If there were any TV shows encoded with 480 lines on Blu-ray, they'd be within the Blu-ray specs (as Blu-ray allows decoding of standard definition video), but they wouldn't be high definition. |

This process has continued to intrigue me, especially movies like Casablanca or 2001 that look absolutely stunning in HD, yet were obviously not filmed in a technology even close to it.
Does anyone know how more detail is brought out of movies that weren't filmed that way (I'm assuming it's a painstaking frame by frame process)? |

Exactly, many people do not seem to understand that a film intended for a huge cinema screen is by definition the highest possible definition and any digital transfer would create lines of definition which are always inferior to the film. But it does not matter unless people plan to have TV's as big as cinema screens which can't be.

at least according to the research done for the ITU sub group6 the reason is two fold, 1) every time film is "copied" there is loss, and you have the original negative, then the intra-positive, the answer print (negative used to make the copies) and release print (theatrical version of the movie). then you 2) the equipment set-up in the theatre. |

most films getting Digital Intermediates are scanned in at 2K. Sony does all theirs in 4K though and Warner Bros had The Dark Knight in 4K. Also if the projectors are out of focus then complain! Don't just sit there and expect it to fix itself when the projectionists are running around lacing the next projectors on their run time sheet.

4K is needed, I think, to get the best out of a 2K display. If the scan is at 2K, errors will be introduced when 2K scan is mapped on to a 2K display.
