Hi, i wolud say:
Set the receiver on LPCM MULTICHANNEL via one of the HDMI inputs, and the PS3 the same way PCM.

Default PS3 Bootup Question

I was thinking about getting the PS3 as my primary BR player but my wife doesn't like how when we currently use our 360 to play a DVD you have to go through a few menus before it starts to play. If I put a BR into the PS3 will it start to play the movie without having to navigate through any menus? Thanks for your help.

Yes, but if you want to use Component video cables instead, you have to buy the Sony PS3 component cable or a third-party version of that.

For standard composite (yellow for video, red and white for audio) the PS3 comes with that basic cable.

That is just like DVD:

Entirely disc dependent.

Some DVDs have FBI warnings at the start, some have them at the end of the disc. Some are skippable, some are not. Same goes for Blu-ray.

Also with Blu-ray, some discs have BD-Java which has to load (that is what makes standalone Blu-ray players so slow) before the disc's menu or film begins.

Warner Bros. Blu-ray discs usually have that BD-Java loading time, but no main menu.

The advantage to PS3 is the faster load time for that, but again the issue is disc dependent, not player dependent with regards to menus and warning screens.

As for the PS3 on-screen interface, it is divided into sections:

Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Game, Internet, Playstation Network.

The only navigational issue depends on what you were doing with the PS3 before placing the disc into it. The default when turning the system on is Game, but you simply press the left arrow on the remote to get to Video, then scroll up to the disc after it is loaded, unless you don't have any video files on it to scroll past when in the video section.

Yes. It's an option called "Autoplay." If you have it turned off, you'll have to put in the disc and then select it from a menu to play it, but if it's turned on a disc will start playing as soon as you put it in. I think it's on by default.

Default Home Theater in a Box

Hi All

I am totally new in this and please pardon me for anything that may sound stupid.

I have been pondering to get a PS3 as a BD player for a couple of months now. I stumbled upon this forum and learnt a fair bit here...thanks very much.

Currently, I have a humble 32" HDTV but my surroud system is a little ancient, it's a Yamaha HTib YHT-165 with 3 surround speakers, 2 front speakers, 1 centre speaker and a subwoofer.

I am connecting my dvd player to my tv with an HDMI cable and an optical cable to the av receiver.

If I replace the dvd player with a PS3, will I still have surround sound by maintaining the HTib YHT-165?

Thanks

Parpy

^ The PS3 has an optical out so yeah, you can hook it up to your Yamaha HTiB. You're not gonna get lossless audio though (just plain old DTS and DD). The only way to get lossless audio is by using HDMI.

While true, you can't get lossless audio on audio systems that does not accept multichannel PCM over HDMI, like his HTiB. Your advice about optical is correct.

Technically yes. Most BDs have full bit-rate Dolby Digital (648kbps) and DTS (1.5Mbps) than DVDs.

You're right, I should have pointed that out as well.

S$799? I found the 80GB just today for S$650 in KL (US$441). S$607 for the 60GB (US$412). Of course, no tax and officially Sony Malaysia has not yet released PS3s here.

The advantage of owning a HK/TW/SG PS3 is that it's both PAL and NTSC for DVD playback for Region 3 or All region DVDs. But if your collection is made up of only or mostly Region 1 DVDs, then I guess a US PS3 is what you'd want. Amazon don't ship outside of the US though.

Hi Guys

Is there anyone owning the latest PS3 80Gb that was launched in Malaysia? I just want to know if it plays Region 1, Region 3 and Region Free DVD's. I am more interested at it as a movie player instead as a gaming console.

Thanks

The PS3s released for South East Asia - Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore - are Region A for BD and Region 3 for DVDS. It plays PAL and NTSC videos, and if the BDs and DVDs are region free, plays that too.

Get the HDMI cables from Carrefour. They are less than RM30 each.

Unfortunately, if you own an Asian market PS3, there is really no way you could watch region 1 dvds with it. That is why I have a friend to bring back a US version for me back in 2007.

A not so useful alternative to your problem would be getting a stand-alone dvd player from Hong Kong. Yes, you must get it from Hong Kong, where almost 99.99% of the dvd players sold here at region free! You can actually get one for as cheap as USD 40 here in Hong Kong.

He's in Malaysia. All DVD players are region free.

I'm having some issues playing special features on my PS3. And when I try and watch Madagascar 2, after the previews, the PS3 freezes. I have switched PS3 and got a brand new one off the shelf. The new one does the same thing. Any suggestions?

1.Do you have the most recent firmware update?

2. It could be the disc, have you tried it in any other players?

I just figured it out. I have an infocus 7210 projector. The native resolution is 720p, but it will except 1080p and 1080p / 24hz. So I set the PS3 to output at 720p, the native resolution. I went into the settings and changed the output from 720p, to 1080p. And now it works fine. The picture quality looks the same in both modes to me. Im sure the projector is excepting the 1080p signal and then downscaling it to the native resolution.

I do find it weird that when I initially set the PS3 up and had it scan for the optimal resolution, it set it at 720p, even though the projector excepted 1080p.

I tried the 1080p / 24hz, but the picture looks horrible. Even though the projector excepts it. I just turned that off.
