Cool The Great Gatsby

With F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story “The Mysterious Case of Benjamin Button” collecting a trio of Oscars this year, picking up the writer’s best-known work “The Great Gatsby” sounds like a great decision for director Baz Luhrmann. The wildly experimental filmmaker behind “Moulin Rouge!” and “Romeo + Juliet” loves period pieces, so his choice to take on the novel makes plenty of sense. But who will he snag to play the film’s large-shoed roles of Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby.

“I know where you’re going,” the director responded to MTV News on the red carpet of this year’s Academy Awards. The Australian-born director chuckled when asked if he would be bringing back any of his previous collaborators for “Gatsby,” and DiCaprio still has that youthful look and the acting chops that could slide right into the role of Nick. For now, though, he’s just concentrating on his broader vision for the movie.

“It will be a drama,” Luhrmann explained, nixing the idea of turning “Gatsby” into a musical a la “Moulin Rouge!”

Elaborating on his plans, he outlined his take on he book, which centers around making the story relevant to the world’s current financial crisis. Set in the 1920’s when when American high society reveled in decadence, Luhrmann’s case is easy to follow.

“It’s a great story,” he said. “A great iconic story and if you think about it, it truly reveals the time we’re in. It might explain a bit of what we’ve been through. If you reread it now you’ll see how powerful and meaningful it is in this time.”

Who do you want Luhrmann to cast as Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby”? Do you think Leonardo DiCaprio would be a good pick? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Oh, say it isn't so! Not another remake! I prefer the 1974 Robert Redford version of The Great Gatsby only.

My opinion of course.

I'm not even going to call this a "remake." It's a new adaptation of an important novel. I doubt anyone involved feels they're remaking the Redford/Farrow film.

More casting news:

Quote:
Carey Mulligan is about to live the high life on the big screen.

The British beauty has been tapped as leading lady Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film remake of “The Great Gatsby,” according to Deadline.

“I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting,” Luhrmann told Deadline. “However, specific to this particular production of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan.’”

Mulligan will play opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, who has long been rumored to play Jay Gatsby in the film, although no official confirmation by the studio has been announced.

Tobey Maguire has also reportedly been in talks to join the cast as the story’s narrator (and Daisy’s second cousin) Nick Carraway, as has Ben Affleck in the role of Tom Buchanan.

Among the leading ladies Mulligan reportedly beat out for the part were Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Amanda Seyfried.

The 25-year-old Mulligan received her first Oscar nomination last year for her role in “An Education.” She recently starred alongside rumored off-screen beau Shia LaBeouf in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” and in the likely Oscar contending fall film “Never Let Me Go.”

She is currently shooting the action thriller “Drive,” co-starring Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston.

A rep for Columbia Tri-Star Pictures, the studio behind “The Great Gatsby,” was not immediately available for comment on Mulligan’s reported casting when contacted by Access Hollywood.

Great news! I'm a huge fan of Mulligan. IMO, she's the most talented actress under the age of 30. So perfect in An Education, Never Let Me Go, and even the otherwise flawed Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

...No, he loves period costumes. For obvious reasons.

(And at this point, I'd even take the dreary Robert Redford/Mia Farrow version from the 70's, as it's at least sane and hetero.)

(I'm actually ancient enough to remember when that was studio marketed as the future Big Blockbuster of 1974, just on the basis of the star-cast, the soft-focus cinematography, and fashion trends going all gushy over white jackets, flapper-caps and Rolls-Royces with whitewalls--
And then...all those people who went in to see the costumes got their first taste of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Not exactly the feel-good hit of 1974.)

We've already had a "modern Gatsby" (nobody remembers the hiphop "G", huh?)--

But as for doing a period one, given "The Age of Innocence", Marty just could at that. No lame joke.

What an ass.

But just so you know: Baz Luhrmann has a wife, production designer Catherine Martin, and they have two children together.

Can you enjoy his films now?

I'm with you. This is my all time favorite novel and I would like to see it done right. While I have enjoyed some of Baz Luhrmann's films in the past, he has never shown any capability of handling sophisticated drama of any kind. And the whole 3D thing is ridiculous.

Moved to Summer 2013

Source: RoS

Quote:
One of the films considered by most to be a potential Best Picture contender this coming awards season was Baz Luhrmann's 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. Originally set to do battle over the Christmas holiday serving as counter-programming to Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, the film also looked to have solid box-office prospects. Well, maybe those prospects are still intact, but the release date isn't.

Via a press release, Warner Bros. announced they are moving the film from Christmas Day 2012 to an unspecified Summer 2013 release.

Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, was quoted in the release saying, "Based on what we've seen, Baz Luhrmann's incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible."

Of course, they are going to say anything at this point to make sure the move doesn't reflect badly on the film. That said, a move from the holiday season to Summer actually isn't a bad sign, it is a sign that it might not have done as well at the Oscars as they may have originally thought and it may be more of a crowd-pleaser instead. No problem there.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of WB's International Distribution, added, "The responses we've had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think The Great Gatsby will be the perfect summer movie around the world."

So, there you have it, Christmas Day now only has two films listed with Tarantino's Django and Anne Fletcher's The Guilt Trip starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen.

Great Gatsby is the second WB film moved out of 2012 as of late, after Gangster Squad was moved from September 7 to January 11 as a result of the Aurora shooting during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises as a theater shooting in the film was going to be reshot out of respect to the victims and their families.

Wow! Was looking forward to this. The 3D looked awesome. I guess I'll just have to wait another year to see it.

That's not surprising, given that it was originally intended for after Christmas week--
Y'see, if you want to open a family film on Christmas Day, it's because you're trying to hit the largest parent audience during school vacation week.
HOWEVER, if you open an adult-themed film after Christmas Day and before New Year's, it's because you're a studio literally trying to "bury" the movie in the one "invisible" week that most critics are on vacation, and you're hoping to get at least one weekend in to recoup your losses before word of mouth spreads.

...Think we know by now which category Warner is putting this movie into.
And given the rule of shuffled pushback movies, I'm guessing "Summer '13" means, oh, August? (What, no February?)
