanging onto mine in case there are differences in video also. I don't see any issues coming but always good to be cautious.

I love that this is a Criterion but I don't think it's enough of an improvement over the other BD for me to double dip. I think I'll wait until Criterion starts releasing UHD BDs.

Are you simply referring to the extras here? Because I can't see how you could think a 4K remaster approved by the director isn't enough of an improvement over any past disc. Theoretically, it should be a significant upgrade in PQ.
