"Blu-ray Disc players released after Oct. 31 will feature markedly improved functionality over models currently available for sale.

The Blu-ray Disc Assn. has mandated that all hardware streeting after that date must be able to play back picture-in-picture video, as driven by BD Java interactive technology. Many players on shelves now can handle BD Java, but to varying degrees. Few Blu-ray players include picture-in-picture capability, for instance, not even the PlayStation 3.

Sony’s current and summer 2007 stand-alone models and available Pioneer and Philips units are among those lacking the picture-in-picture feature.

... snip ...

“I just finished graphics with my first BD Java title,” said DVD producer Van Ling, who declined to name the release. “What I’m finding is that there is a lot of optimism that it will work, but it’s not a certainty. We are now out of the realm of normal video format stuff, and we’re into computer programming.”

Ling worries about ongoing differences among Blu-ray players, because it’s likely some manufacturers will adhere to minimum standards and others will go above and beyond for competitive reasons.

“The whole problem comes in when some manufacturers toe the minimum line and some others might make twice the minimum [functionality] on players,” said Ling. “In my view, I shouldn’t have to know what every single player can do. Rather than downgrade my creative vision for the lowest common denominator player, I want to create something [that fully realizes Blu-ray abilities].”

I'm not interested in spreading misinformation, just getting to the bottom of this. I have a vested interest, after all, as I have a first-generation BD player. To be absolutely blunt, by the sounds of this, it's not me that's spreading the FUD, whatever that term may mean! (Why do people on forums insist on talking in code?)
BD cannot be measure by its picture and picture as you have said....I DID choose BD because of its Superiority over HD-DVD which is an inferior format to my eyes.Even when we get the support of PIP ,i'm asking you this question are you going to use it.tell me a survey or public performance are using this PIP .it is useless.EVEN HD-DVD themselves dont care about what they care about is watching PQ and SQ.After i finished writing and comment to our friend here ,i heard the good news

BLOOD DIAMOND on BD-50 and PCM this is what i want GREAT GORGEOUS

Blood Diamond' Announced for HD DVD, Blu-ray
April 20, 2007

After missing the opportunity for a day-and-date high definition release with DVD last month, Warner Home Video has announced 'Blood Diamond' will be available on Blu-ray Disc June 5 and on HD DVD July 3, roughly a full month later. The reason for the delay between releases was not specified by Warner; however, given the disparate disc specs between the two versions, the answer is obvious.

Both versions will include the suite of extra features found on the standard DVD, and both versions will include lossless audio: Dolby TrueHD on the HD DVD and PCM 5.1 on the 50-GB Blu-ray Disc. While the Blu-ray specs end here, the HD DVD will also include an In-Movie Experience (IME) track, a Focus Points feature offering a new way to access supplemental material, and the first-ever true web connectivity that will allow viewers to access online polls, maps and more through an ethernet connection from their player. Whether this functionality will work across a variety of players including Xbox 360 remains to be seen.

While Blu-ray owners will have first crack at 'Blood Diamond' in June, the richer experience goes to HD DVD owners a month later. Aside from supplemental material, both versions should look and sound stellar with a rare Warner double-dip into the welcome world of lossless audio.

Bet we are still stuck with the lower bit rate video encoding though....

Certainly in some instances, I will view the IME features. You'll never hear of me filling in an online poll via a BD, HD-DVD or DVD, but I'm sure there are some people who will like that feature - just as there are thousands upon thousands of people who phone vote on TV shows, something I'd never consider bothering with.

The bottom line is that the more choice there is, the more punters can pick and choose which features they like from a BD disc. There's enough capacity on these HD discs that it's no great sacrifice to include features that will please some (but not all) of the consumership.

I'm a dual format owner so I'll always pick the version that has the picture, sound & extras.

I just thought it would be interesting to ask people regardless which format you own do you think a company should give you a disc with no extras & charge you the same amount they are charging another format with extras? Or would you rather them wait & release it later so you can have the same extras.

This isn't a Blu-ray vs HD DVD question. It's according to if they're doing giving you less on the format you have & charging you the same amount. Do you think that's right or again would you rather them hold it off until you get the same extras if you're going to have to pay the same price?

It could happen the same way around the next time. I was just wondering how people felt about this.

I don't need extras, so the only way I get screwed over is if they charge me more.

And that is exactly my point...its not about Blu-ray vs HD DVD, your question is about what to charge for extras.

HD DVD only example:

DVD Features:

Audio: Dolby Digital Surround 5.1 - English, French, Spanish
Subtitles - English, French, Spanish - Optional
Addititonal Release Material:

Distributor: Warner Home Video

Rumor Has it HD DVD- $34.99
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...37&catid=24112

DVD Features:

Number of Discs: 1-Disc
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen
Audio:
5.1 Dolby Surround - English
5.1 Dolby Surround - French
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish
Additional Release Material:
Interactive Features:
Scene Access
Interactive Menus

Distributor: Warner Bros. Entertainment Canada Inc.

So there you go...2 titles on HD DVD from the same distributor, same price....one has features, one does not. Sounds like the HD DVD owners are getting "ripped off" just as often as we are...the difference is we don't drink the cool aid.

So like I said before, only the distributors can establish what the dollar value of extras are...and the above is clearly showing you that the dollar value of extras is ZERO.

The value of the product lies in the movie - where it should.

I don't understand your analogy here. The Departed had Dolby TrueHD on HD DVD & uncompressed PCM on Blu-ray so it was a wash. Same bitrate on video.

"Rumor Has It" didn't have any extras.

So what is your point here? What I was asking do you think it's okay for Warner to release "Blood Diamond" on Blu-ray with no extras & just the movie for the same price they are releasing it on HD DVD with all the extras including PIP commantaries & the extras?

To be honest I'm going to rent this title instead of buy it but I just wondered if people thought it was okay to release a title with all the extras for the same price on a different format for just the movie or wait until it can be even for both formats.

Re-read my post...

To answer your questions - yes, because extras and PiP have no dollar value.

This will be my 7th year in a row going to the F1 Grand Prix of Canada in Montreal and 4th year being in row A. We're in Grandstand 21, the slow hairpin before they head along the waterfront.

It's one of my favourite weekends of the year.

Damn Lewis Hamilton came into F1 just at the right time eh? It's still taking some getting used to not seeing Schumi race, but the 3 races so far have been excellent and it's great to finally see F1 being broadcast in widescreen HD.

You guys get HD feeds of F1 in Canada! That's awesome! I wish I got it here in the US. Hell, until last July I lived about 30 mins from Indianapolis and we didn't even get the 500 in HD. CBS airs a few of the F1 races, like Monaco. Hopefully they'll give us the HD of it.
