Default Flippers! GRRRRR!

I have been waiting for Dune to be shipping on BR for a long time. I have been a huge fan of this movie since the 80s. Finally, it is going to be released, but it is going to be shipping on a freaking flipper. I am at odds of that; if you drive a race car then drive a race car, if you're going to drive a VW, then drive a bug. Don't mix the two. I am concerned about quality of the movie. Just don't feel good about flippers and that's a bad thing.

You guys can bang me all you want, but you'll not change my mind about flippers. First, let us look at what is going to happen on a flipper. The blu ray will be digitized on one side. Now, I am going to assume the disc is going to get hot when burning the data on one side, especially blu ray. Then secondly, the DVD version will be burned on the other side of the disc. It just seems to be a lot of stress on the disc to keep a high quality product together. Remember when "laser disc" was a hit back in the 80's? I remember sending 79 movies to the disc company for replacements because the process to glue the platters together had separated after a few playbacks because the laser got the disc too hot causing the disc platters to separate because of the cheap glue that was used to seal the platters together. I know this is not how the flipper disc are made, but I fear the quality of blu ray will degraded when placing DVD and blu ray formats on opposite sides of the disc.

Like I said, you guys can beat the crap out of me on this forum about flippers, but I had to speak my piece. I honestly hope that flippers will be a big flop forcing the studios to reconsider shipping blu rays movies without being shipped on flippers. If the studios deem it necessary to ship both DVD and blu ray formats, then let them do it with separate disc. Now, go ahead and throw all the electronic darts you want... I have put my two cents in!

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release four titles from its catalog (two of them new to high-definition disc) on Blu-ray on April 27: Dune, The Jackal, Out of Africa and Traffic. With the exception of Dune, they will be released in the now-familiar "flipper" DVD/BD two-sided combo disc.

You're right... sowwy!

But still, I think flippers are a bad idea... on any movie that is released on blu ray... just my thoughts...

I completely agree that they are a bad idea.

Great that it won't apply to Dune at least

I have Dune on HD DVD and it looks really good. Way better than standard dvd. I assume it'll be the same transfer as the other ports have been.

I have the French version and it's probably 4/5. Perfectly adequate.

Hopefully this will be even better.

Dune only makes sense if you watch it while taking LSD or dropping acid (and even then just barely)...

I got Dune on regular DVD format, the 2hr/17min version. Looks pretty good upscaled from my blu ray player. But I know blu ray will blow it out of the water. I hope the blu ray will have the 2hr/17min version too.

It's not a Flipper.... so let's not make this into an Anti-Flipper thread...... I think we've got about a dozen of them already.....

There's a difference?????

For me, it made sense either way...... I guess I'm "High-Functioning" in that regard.

Will this have the three versions of Dune or just the Theatrical and Extended?

I'm weird because I actually like the long version with all the drawings in the beginning.

Dune is one of my favorite movies.

The only drawback I have with the extended version is the naration, I wish they would have kept Princess Irulan as the narator

I currently own the French BD (which looks gorgeous!) and the extended edition DVD (came in a steelbook; I had to keep it!), so I might pass on this US BD (unless it has great extras the other two discs I have don't, or if the PQ is any better).

Between the two though, I prefer the theatrical cut. The extended edition had some interesting new scenes, but I hated the prologue, a lot of scenes used recycled footage from other parts so it lost its coherency, some of the special effects were unfinished, and above all it cut out some scenes (all the bloody scenes specifically, eliminating some of the edge the film had to begin with). It's nice to see once, but I think the changed narrative and re-edited/recycled/unfinished footage ruined it for me.

I totally agree; I think the extended edition's narration ruined the movie, since he described the book so much in the prologue rather than telling the story. Hearing the Princess' voice is much more immersive.

I haven't seen anyone confirm one way or the other. Has anyone asked Universal?

BTW, I'm thanking GOD that this won't be a flipper.

I'm sure it will just be the theatrical cut only. The French BD is like that, and I didn't see any mention of the other cuts on the US release's spec list that was posted on this site.

And it will NOT be a flipper, according to this news.

I don't think it's going to be the extended cut either. It took years after the release of the DVD to see the extended being release. Universal will have us double dip later on

I've attached the link of the Dune HD-DVD screenshots for anyone who hasn't checked out what it looks like in HD.

http://www.hdmovies.co.nz/hddvd.php?id=Dune

I've got some faith in the Blu-ray transfer. However, I hope that it's not going to turn out like Army of Darkness, which is a step down from the HD-DVD release in VQ.

I other words- I hope the Blu-ray of Dune sports better video than the HD-DVD release, or at least the same, which is perfectly awesome and fine.
