That connection looked solid as well. Do you think there's anything I may have done to the drive itself that would cause this? It doesn't seem so, because i would expect that if that it was the problem, the thing would still beep when i touched it. This may sound stupid but i haven't put in the top screws yet (because all previous times, the thing would have to come apart again 5 min later). I guess it's possible that the tightened screws may provide that extra millimeter of distance closure to complete the metal-to-metal contact (this was never a problem before, however). I'll try that and then it's off to work. If you have any more ideas let me know....will check back later. thanks so much again for the rapid response.

av8tr10178 I would check that the connections from your BD-drive are connected tight and also this happened to me. Make sure you check the red box and yellow box that Marine Mike highlighted in his pictures since more than likely one is not in all the way and like I said it happened to me and just made sure the ribbon cable was all the way in and that fixed my problem.

MarineMike - yes the blue light does indicate that there is a disc inside. And I'm happy to report that after several hours of play, it seems the laser swap was the solution (with respect to reading discs)... so thanks to you for the install tutorial. anyways, kaliraver, i'm going to disassemble and make sure all connections are tight and hopefully it's the same problem you had. will report back with results. thank you both for the help.

I had a similar issue when I ordered my replacement as I didn't read carefully from the seller and they specifically stated it didn't read Blu-Ray and only DVD and CD. Apparently there is a failure rate on the lasers and some of them do not read Blu-rays. EDIT: Keep in mind that when I said the failure rate, I was referring to the same reason why you replaced the laser to begin with, not new ones. So if the guy sold you a used laser with the Blu-ray diode burnt out, then yeah, you are stuck where you started. Please post back with where you got it. Eject button issue has been fixed! Here's how i got there....I didn't realize it at first, but a disc can be ejected via a menu. Just highlight the game icon, press and hold triangle on the controller, and then select "eject". This worked... even though the physical eject button on the machine still did not. This helped me confirm, however, that it was not that i had put the drive back together incorrectly after the laser swap. Anyways, once i figured that out, i was resigned to the fact that this was how i was going to have to eject a disc from now on. Since I still had some screws out, i took the console back to the kitchen table to finish the job..... then i found my real problem! the little metal, springy thing (underneath the plastic top case) that makes contact when you push the touch sensitive button was bent backwards. it's so tiny that i hadn't noticed it. the good thing is, since the power button operates with the same mechanism, i had something to compare it to, and that's how i finally noticed the problem. So, in the end, i was about to seal my PS3 up forever, and just before i did, i ultimately found the problem. sweet. anyways.... thanks for the help marinemike. you are a scholar and a gentleman. hope this thread helps someone out similarly. quick plug for the excellent laser i bought off ebay: ebay@yallstore.com excellent communication, ridiculously fast shipping (3 days from NY to HI), and guaranteed working product. highly recommended!

So no seller is perfect, neither is any laser. Whats funny, is this is a 40GB playstation, and it was purchased brand new, no void sticker was touched or aynthing. ripped void sticker off to open it up, and it had a KES-400 deck. not the 410. Whats going on here?? |

Awesome guide mike
![]() Things got a little hairy for me cause I undid a cable that didn't need to be touched. I had thought I put it back in all the way but turned out it was loose. Anyway after tracking down that mistake I made, I'm the proud owner of a once again fully functional 60 gig PS3. Having saved $70 in the process. Thanks Mike! |

Hello, I have ran into a problem while replacing my kes-400a for the first time.
I ordered a Kes-400a from Ebay (same seller that was mentioned in the previous posts), and I noticed it was slightly different from the laser that was inside my PS3. The snap-lock piece was not there. Here is a picture: ![]() Sorry for the blurriness of the photo, but you'll notice how the new laser on the right does not have the white lock on the bottom. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to remove that piece from my old laser or not, I don't want to risk breaking it by trying to force it off. Is it supposed to be removable? Or did my seller send me a broken laser? I looked at pictures of other kes-400a lasers from different sellers and they all also don't have the white and black snap lock for the ribbon cable. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and the tutorial on the first post doesn't mention anything about detaching the snap-lock from the old laser and putting it onto the new one. Thanks for all your help! OOFMATIC |

That really sucks then.. I spent $70 for nothing.
Is there any way I could possibly transfer the clip from the old one to the new one? Or is my only option finding a laser with a white clip? ![]() |
