Interesting. Not to break the scope of this thread for too long I'll just say I liked Cotillard and Pike, but I feel like Cotillard has done much better and felt that Pike gave a strong performance, but one that I enjoyed almost in a campy way. Wild really stuck with me.

Just found out my local art/indie theater is getting Tom At the Farm this weekend. Can't wait to check it out, will be my first Dolan film! And wow, what amazing poster artwork. Gives Plain something to work off of!

Does the UK DVD have any special features? I might end up watching it on BFI Player, at least that retains the HD. I'd import the US release if it's an All Regions disk (and affordable). It's a shame although hardly surprising that the Region B releases don't have any English subtitles.

How many members have every edition Plain has released or been involved with (all first prints)?

I only know of two, Key714 and Bluprint. Anyone else?

Teddyjun is the only other member that has them all that I know of. He posts more over at HDN though.

ZD30... the whole 'torture works' propaganda nonsense and the torturing of the audience in that whole section was irritating, but the night vision section where they go to the compound I thought was very well done and I love PA's artwork for the releases, but I thought The Hurt Locker was a MUCH better film, not to mention my love for Bigelow's Near Dark, which needs a good Blu transfer someday.

I didn't think Foxcatcher was bad so much as annoying and the nose prosthetic was a gimmicky distraction. I see what they were going for with the movie's message though. No interest in re-watching it.

The Act of Killing was maybe a bit rough around the edges, but essential viewing for an insight into genocidal monsters, I just don't know how many more times I could sit through it.
The other night while watching the Hungarian film White God, I had a bit of trouble making it through the (simulated) dog fight sequence and other scenes of cruelty (some offscreen and just suggested by sound effects), but there were some great sequences that really made up for it, putting it in my top 15 of 2014. The scenes of hundreds of dogs running through the streets angry about their mistreatment is pretty impressive just from a filmmaking logistics standpoint. I wish Plain would give that film a release, but they usually celebrate outstanding performances by human actors not canines.

See all of Miyazaki's films AND then Takahata's (especially Fireflies, Only Yesterday and Kaguya). Kondo's Whisper of the Heart is also excellent. I never finished the Death Note anime (a friend showed me the first 10 fansubbed), I need to finish it someday, but the first half of the manga was excellent... until the focus goes to Light's newer younger nemeses (M & N) who were nowhere near as interesting as L and the whole thing starts to get creaky and disappointing as a result.

A LOT of anime tv series really do suck and I mostly gave up on that stuff years ago, aside from Studio Ghibli films. I did make a LIST here of some anime films, OAVs and series that I found worth watching back in my anime years when my friends bought lots of dvds and LDs that I could watch for free, but it's an expensive hobby to avoid especially if you already spend $ on Korean Blu-rays. Just rent the major stuff worth seeing and avoid the rest. I now wish I'd spent most of that time catching up on classic foreign films instead.

OLLA is not a film to watch when sleepy because it's definitely slow going -- the film is possibly more laconic and laid back than Robert Mitchum -- but I loved it and put it among my favorites of 2014 (I have similar feelings regarding Under the Skin). One of the best things about it is that it's lacking a lot of the typical tropes of the vampire genre: no sparkly teen romance nonsense, no flashy music video-ish battles against Lycans or hybrids, not a bunch of sequences about stalking humans for blood. It's more about the weariness that might develop from living for centuries and frustration with seeing how much mankind screws things up. It's also got a lot of eccentricities for sure (I love that she packs suitcases full of books to travel and his cobbled-together technology). Sadly, it's not the kind of thing to make Transformers $$$ despite being a thousand times more interesting. For a fun, goofy mockumentary take on vampires, What We Do in the Shadows was pretty enjoyable for a rental.

I recommend checking out some of Makoto Shinkai's work, if you're interested in seeing remarkable Japanese animation, also.
Makoto Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star was interesting and was on my mind while watching Interstellar with its similarities regarding the amount of time it takes to send messages across the stars. I need to see his other films.

I love Melancholia, but I can see people being worn out by it's pace. The first half involving the wedding reception has some similarities to Vinterberg's Dogme 95 film Festen (aka The Celebration). The second half is where it gets more interesting and visually flashy, when the world might be headed for an end and someone's personality makes them much more adaptable to that possibility than most. I have to agree with Ebert's take on von Trier's visual approach to the apocalypse being more interesting that all the generic destruction you see in end of the world blockbusters. One of my favorite films of that year.

I have The Master dvd rented from the library sitting nearby awaiting my eventual re-watch to see if I like it better the 2nd time around, but I have some newer films rented that I want to get around to first.

