Note to those who are upgrading or just curious (I was curious):

The BLUE screw I believe had some adhesive applied before they screwed it in. I definitely saw minute debris on the ridges of the screw. So before you unscrew it, TAP (not hit or pound) the screw with the screwdriver using something hard (another screwdriver or a wooden spatula) to "loosen" the screw. Press INWARD and TURN using a screwdriver with a large handle for that extra torque. It should not break.

BACK UP your PS3 before you upgrade the harddrive, and you don't have to worry about this.

Mine fully restored without anything missing, even save games and internet settings... No redownloading nothin - course you need an external drive fat32 formatted with USB to do this, but it is a SAVING GRACE than waiting for all that stuff to download again.

Everyone knows how to change out the HD. But what happens when you turn your PS3 back on??? No system software on the new HD. What are those steps????

you don not have to worry about that. the OS is stored in the firmware so when you turn the ps3 back on it will ask to reformat then when that is done the ps3 boots as normal. The OS is there, your psn network info is all there, the only thing that will be missing are your game saves, downloaded games (which you can download again) demos and movie clips! everything else will be the same as it was before you changed your hard drive

I upgraded from 40gb to 160gb WD scorpio. I love it! Highly rec you do this, it is so easy to do you can do this even if you have never touched a hard drive before. Just back up your data using the backup utility in the system info menu and you will be golden. I used a usb thumb drive for my back up. When the system has rebooted, go back to the system menu and select backup then restore, then all of your game saves demos etc will be right there where they were before.

as long as you perform a back up before you switch out your hardrive then yes. When you perform a back up all game saves get saved. once the drive has been replaced just restore the back up from the device you saved it on

Not quite true. You can download it as many times as you want to the *same* console. The limit of 5 is applicable to *different* consoles.

It's like the iTunes model where you can have 5 active machines/devices

I think its best just to back up all your info then re-load after changing HD's

That's what I did when I upgraded.

AFAIK the games that don't allow you to copy the game saves require you to use the backup/restore to preserve them - again AFAIK.

One feature I would like is the ability to backup game saves to the PSN servers and download them to another console using the same account etc..

Your not completely right, your PS3 or computer doesn't slowdown but you forget that the PS3 or any computer with 512 memory will and does take longer to open or load 100gb's of any file types. In effect the processor doesn't slowdown instead it bottlenecks. AS to hdd selection I have a wd 250gb scorpio it works perfectly, hdd controller sets limit on read speed 7200 rpm won't gain you anything. As for the partitioning for game and other os
I went with 10gb for other os and balance to game os. once you get other os installed you can create links to an external hdd I have a wd 500gb & a wd 1tb drive. I'm running
YDL 6.0 hope this helps someone.

An anonymous Sony official has "confirmed" to Japan's Nikkei that they will sell their advanced computer chip operations to Toshiba in an effort to re-focus on core business. The official announcement is expected later today. The sale gives Toshiba the manufacturing responsibility for the much hyped Cell processor used in Sony's PS3. Sony, of course, will continue to invest in the Cell chip. Nikkei says the deal is worth some ¥100 billion (about $858 million) and should be completed by March.
