Hi Herb,

As you say it may not be worth the additional 200 bucks. However a newer player from our BDhp20's will some what future proof to some degree. Who knows in a year Ver 2 could be a must. Who knows what the studios will be throwing at us. I'm not into that interactive stuff, netflix, pandora either. If it comes on a player so be it.

I'm selling my Harmon Kardon 120. I recently bought a new Onkyo. The money from that will pay for the new player.

The Oppo is out of my league. (TOOO much $)

Curious, what troubles did you have with the BD-hp20? Wondering because I've had mine for over a year. Never a problem playing BD's. New releases or what ever. Agree with you, their C/S is lame!

Does your HP 20U allow you to access the disc menus? If I press "Top Menu, or "pop up" menu, all I get is "cannot operate" or " operate after stopping play". This is for both DVD's and Blu-rays. All I can do is put in the disc and wait for the disc's menu to come up, then use the arrows to navigate.

My question is with all the different sound formats will this player be able to play them all through my Lexicon MC12?

Are the Blu-ray sound tracks a function of the Blu-ray player or the surround decoder?

Relative to all players (I almost bought the Pioneer Elite) until I discovered a new model is coming someday soon, (Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD), are they all able to play all the various sound formats?

I am somewhat confused about compatibility features of the Blu-ray disk, the players, and the surround processors.

Will someone explain this to me?

Thanks
You will have to connect the Sharp's audio via the Lexicon's 5.1 multi-inputs and let the Sharp decode. The Lexicon can't decode the new HD Codecs but it does have multi-ins for a SACD or, in this case, a BD player. Enjoy.

I want to retract my comment about Sharp's C/S being lame. I called once and got zero help what so ever. I called twice again and spoke to 2 of the most helpful people.

Btw, I've called Onkyo and I was treated like I was interrupting their breaks!

Hi Herb, I understand what your saying. While the movie is running I can't do anything with "top menu" It reads "can't operate" The "pop up" will operate while the movie is playing and I can move to whatever I want. Languages, special features, selections, BD Live etc.. I never tried it on a DVD only BD. WEIRD your's does not operate the same as they are the same player. Do you have HU8100900 firmware?

hi again,
I suspect that part of the problem with this player might be the disc itself. I think the movie people really have not yet gotten their act together with any uniform standards for production of the various discs. Most all of the BD discs are full of Java code in order to make all the BD Live interactive streaming stuff work. Since there are so many different movies and players, it probably always will cause some headaches.

I think that BD Live will turn out to be a passing fad. These BD discs SHOULD last for years! Five years from now, if you want to watch "Casino Royale", how are they possibly going to be able to keep all of the interactive content up to date for every movie?

When I finally got the latest FW update installed, I thought it would fix all these glitches, but it did not. I eventually will sell or give this player away and get a newer one. I am mostly a TV person, and no more often than I watch a movie, this HP20 will do until a newer model hits my hot button. The HP22 looks pretty good, and the price is right, but I'm not sure if I want another Sharp. I have asked a couple of times on this forum, and even tried to start a new thread, but the HP22 does not seem to be generating much interest.

Hi Herb, I own 39 BD's. Which is a very small amount compaired to others here. My point being, only 3-4 of my disks have the BD Live on them. Your possibly right there. BD live may be a passing fad. I bit the bullit and bought a Samsung 3600 today. Decent price. $325 CDN. + tax. It decodes the new codecs straight out of the box. Bitstreaming to my Onkyo. The sound is far superior with True Audio + Master Audio. The picture is IMO sharper, crisp. On my way home I ran into someone in need of a BD player. I must be sitting on a horse shoe today or what!! Meaning I can unload my Sharp HP 20u. I'll throw in my old optical cable!

From what I read on this forum, you have made a good choice. It seems that the Samsungs and the Sony players get more favorable comments than others, although, they ALL seem to have some glitch or other. Right now, the Sharp BD HP22 looks pretty good for the money. See the HP22 thread. There's a nice member over there who likes his. I'd like to keep our commentary going for awhile, until we figure out some answers anyway.
THANKS,
HERB

Hi, sure all the players have some degree of glitches. Just have to be one of the lucky ones who get a "glitch free" model I would have gone for the HP22 but it is over $400 + tax here in Canada. I would have liked to keep the Sharp Aquos TV and Bluray thing. Good luck in your search for a player.

Guys! I found a solution to the player freezing up and not playing BD discs!

Disconnect the power cord, pick up the BD player and throw it in the trash.

What a POS! I think I paid $350 for this garbage and haven’t used it more than 15 times. I will NEVER buy any Sharp product again. Period. Good old American manufacturing for you.
