Does anybody really think that a higher bitrate encode would drastically improve the PQ of 300? I mean, it's intended to look 2D, grainy, and have overblown contrast. The source material does not lend itself to demo-quality picture.

Regardless of your opinion on the digital effects added to the film, there is no denying that the transfer itself is absolutely top-notch, insofar as it accurately recreates what the film looked like in theaters. I believe that its low bitrate did not hamper it at all, because it's a title that will never have the pop of other, polished HD releases. How much better can it really get for this particular movie?

I personally loved the movie, and thought it looked really good. The comic book like look was really cool too. People get too worked up over PQ, what makes a good movie? PQ? SQ? Lack of grain? No, its a good plot, good acting, good directing, and good action. But thats just my oppinion of course.

casablanca is coming too! and now we get the PiP with 300. I really could care less, but i thought some people might like to hear the news.
I JUST bought this movie.

Things like this might cause me to stop buying Blu-ray in favor of DVD. Either do it right the first time, or dont do it. (300, T3, Fifth Element, etc)

Idiots.

And no, I wont stop buying BD in favor of DVD. Dont be silly

I'll be all over Deadwood and Casablanca, assuming that that linked article was talking about Blu-ray when it mentioned Deadwood. I don't know if you have the complete series on DVD over there (we certainly have here).

I'm almost positive he mentions it during the director's commentary of one of the extended LotR sets. Sorry I can't be more specific, but it's been a while.

I don't own this title already so I'll be picking it up. If I did however already own it, I more than likely wouldn't double dip on this feature.

Funny how some some critics here after seeing that Bluray grain fest gave it a 5 for PQ. I brought 300 a while back and it's not one of the movies i use to show off Bluray.

I personally don't think 300 is worth a double dip.The original release was good enough for me.

Obviously, if you liked it then that's great, plenty of other people did too, but let's not bend the facts.
IT was considered the first "blockbuster" of the year since it made $400m+ worldwide. It was one of the highest grossing films of the year. The DVD/HDDVD/Blu-Ray release was and may still be one of the biggest sellers to date for the format(s). Warner may not have planned for that type of success, but after how well it did in the theaters, they did spare much on the video release. I should have said my previous statement better. It turned into one of Warner's gems of 07.

I've watched this title several times and i think that the grain makes this movie look outstanding. I hear people complain about the film makers adding grain after filming, this film was written and produced by Frank Miller (Sin City) so what exactly were you expecting? If i have friends around , this IS the movie i like to show off my system with. Grain is good when used well and in this movie its used VERY well. Some films you want to look grain free, for example Ratatouille, Cars and some films NEED the grain, 300, Band Of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and the Black & white opening scene in Casino Royale come to mind. What you guys gonna do when Death Proof and Planet Terror hit Blu-Ray complain because the picture is scratchy and Queer looking. Whats the point of being a movie fan only to whinge about a film makers artistic style, after all l thouight thats why you watched the movie in the first place. I REALLY love this movie and will be happy to upgrade , so long as they DONT remove the grain.

Personally, I'm more excited about the release of Casablanca. 300 was okay, but I just didn't enjoy it enough to purchase, but that's my opinion.

Casablance is a classic, and will be for many years, hence my desire to purchase.

Oh, I agree. I was simply trying to avoid bringing the grain debate back up again. My point was that the current encode does the source material justice, so why do we need a higher bitrate, you know?
