thanks in advance
I didn't think there were any TV shows on Blu-ray encoded on Blu-ray with 480p resolution. I think there's bonus features on Blu-ray that are encoded in SD (480 line) resolution.

If there were any TV shows encoded with 480 lines on Blu-ray, they'd be within the Blu-ray specs (as Blu-ray allows decoding of standard definition video), but they wouldn't be high definition.

Default How are old movies upgraded to HD?

This process has continued to intrigue me, especially movies like Casablanca or 2001 that look absolutely stunning in HD, yet were obviously not filmed in a technology even close to it.

Does anyone know how more detail is brought out of movies that weren't filmed that way (I'm assuming it's a painstaking frame by frame process)?

Exactly, many people do not seem to understand that a film intended for a huge cinema screen is by definition the highest possible definition and any digital transfer would create lines of definition which are always inferior to the film. But it does not matter unless people plan to have TV's as big as cinema screens which can't be.

If anyone wants great info on bluray transfer process, watch the extras on Baraka. Baraka is, for many people, considered their "reference" disk for HighDef quality.
Also, Baraka was filmed in the early 90's on 65mm.

Some say Baraka suffers from Edge Enhancement, or possibly simulated effects of it during the downsampling process to get to 1080p......

I say it's reference..... This is one instance where I'm glad I can't see those flaws.

+1
I am considering baraka as reference quality as well. It shows the quality of the 65mm film and the due diligence given during the transfer process.

It's estimated to be about 2K.

I expect a 4K scan of the original would be needed to get theater-equivalent 2K resolution on to blu-ray.

35mm negative is above 4k, but theatrical presentation would depend on the theatre and set-up, but it can be below 1080p.
at least according to the research done for the ITU sub group6

the reason is two fold,
1) every time film is "copied" there is loss, and you have the original negative, then the intra-positive, the answer print (negative used to make the copies) and release print (theatrical version of the movie). then you
2) the equipment set-up in the theatre.

Around where I'm at, the two big multiplexes around here are so blurry that it's probably closer to 720p. Either the film prints aren't very detailed to begin with or those projectors are seriously out of focus. Yet another reason to stay at home and watch movies on my Pioneer

most films getting Digital Intermediates are scanned in at 2K. Sony does all theirs in 4K though and Warner Bros had The Dark Knight in 4K. Also if the projectors are out of focus then complain! Don't just sit there and expect it to fix itself when the projectionists are running around lacing the next projectors on their run time sheet.

To be honest though you shouldn't have to.

4K is needed, I think, to get the best out of a 2K display. If the scan is at 2K, errors will be introduced when 2K scan is mapped on to a 2K display.
