Jay-Z doing the score is another reason for me not to ever see this. I don't pay money to have to listen to hip hop or rap.

You assume the "score" will be rap? Intresting reading comprehension.

If you had botherd to read the article you would see this is a colaboration with Jay-z and The Bullitts, the latter having a strong cinematic theme to his music.

But I guess it is just easier to dismiss everything other than think about it...

Well then don't. Get over it and the rest of us that do enjoy that music will pay for it.

Oh great. Is he directing an orchestra? Prolly not.

This film looks bleh to me. Who cares about Bob Gatsby anyways? Leo loves these drawn-out, over-produced character epics. The problem is that the characters arent very interesting and Leos fake accents/subpar acting seem cheap.

Hope it all works out....

Jay-Z is one of the few mainstream rappers I have respect for. I am a fan of hip-hop music, but it's been in decline for a long time. There's too many rappers who rap with shallow lyrics and little understanding of their own genre.

Jay-Z isn't one of them. Certainly isn't one of my favorites, but he can actually rap - he's not one of those guys who repeats the same line over and over again. He's actually pretty well educated, and you can see that reflected in his lyrics which are often influenced by philosophy and pop culture.

I am against the idea that music in a film has to be reflective of it's time period. I am a big fan of Tarantino because, even in his period films, he doesn't choose music because it sounds like it's from the setting and place... he chooses music that looks good and reflects the tone he's looking for. In Tarantino's Kill Bill, he asked the rapper RZA to compose original music for the film. It wasn't rap. It was a musical score. There was one rap, but that was only used in the soundtrack CD.

I'm pretty sure Jay-Z isn't making an all rap score...
It wouldn't be very easy to watch a dialogue scene with someone rapping in the background. Jay-Z is someone who understands music production, and although I can bet that there will be a few rap songs, the score will primarily sound like... a score.

Maybe not John Williams... but something that fits Luhrman's vision for this project.

Everything I've seen so far has impressed me. Perfect casting IMHO(Myrtle's a bit skinny, but that's not too important). And I'm just glad to see an adaptation that doesn't play it safe by copying what every other Gatsby film has done.

Everyone's expecting rap music(which is like expecting The Master's score to have a synth guitar solo), but that just show's that no one read the source. Jay-Z is collaborating with The Bullitts. Their music sounds nothing like American rap music. Jeymes Samuel has been influenced a lot by music, and if you go through all of his music you can find samples from obscure places and a lot of influence from musical scores. I mean his band is called The Bullitts and he actually is a filmmaker himself.
If Gatsby's musical score is anything like this song, or any of his other work(they actually has a lot of range) I can't wait to hear it.

Wow...just when I thought it couldn't get worse.
What is Jay-z going to collaborate on? He was no musical skill what so ever; he has producers make the music he raps over. He is not a musician in any shape, way or form; the only thing I can imagine him contributing would be rap.

Plus they pushed the release back 6 months ( thats always a good sign ). Scorsese would have been perfect for this...I wish he was doing it.

This is going to be a steaming pile of dog shit.
Baz Luhrmann (directing anything) + 3D + Jay-z "score" + early 20th c. Literary masterpiece = f$@king disaster.

Oh please. There are bigger problems in the world of cinema. The least you could do is see it for yourself before dishing out harsh judgements...you know, like a rational human being.

You can't judge a book by its cover, but you can get a pretty good idea of what's on the inside. Given what is known about the production of this move, I think it is rational to expect this to be less than stellar.

Besides this is a thread about an unreleased film...really not much we can give but our expectations.

What if the book cover doesn't have any pretty pictures?

It's fascinating you chose a saying that is probably the most universally used in teaching people not to judge based off appearances and turned it into: Yeah you can't judge...but you probably can.

So then maybe it's best we view films with zero expectations so then we are not influenced by our own biases and pre-conceived notions? Just a thought.

Near impossible to do though. Unless one somehow has no life and yet income to watch movies, no one can watch everything that comes out.

So we have to get some expectation of movies we think will be worth our time to screen out what to watch with our precious free time.

I only see movies I think I'm going to like, and avoid ones I don't think I'll like based on trailers, bad reviews etc. I try to be open minded about the ones I do decide to watch, but there's no way to be expectation free since I have to have some expectation of liking a movie to spend time/money to see it.

Back on topic, I'll definitely see this as I love the book, like Leo etc. But I am fairly skeptical given the 3D, Jay Z score etc.
