I don't think there can be such a movie, not everybody is going to agree on any one movie as it might just not appeal to them.

There are NO "must haves" for everyone. Everybody's taste will be different.
The "must haves" for me (and many here) will be movies that blow you away with PQ and/or AQ, and be the type of film they enjoy. Therefore, even if "50 First Dates" had the best PQ of any blu, most will not enjoy the movie enough (nor will it have that "wow" factor when showing off BD to your friends). That said, I generally view these categories as being those that I find best shows off blu: 1) Sci-Fi (or other special effects spectaculars) -Matrix (worse PQ/AQ of the series, but the best movie of the series) -Pirates of the Carabean (I personally love these flicks (especially the first one) and they are Disney releases (best studio for PQ/AQ)) -Kill Bill-Very Violent, and definately not for everyone, but a fun ride and a PQ/AQ feast. -Others have liked Dark Knight, Iron Man and Transformers. Everyone raves about the PQ/AQ, but I just can't seem to get myself to care about these flicks (I'll likely get Dark Knight eventually) 2) Animation -All Pixar movies are a must. AMAZING PQ/AQ. And just plain wonderful movies. Wall-e, Cars, Ratatouille (And Finding Nemo which has been pushed back). Unless you hate these types of movies, you really should have at least one (and once you get on, you will get the others) -A lot of folks rave about Kung Fu Panda. I hated it. Just a really bad, boring, predictable movie. PQ/AQ were good, but it didn't blow me away (probably because I hated the movie so much). Again, this is why you should make your own choices about what YOU must own instead of buying what others recomend. -Sleeping Beauty-haven't seen it, but it's Disney, so PQ/AQ will be top tier. If you own kids, it's a must. But, as an adult without kids, the classic Disney animation just doesn't appeal to me. 3) Documentaries -Seeing the beauty of the planey, or the seas, or space, can be amazing in Imax. It can be even better on blu. -Planet Earth: Most would agree that this is THE nature documentary to own. Stunning photography from around the planet of things you will never see. I agree with the BBC version (1080p, and longer then the Discovery Channel version-but you get a British accent and METRIC measurements) -Galapagoes-Not as much variety as Planet Earth, but superior PQ/AQ. A great follow up to Planet Earth 4) Misc. -Baraka-THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! IT IS NOT A DOCUMENTARY! IT IS AN ART FILM!!! THE PACE IS SLOW, THE IMAGES ARE SOMETIMES BEAUTIFUL AND SOMETIMES HORRIBLE. THERE IS NO NARATION. IT IS AN EXPLORATION OF THE IMPACT OF MAN ON OUR PLANET. IT IS NOT LIKE PLANET EARTH!!! Sorry for the caps, but I am fed up with people comparing it to planet earth, and then people getting mad since it wasn't what they were expecting. But it has stuning vidoe and arguably the best PQ of any release on blu. I love this movie. -Band of Brothers. For a TV series, it is stunning. Also increadibly sad, and a true eye opener about what our troups faced in WWII. Great PQ/AQ, great story, great acting. Worth a look if you have any interest... |

I feel like I may be beating a dead horse here by contributing to this already extensive thread (and that pains me as an animal lover), but what the hay...here's my list. (And I agree with those who say lists will vary depending upon individual tastes). I'm new to blu so my library is still modest (around 30 movies or so now, but I do have a much larger HD DVD library that overlaps with blu so I'll include those as well).
classic film: The Godfather collection These are great movies and the extras are quite interesting as well...I especially enjoyed the one that described the restoration process. animated film: Wall E or Beowulf Great animation and audio and a nice set of extras. Best extra of the bunch was the deleted scenes section...they not only showed the scene but explained why it was cut. It also gave insight into the movies development and how it changed over time. (It was originally going to be a dark move about enslaved robots). Beowulf is the more adult film but has a great plot, action and superb video quality. sci fi: Tough call here...several good choices, so I'll list two. 2001 & Planet of the Apes collection. (This is one of my favorite categories, so it was hard to pick just one. ![]() documentary: I'll go with Planet Earth, The Universe Season One or March of the Penguins foreign film: Pan's Labryinth or The Orphanage best film you may have never heard of: Lucky # Slevin Great plot with a couple of good twists and a dry sense of humor. action film: The Dark Knight fantasy: Stardust This movie has it all...a touch of romance (appeals to the wife), action, suspense, great acting, great video quality and great audio. It's also a good candidate for best film you may have never heard of. ![]() comedy: no picks here...I'm very picky about comedies and 90% of them just don't appeal to me...I can't stand those that get their jokes from crude humor. I want one with smart wit and the occasional situational gag. Anybody have any suggestions here? romance: no picks here either as it's not my taste in films (much to the consternation of my wife ![]() drama: Into the Wild Great video quality, interesting (and true) story, fine acting and the extras give great insight into the how and why the film was made. musical: Black Snake Moan This movie isn't a musical in the classic sense, but music plays an important part of the story and the film is filled with great blues music. If you mean for demo purposes, below are some of the ones I consider essential...
Sunshine - to demo a movie with a lot of dark scenes and a great score (just have to include it since it's my favorite blu-ray). ![]() Cars - fun animated flick to demo how good animated flicks look and sound. The shiny cars look impressive. 2001 / Blade Runner / Patton - to show that older movies can look great on blu-ray as well. Casino Royale / Iron Man / TDK / Transformers - for demo'ing how good current movies can look and sound (most people have seen one of these so they'll have some basis for comparison). Planet Earth - for demo'ing documentary-style blu-rays or Baraka if you want something more along the lines of art rather than a documentary. Celine Dion / Dave Matthews / Shakira - for demo'ing blu-ray concerts |

That's easy:
1.) Blade Runner. Why? The answer is simple. First, it's the best movie ever made and it's a perfect blu ray from a technical standpoint. There are a lot of new releases that are put to shame by the quality of this 1982 picture. 2.) Kung Fu Panda. Pretty good movie, perfect PQ & SQ. It doesn't get any better than that. 3.) Speed Racer. Fun Movie. Perfect PQ. Sadly they messed up the sound by making it regular DD. There are a bunch more you should own: Simpsons Movie, Bond Movies, Godfather Trilogy. Since I haven't listed any gory movies here's one that's also perfectly executed technically: "Doomsday" |