LOVED White God. Saw it in theaters near me a while back, and bought the blu ray day 1. Even though it was at Cannes in 2014, it didn't see a United States release until this year; so for all purposes I consider it a 2015 film. And currently it's in my top 5.

I also saw Tom at the Farm last night, and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. Even though it was made before Mommy, it also just got a US release. So I have it in my top 10 of 2015 list at the moment. I'm looking forward to seeing Mommy now, and fully support Plain releasing any and all Dolan films.

So Plain pretty much has to start releasing more than one a month if they intend to stick to their plan of having Two Days One Night, Om Shanti Om, Still Alice, Foxcatcher, Ernest & Celestine, Frank, and Oldboy all out in 2015

It's always hard to speak about favourite films of the year because many films come out different time in different countries. Most of the "oscar film" for example are alway released in january/february where I live. I still think Birdman and Foxcather etc are 2014 films. So personally I like to look at the original release date.

My favourite of the year btw is Andrew Haigh's 45 Year, which I just recently saw at a local festival. What a brilliant piece of cinema.

Ah, the unending conundrum of deciding upon release years for lists.
American critics go by US release because their readers have little opportunity to see it in its overseas release and neither do critics unless seen at a festival. The odd case is when a movie makes it on a critics list decades after its foreign release, usually due to a new restoration giving it a US debut or re-release (Melville's 1969 classic Army of Shadows hit critics top ten of year list for 2006 back and the previously barely seen 1978 American indie film Killer of Sheep made lists for 2007).

For foreign released movies like Snowpiercer, I place them on both lists and use asterisks before the title (usually with original release year underlined after director, sometimes using 'ff' after year if it had early festival release). *= released overseas in an earlier year, **= released in USA the following year. The number in exponential form after the ')' is how many times I've seen the film (useful for deciding what to re-watch to refine/decide ranking of films).

For my master list of films seen I go by year of original theatrical release in country of origin for foreign films. TITLE (DIRECTOR 201x; COUNTRY)

The big thing that gets me are film festivals. This year at Sundance, they showed "The Witch". It was picked up by A24, and will be released in March of 2016. So, unless you were able to go to 2015's Sundance and see that movie, you have NO chance of seeing it until 2016.

So would you consider that a 2015 or 2016 film? I'm gonna go ahead and list it as 2016 for my purposes.

When going back to make list for older years (like say favorite films of 1958 when there were such topics on IMDb years ago), this is where it gets annoyingly confusing, hence my combining of US/int'l release years in my favorites of years lists. I can tick off the asterisks and see immediately where a movie would be on my top ten for that year depending if I'm going by US or international release dates rules.

Though Wikipedia calls The Witch a 2015 film (and so does IMDb). But I'll check the theatrical release date, which will eventually say 2016, but list also the film festival premiere date.

So, for my master list I might list it as:
The Witch (Robert Eggers 2015ff/2016) *names of actors

with actors names in red italicized text and also maybe a one sentence description on lesser known titles whose plot I might forget (i.e. semi-obscure old film noir titles sometimes tend to blur together in my head if I don't write short descriptions on my 5,000+ films seen master list)

I'd most likely put it on my 'of the year' list for 2016.

I know The Witch is only a movie and it might even be a good one, but its amusing that many years after the infamous Salem Witch Trials were recognized as a sham largely influenced by vengeful conflicts between neighbors and vile, greedy attempts to annex other people's land (a witch can't own property), we still make movies that act as if there really were witches in New England. Salem-related films kinda irk me because its related to historical incidents where innocent people were actually killed there due to hysterical religious nonsense. Though I guess it could be worse and filmmakers could be making 'blood libel' films instead of Salem nonsense.
I say this despite being a big fan of Euro horror films like The Wicker Man (1973) and stuff like M.Reeves' Witchfinder General and the 1960s Hammer horror film The Devil Rides Out (*Christopher Lee). I recommend Benjamin Christensen's 1920s silent classic Häxan to any horror fan who hasn't seen it.

For me it is the original theatre release date, the festival premiere does not count. So it must be released somewhere in theatres for wider audience. It doesn't need to be the USA premiere. White God for example was released in Hungary in june 2014 after its Cannes premiere, therefore it is 2014 release.
While We're Young premiered in TIFF 2014 but the first wider release date was 27th of March 2015, so it is a 2015 release. That's how I see it.

Speaking of The Witch, Plain should nab that now! I know it wont be released till next year, but neither will alot of Plain's releases it would be great to get a full blown horror from them, and we all know It Follows was unfortunately picked up by someone else.
