I dumped the Russian BD disc to my hard drive and KODI playback. It does have some low bandwidth banding in the opening scene and a couple of other places, but overall it's a heck of a lot sharper than the DVD (definitely a real 1080 transfer, not upscaling by any means) and looked great on a 92" screen. It had the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack (could have been better with a true remaster; could have been a lot worse, considering). Still, I enjoyed seeing it on a large screen again, which I hadn't seen since college back in the early '90s on a 35mm film version that had gotten dust/scratches galore from playing it once a year for over a decade.

Given the quality of the transfer by HDNet movies (brief logo gave away that's where it was from), there is no excuse for the ancient DVD version being the only one available officially, IMO. I really don't think Roger gives a crap what his fans want, only what he feels like doing. I still want to see the original Wall concert footage with Gilmore and Mason in it. The only full concert I have of The Wall was that Live in Berlin version (on laserdisc no less) and some of the cover bands were god-awful sounding. But at least you got to see what was done in the concert (same style, just not Pink Floyd).

Can you confirm it's a "real" pressed disc? Or is it a BD-R?

I'll answer my own question, cuz I just received the disc four days ahead of its scheduled delivery. I can confirm what others have already reported on previous pages of this thread: the Spanish Blu-ray is a "real" pressed disc; not a BD-R.

UPDATE: Skipping through the nine chapter-stops, they're in very random middle-of-song places, which makes it feel more like a homemade product. <shrug> At any rate, it looks decent enough; certainly not remastered -- a lot of dirt and print damage, but seems to be lacking the HORRENDOUS edge enhancement of the DVD. Haven't gotten it up on my 92-inch projector screen yet, to run it through its paces.

The Wall also aired on the long gone INHD channels that Comcast used to carry. INHD was run by InDemand and ran HD content. This was during the early days of HDTV. The 1080i version on INHD was fairly decent but with stereo sound. No idea how it compares to the versions HBO and HDNet Movies has used.

If anyone is interested, Nick Mason had an interview published a couple of days ago and he talks about various albums in surround sound, but not The Wall. He also talks about Roger and David fighting. https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...cerful-secrets

Mettler: If you don't mind me asking, Animals has already been done in surround, and some kind of release idea was drawn up with bonus materials, right?

Mason: Yes—well, I don't know where we've really gotten to with that one. There's been a disagreement between Roger [Waters, original Pink Floyd bassist/vocalist] and David [Gilmour, Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist] on some aspect of it, yeah. And, to be honest, I'm just waiting to see when the dust settles.

Mettler: Right, right. But you, obviously, would like to see Animals come out in surround, because that was the first album Pink Floyd recorded in your own Britannia Road Studios [in London, from April-December 1976], and it's an album that had a bit of the punk influence on it as well.

Mason: Yeah. It was fun and interesting to record in our own studios, but we didn't quite have the tech-level of an Abbey Road. The equipment was ok—we had an MCI machine [recording console], and we had a good engineer, Brian Humphries, working with us. But it just probably lacked the sort of polish that perhaps Abbey Road would have brought to it.

Mettler: Well, hopefully, a 5.1 mix of Animals will be able to get through the pipeline, so we can truly get the full "Pigs on the Wing" experience in surround.

Mason: Yes, I'd like that. It could be something.

Mettler: I agree.

Well, it's not The Wall, but maybe it will be next?

Well, there is some good news for The Wall, James Guthrie was interviewed a few days ago and revealed that he is ALMOST finished with the 5.1 mix of the original album.

He said that Covid and other Floyd projects (Animals will have a new stereo and 5.1 mix, see my prior post where it was to be released last year) have delayed it. He was 25 when he mixed the original album and was 65 when he started the new 5.1 mix.

Listen at the above link: He speaks about the 5.1 mix of The Wall at about 32:20

Many thanks for the heads-up regarding the Spanish Blu-ray, just ordered it (though it said it wouldn't become available before October 22nd?).

Regarding the 5.1 DD sound I think to remember that the "AC-3" of my old LaserDisc would be better (lossless), but the hazzle of putting up my old equipment and try a synchronously, parallel run of LD and Blu-ray is probably a little over my head.

Okay, so, the Spanish Blu-ray is the best one so far. With that said, where can I get one?

Thanks for the link. I'm assuming the audio is English and the Spanish subs can be disabled?

I am only addressing the sound part of the film (anything dealing with the Roger Waters era of PF is bound to be in some kind of perpetual dispute i.e. the dust settles when the dust settles) but James Guthrie in the link in my post above talks about how bad the music tapes were, how he fixed them and completed the mixing of the new re-mixes of the Album and Movie in both stereo/5.1. He didn't say it but he probably did an Atmos mix as well (His Dark Side Atmos mix has been released).

I don't know what makes you think that. The Russian one is actual 1080i, not just an upscaled DVD. Steelbreeze has the Spanish one and says it's nowhere near the resolution of the still capture I posted (which is actually much better looking; the board software scaled it down in terms of compression. It looks much better for real, save a couple of scenes with a bit of macroblocking (probably due to compression on HDNet).

You guys have mentioned some HD broadcasts of the film that were recorded? Does anyone have any links to those videos (if it is allowed to share such links here)? I only have the DVD so I would like to check out what those look like.

Pretty sure it's the same transfer as the DVD.

[Show spoiler]

Is this tied up in music licensing issues or something?
