I don't think much of it one way or the other. Those Amazon numbers are constantly in flux.

I can already see it now with this title. It will be just like Superman Returns: the BD's VC-1 video will be bit for bit identical to the HD DVD version, but HD DVD zealots will claim that somehow, for some miraculous reason, it looks much better on HD DVD. That, and you can bet they will claim the TrueHD track blows the BD's PCM track out of the water even though that is technically impossible (as in the TrueHD track being superior to PCM and not literally that the BD is floating on a body of water and is able to be blown out of it ).

HEY, why the hell do you guys care what other people that you dont even know do? it's their life its them that should give a shit what they think. i'm gonna buy the departed on hd dvd and not blu-ray for the simple reason that i want to and that i feel like it. every blu-ray supporter should stop *****ing like little kids and just watch themselves.
mmm, maybe a pill is needed here ?

The BDA was formed before HD-DVD even existed and declined to even be reviewed by the DVD Forum for a reason, they wanted change and it wasnt just sony, it was 95% of the studios and CE companys in the industry. So on that alone, i want HD-DVD to go away for all the trouble it caused. I also love Universal movies, and you can bet your ass i will be owning The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Miami Vice, Chronicles Of Riddick and a slew of others the day they come out in blue cases. But i refuse to spend 500 dollars on hardware to buy pictures from Universal Studios. I am hardly the only one feeling this way, and the majority of BD fans feel the same way.
Well stated.

Default Newbie to blubie and here to stay!

hi everyone , this is my first post , thanks for reading !!!

I've had my sony 55" HDTV for just under a year now, and Its seems
like ive been waiting for a PS3 with BD drive for ever... but now that I
have it , oh how sweet it is!! hehe. I like to " dabble " in high end gear,
and im not anything close to a expert on the technical side of Blu ray coding,
but i knew that it would be and (become) a higher standard for (HD)DVD's of the future. i never looked twice at HD-DVD , i knew it would be something short lived and rushed out to the mass market.. now dont get me wrong you HD-DVD fan boys.. im sure that there is aleast "ONE" movie you wouldnt mind maybe kinda watching again.. haha.. but now that i see the movies that are coming out compared to HD-DVD .. i knew my choice would pay off.
sure the format war goes on... but a year from now BD will be doing things
the other guys cant even dream of..
apart form the coding and things that will blow HD-DVD's a$$e$ apart , in the world of data you can never have enough room. that "ALONE" makes it a no brainer.

live long and Prosper , Blu ray

Default Blu-Ray outselling HD-DVD in standalone hardware as well

I saw this in one thread when someone claimed that in stand-alone players HD-DVD was outselling Blu-ray... not sure if it was this one... but anyway... Forget the PS3, the numbers are in and Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD in standalone players as well

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/ques...1107/index.php (page 16)

So... Blu-Ray outsells HD-DVD in software, stand alone hardware, other hardware, has more movies and support - why is HD-DVD still here?

HD-DVD The Departed #19 on Amazon

Looks like they're embracing combos and or starved of other quality movies to buy.

Somebody actually said combos were great, as the user could watch the movie in his high defintion player or a normal DVD player.

I just don't get it. Oh well, more combos for them due to their support of that senseless business practice. +1 bluray.

Microsoft. To a lesser extent: "Universal exclusivity."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the HD-DVD/DVD combo were HD-DVD purchases. BUT...I could use the argument against any HD-DVD fanatic that you can't tell if the number is indicative of HD or Standard Def sales. Maybe people with standard def DVD. We know for sure that every Blu-ray purchase was made for HD.

Give it to 'em. I can't see people not into HD buying combos for any reason.

We keep seeing surveys that people think they are already watching HD on their HDTV, when they aren't. So, how bright are these people? Bright enough NOT to purchase an HD DVD for their HDTV?

I don't understand all the fuss about this. The Departed is one of the best movies of the last 10 years not just this year. Combine that with the lack of releases from HD DVD studios and of course it's going to sell. If I had an HD DVD player only I would buy it. The trend is still overwhelmingly in favor of BD.

Let's see how well The Good Shepperd and Children of Men do when released. Both were critically accliamed but dissapointments at the box office. Someone here and I can't remeber who said new releases "are the lifeblood of the format". I couldn't agree more and this means Universal is in serious trouble. Children of Men has only grossed $33 million YTD with a budget of $76 million! The Good Sheperd has not passed $60 million with a budget of $85 million. No wonder there's a shakeup at Universal. With revenue deficits like these I don't see how they can hold out on BD much longer let alone until Xmas season.

Both The Good Shepherd and Children of Men should do very well for HD DVD. The lack of box office is probably a big positive since it means the titles will be completely fresh for many. And they are so desperate they've pushed an HD sampler disc and a calibration disc into the top 10 on Amazon (how sad is that?!).

But, really, compared to a Casiono Royale or a Pursuit of Happyness, the Universal stuff is going to be a complete joke when looking at absolute sales from all sources.

March 13 and then March 20 are going to be absolutely mind numbingly disasterous Videoscan numbers for HD DVD.

Gary

EDIT: I'm left wondering how well a title like The Good Shepherd would do on Blu-ray. And how long Universal can look at the BD numbers and brush them off.

A calibration disc I can see, but I also find the sampler disc sad. For the most part the studios and OEMs probably see through the smokescreen, BD is doing super well.

Cool number spike

Just a Thought...

Im just taking a wild wild guess on the numbers thing, but i myself could be a perfect example of whats going on.. i "waited" for Blu ray even though i had the chance to get into HD-DVD.. from the technical stand point, there's not much apeal to me about HD-DVD, and i think alot of People out there are doing the same thing.. they want Blu ray!!!!
